Hello my Brothers and Sisters,
“WE SEEK TO IMPROVE AND ELEVATE THE CHARACTER OF MAN”
Office of the
Sovereign Grand Master Independent Order of Odd Fellows
SGM’s Installation Address
Good evening. Thank you for attending the installation of the officers of The Sovereign Grand Lodge and the
International Association of the Rebekah Assemblies. Also, a special thanks to the installing staff this evening.
My Brothers and Sisters from the District of Columbia I will be forever grateful to you for having the confidence
in me to support my candidacy for Sovereign Grand Warden, Deputy Sovereign Grand Master, and now Sovereign
Grand Master. Your support means a great deal to me. Without you I would not be holding this office. I owe a
special thank you to PSGM Harry V. Lohman and PGM – PGS Peter Geolot from the District of Columbia for all your
work in organizing this installation, reception, and my upcoming testimonial.
I also thank my Brothers and Sisters from the Middle Atlantic States Conclave and those from my associate
jurisdictions of Connecticut and Delaware for your participation in tonight’s festivities.
I am pleased that so many of my brothers and sisters from overseas are in attendance this evening. I welcome you
and thank you for being here. I look forward to working with you during my term as Sovereign Grand Master. I
especially thank Grand Sire Harald and Sister Vivi for your friendship and love. And, although for health reasons they
could not be with us this evening, I want to acknowledge and thank Sister Arny Gudjohnsen and her husband, Brother
Stefan from the jurisdiction of Iceland for their friendship, support, and encouragement. The gold leaf candle stand
which will be used in tonight’s services was a gift from Sister Arny and Brother Stefan.
I also thank the newly installed officers of The Sovereign Grand Lodge for your friendship, dedication and
commitment to the Order. I looked forward to working with each of you over the next year to help sustain and grow
our Order.
It is an honor and a humbling experience to stand before you tonight as your Sovereign Grand Master. When I
joined the Order more than 37 years ago I never envisioned that one day I would hold this exalted office. In fact, those
of you who know me well know that more than once in the past I have stated that I would never seek this office.
However, times changed and I felt compelled to do all within my power to help the Order sustain itself and grow. I
did not seek the office to be given the title “Honorable”, but rather, to do honorable work.
In today’s high paced world, we face many challenges to sustain and grow our Order. However, with every
challenge there are opportunities if we are open to new ideas, to respect other opinions, and are willing to do things
differently. Through our 5-year plan and through the work of the revitalization committee, we have begun a process to
bring the Order into the 21st Century. There will be those who will oppose the changes which have been or will be
proposed. However, the efforts to modernize the Order must not fail if we expect our Order to continue for the long-
term. Those efforts will not fail if each of us commits to work to build a better world through friendship, love, and
truth. If we are ready and willing to change and accept new ideas, we can sustain and grow our Order.
The traditions of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows teach us to promote friendship, love, and truth; faith, hope
and charity; and, universal justice. However, as T. S. Eliot has written, “tradition cannot be inherited, if you want it,
you must obtain it by great labor.” Tonight I commit myself and the Sovereign Grand Lodge to labor in the great
traditions and works of our Order so we can continue to move forward.

Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Cherish Yesterday, Live Today, Dream Tomorrow!
Office of the President
International Association of
Rebekah Assemblies
I.O.O.F.
Installation Address
Master and Mistress of Ceremonies:
Sovereign Grand Master Charles (Chuck) Renninger,
General Commander, Jerald T. Sarnes, General Military
Council, Lady Linda Fogelsonger, President, International
Association Ladies Auxiliaries Patriarchs Militant, all
other distinguished guests, Brothers, Sisters and friends,
A new page in my book of Odd Fellowship is about to
begin. As I accept the office of President I do so with
great humility and am mindful of the many great
responsibilities that come with it. I am truly grateful for
the confidence that you have placed in me and pledge to
serve this Order to the best of my ability.
When I joined this Order 44 years ago, never in my
wildest dreams did I ever imagine this evening. I sat in
awe as the leaders of our jurisdiction would visit our
Lodge. Then I looked with great admiration at our
International leaders as I began attending IARA, never
ever thinking that some day I would stand at this very
podium where so many great leaders have stood before.
To the installation staff, my sincere appreciation to
each of you for accepting your position and for
contributing to making this ceremony so memorable for
everyone.
To our special guests from overseas, thank you for
being here in Cincinnati. We look forward to meeting
and greeting you each year as part of our fraternal family,
and hope when you return to your homeland, you take
with you special memories of your visit with us.
To Sovereign Grand Master Charles L. (Chuck)
Renninger, General Jerald T. Sarnes, General
Commanding, Lady Linda E. Fogelsonger, President,
International Association of Ladies Auxiliaries Patriarchs
Militant, I pledge to you my support as we travel our
fraternal road this coming year. I look forward to
working with you as we “Make a Difference and
Celebrate what’s right with our Order”.
My Motto this year is “Cherish Yesterday, Live
Today and Dream Tomorrow”. I love this statement –
it has so much meaning not only in our everyday lives,
but also for our Order. We must Cherish yesterday for
this is our history and what a wonderful history besets the
Independent Order of Odd Fellows – we originated and
grew out of a need to help others, this is the foundation
we have built on, BUT we cannot live on yesterdays – we
must Live today - for what we do today not only becomes
another page of our history but also either enhances or
detracts from our image to the world.. We must not just
live in our Lodges but we must live and work as an
organization in our communities and throughout the
world, communicating to those around us who we are,
what we have to offer and what they can gain by being
one of us. Dream Tomorrow is our future – we can sit
back and let the future pass us by or we can get down to
work and secure our future in this changing world, the
page is ours to write.
Communication which is my Theme is the keynote
to our success or failure…
I have chosen the Hummingbird as my fun emblem.
It is one of nature’s smallest birds but it is a very busy
little bird. For it is only through action and determination
for survival like the Hummingbird can we as an Order
survive and grow.
Of course one of my other symbols is Musical Notes.
It takes all types and sizes of notes to write a score… Our
Order is like a sheet of music, made up of many types and
sizes of notes – so my challenge to each of you is —
“Let’s write OUR song – use every note available and let
us put OUR song on the top of the Charts.
My Scripture is Matthew 7:12: “The Golden Rule”:
Do Unto Others as You would Have Them Do To You”.
As we go forth from these sessions and back to our
Jurisdictions and our Lodges, may we take these words to

Acceptance Speech
It is with great pride and honor that I stand before
you as your President along with it is a great
responsibility. With the guidance of the leaders General
Commanding General Jerald Sarnes, International
Association Rebekah Assembly President Elect Sister
Laura Argue, and Sovereign Grand Master Elect Brother
Charles Renninger and myself; we will do our best. We
cannot do this alone, with the rest of the leaders of the
Jurisdictions along with all the members we can and will
strive to reach our goals. Membership is always the
number one goal. Everyone is important and with the
encouragement of us all, our order can and will grow.
We need to show our strengths and accomplishments.
Remember our youth as they are our future. It is our
duty and job to guide them along the way. What a great
opportunity for us to be their mentors. It is a joy to see
them grow and rise to be the leaders of this wonderful
order that means so much to us.
Thank you to the Installing staff for a beautiful job…
Well done!!! It is a good send off on our journey,
knowing we have all this wonderful support. I thank
Michigan for all your support, and to the members for
electing me as your president. I also thank the
International Past Presidents who have been here to help
me this far on my journey and will be there as I take the
final steps of this great journey.
My aim this year is to open the lines of
COMMUNICATION in our Order. I know that we all
have that as our top priority. We are all working towards

Chevaliers, Ladies, Brothers and Sisters:
ACCEPTANCE SPEECH — AUGUST 21, 2012
CINCINNATI, OHIO
I would like to thank General Jack Reasoner, Installing
Officer; General Clement Olson as the floor director; General
Fiorin for his wonderful staff and an excellent job of his guard
detail; General Wulff for his overall direction as the Officer in
Charge; and to General Ralph Carmen as the Chaplain
General. Also big thanks to Lady Mary Lou Faries, Installing
Officer and her corps of officers.
I want to wish our current leaders the best for the rest of
their sessions and I want to wish for Brother Charles
Renninger, Sovereign Grand Master elect, Sister Laura Argue,
President of the International Rebekah Assembly elect and to
Lady Linda Fogelsonger, President of the International Ladies
Patriarchs Militant the best for this coming year. Also I want
to wish for my elected and my appointed officers and to Lady
Linda’s elected and appointed officers the very best for this
coming year.
When I joined the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs in 1973, I
never imagined that I would someday be the General
Commanding of the World of the Patriarch’s Militant. This is
an honor for me and to the Department of Illinois.
On November 19, 1863, our sixteenth President of the
United States delivered (in part) this very important speech at
Gettysburg. “Four Score and Seven Years ago our fathers
brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in
liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created
equal. ….”
Thomas Wildey, the founder of Odd Fellowship in North
America, was a man of immense humor and warmth. On April
26, 1819, Wildey and the four men who responded to the
advertisement to form the Independent Order of Odd
Fellowship of North America in the city of Baltimore,
Maryland. If you all remember your history, just imagine
Thomas Wildey dedicated his life to the proposition that all
men are created equal.

heart in our actions and deeds.
As Chuck, Jerald, Linda and I start our year as your
leaders, we look to each of you for your involvement and
input. Four people cannot do this alone; it takes each and
every one of us working together in unison, to make our
Order grow. As I have said this past two years in my talk
to the Assemblies – the only difference between the words
UNITED and UNTIED is the placing of one letter, that
letter being I, the challenge is—which word will you use?
I extend to my Appointed Officers my sincere thanks
for accepting your offices: you are my “Angels” and I
look forward to our year together.
Thank You Sister Betty Jean Haighway, a singing
angel, for your rendition of “Do Unto Others”, I have
always loved this song and it has always had a special spot
in my heart as it brings forth such a wonderful message.
“I know that life has a purpose, I know that life is a
school,
I know the best way to face it, is found in the Golden
Rule.
Do Unto Others as you’d have them do to you.
Be fair to your neighbor, from his point of view.
Life will be full, if to others you will do
As you’d have others, do unto you.”
Would the Jurisdiction of Saskatchewan please stand.
To the Jurisdiction of Saskatchewan — my HOME
jurisdiction THANK YOU for all your support,
encouragement and love. I accept this position of
President for all the members of Saskatchewan and in
memory of Sisters Ruby Gleiser, Eva Thurston and Glenys
Ray, Past Presidents – IARA from Saskatchewan.
I know many of you made the long journey just to be
here for this installation, taking time away from work –
toting and carrying, with your vehicles and suitcases full
of items for this evening. You are truly an amazing group.
I am not sure how I will repay you for all you have done
and are doing for me. You are truly wonderful!
Please stay standing, would the members of Alberta
and Manitoba please stand.
To you, my other adopted “home” jurisdictions -
Alberta and Manitoba - you too have offered
encouragement and support and are part of the prairie
family … Thank You for taking part in the presentation
this evening, to each and every one… I love you all.
To my husband Jim, without you by my side, this
journey would not be possible. You have encouraged me
in all my many endeavours – you are one in a million and I
am so glad you are mine.
To everyone attending this evening, thank you for
coming and sharing your time with us. God Bless You all.
Fraternally,
Laura Argue, President
(Continued from page 4)
In our program for the year, President Laura, Gen. Jerald, Lady Linda and I urge each of you to make a difference;
to cherish yesterday, live today, and dream tomorrow; to bridge the gap; and to communicate. We urge each of you to
celebrate what’s right with the Order. We urge each of you to become involved in your community. We urge each of
you to build harmony among the units of the Order. We urge each of you to revere the past, but build for the future.
We urge each of you to remember that it’s not you and me, it’s we; it’s not us and them, it’s we. Working together we
can and will make a difference.
Bishop Desmond Tutu once said, “do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together
that overwhelm the world.” Starting tonight let’s each of us go out into our communities and do our little bits of good
and overwhelm the world in the name of Odd Fellowship.
Thank you for your attendance this evening. With God’s help and your continued support, together we will make a
difference. Good evening.
Yours in F. L. T.,
Charles L. Renninger

the same goal, keeping our order alive.
My program for this year is: [given in whole at
installation – see elsewhere in the News.]
In closing, I pledge my support to Brother Charles,
Sister Laura, & General Jerald. Together we will succeed.
Thank you to everyone here tonight for sharing this
evening with us. May God bless each and every one. I
look forward to serving as Your PRESIDENT.
Chivalrously,
Lady Linda

Sovereign Grand Secretary needs to list the address, the
telephone numbers of the Grand Secretaries and Secretaries of
the Rebekah Assembly and a least twice a year list the
Department Adjutants and Secretaries of the Ladies Auxiliary
Patriarch’s Militant with the address and telephone numbers.
Don’t make the paper an advertisement of ads.

fourth star is very important to me for these individuals that I
name and helped me throughout my membership in Odd
Fellowship.
Dedication: I would like to dedicate this year to my wife
Judy of 50 years and all those brothers and sisters that have
supported me throughout the years in Odd Fellowship.
When I was first ask about the possibility of running for an
elected office in the General Military Council, I never dreamed
that someday I would be standing here tonight addressing you as
the new elected and installed General Commanding.

BALTIMORE, MD—Sovereign Grand Marshal Walter R. Hoenes
will be the speaker of the day at the annual pilgrimage to the
grave of Brother Wildey—October 13, 2012.
When Thomas Wildey emigrated to America in 1817, the
British were still unpopular in the States because of the War of
1812. In that year Baltimore was suffering both a yellow fever
epidemic and mass unemployment. An outgoing personality,
Wildey missed companionship and advertised in the newspaper
to determine if there were any other Odd Fellows in Baltimore;
he requested them to meet him at the Seven Stars Inn.
On April 26, 1819, Wildey and the four men who
responded to his advertisement, formed the Independent Order
of Odd Fellows in North America, dedicating the Order to
achieve philanthropic goals.
At the time of his death in 1861, there were more than
200,000 members of the I.O.O.F. in 42 states. In the late 19th
century and early 20th century the IOOF became the largest
Fraternal Order in North America with more than two million
members.

Dearest Brothers and Sisters throughout the world:
Greetings of Friendship, Love and Truth!
It is our wish and hope that you can help us make our
dreams for Odd Fellowship in the Philippines a
reality as we try our best to help preserve and
continue the legacy of our worldwide Fraternal
Order. We love this Order very much and we hope
that we will become a respectable fraternity in the
Philippines and Asia by being very active in our
humanitarian projects, taking honor and pride in our
fraternity, being proficient in our rituals and making
our lodges financially strong. We are now
conducting studies to make these ambitions come
true. We also want to be an asset to Odd Fellowship
throughout the world.
Our wish starting this year is to get help and
donations from Odd Fellows and Rebekahs all over
the world and raise funds to help us purchase a piece
of land where we can build the first Odd Fellows
Hall and Home in the Philippines which will serve
various strategic, ethical and humanitarian purposes
written on the following pages. This year, we plan to
raise an amount of $119,073.20 to acquire a 642
square meters of land situated in a strategic location.
We hope to purchase the land as soon as possible
because the prices of properties in Dumaguete City
are getting expensive every year. Afterwards, we
plan to raise funds of approximately $292,782.93 to
construct a 2-storey building on the said location
which will serve an essential purpose for our Order in
the Philippines and venue for philanthropic projects.
This may be ambitious but this will be a way of
making our Order become financially self-sufficient,
be respected in the Philippines and assure its
continuous growth in the city and in the country.
Because we belong in a third-world country where
money earned in a day is usually just enough to feed
our mouths in a day, it is our deep seeking and
hoping that your jurisdiction can provide some
donation and support to make this project a
possibility and a reality. Many Lodges,
Encampments and Grand Lodges around the world
donated to S.O.S. Villages, and many more other
foundations and people in need, now is our heartfelt
plead that helping your own brothers and sisters in
the Philippines through this project will also be
highly supported by your jurisdiction or individually.
Any amount, whether big or small, will be
appreciated and a plaque with all names of Grand
Lodges, Rebekah Assemblies, Grand Encampments,
Lodges, Encampment, Cantons and/or individual
members who donate a remarkable amount for this
project will be attached in the building as recognition
and gratitude for the support. We will also offer to
the leader of the Jurisdiction, lodge or person with

THIS MAY SOUND AMBITIONS BUT THIS
IS POSSIBLE AND THIS CAN HAPPEN AND WE
HOPE WE WILL MAKE THIS HAPPEN
TOGETHER…ALL WE NEED IS SUPPORT
FROM ALL BROTHERS AND SISTERS ALL
OVER THE WORLD…
Many lodges and Grand Lodges across the world
donate thousands to several charitable foundations
and associations such as the S.O.S. Villages, etc.; we
invest to help other people in need. Why not
INVEST for our membership, why not DONATE
in developing and expanding Odd Fellowship and
why not invest to help our brothers and sisters in
the Philippines help preserve the existence of our
Fraternal Order and continue its legacy?
Every big thing can become a small thing if we
all help each other. And every small thing we do can
become a big thing if we combine them together.
Any small donation, if we gather them together, can
make this project happen. With less, we can do so
little.
With your help on this big project, you are
helping your fraternal brothers and sisters not just
help themselves and their lodges grow but you are
also helping more and more other people because
supporting this project will allow Odd Fellowship in
the Philippines to continue all the good works they
have started and even develop more charitable
projects in their country and become more proficient
in the initiation ceremonies. Because each building
will be income-generating, this will make Odd
Fellowship Philippines a financial asset and NOT a
liability.
WE REALLY NEED YOUR SUPPORT TO
MAKE THIS COME TRUE. THANK YOU!

INDEPENDENT ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS
Membership Committee “A PROGRAM OF THE SOVEREIGN GRAND LODGE AND THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REBEKAH ASSEMBLIES TO OBTAIN MEMBERSHIP GAINS IN ALL UNITS OF ALL BRANCHES OF THE FAMILY OF ODD FELLOWSHIP”
September 2012
Greetings my Brothers and Sisters,
We have just returned from the joint sessions held in Cincinnati. We are pleased to report that
information presented at the sessions indicates that more than 1,200 new members were initiated into the
Order last year. That is great news. Unfortunately, the reports also indicate that the attrition rates in all
branches of the Order continue to exceed the rate at which new members are brought into the Order.
The reports make apparent that in many jurisdictions the very existence of the various units of the
Order are threatened by the continuing decline in membership. In fact, if the trend is not reversed soon, the
very existence of the Order is threatened. This trend must and can be reversed if we all do our part.
Over the past several years much time, effort, and money has been devoted to our membership
programs. Both printed and on-line materials on the membership programs are available to assist
recruitment. The materials are available to ALL members, not just the officers of your grand body, your
local lodge, and a membership committee. From what we have observed during our visitations to
jurisdictions over the last two years we know that the information is not reaching the local lodge level or is
not being used effectively. We urge each of you to take advantage of those materials and use them in your
individual recruitment efforts. Remember recruitment starts with a one-on-one conversation about the Order
with your friends, relatives, co-workers, and others with who you have interaction.
We will be continuing use of the “You Make a Difference” and the “Celebrate What’s Right” videos in
this year’s membership program. However, for those and other membership tools to be effective the
information of tools must reach the local lodge and individual member. Your membership committee is
ready and willing to help with these efforts. While we cannot attend each lodge, we are available to make
presentations at grand body sessions, conclaves, regional meetings, etc. If you or your jurisdiction is
interested in a membership presentation, please contact either of us or any member of the committee.
For any membership program to be successful, it is not enough for the Grand Bodies to have
membership programs. All units of the Order must have a membership program tailored to specific area in
which the lodge is located. What works in one area or jurisdiction may not work in other areas. Do not be
afraid to try something new.
Our membership theme this year is “I Got One.” If we all “Got One” we can double the membership
in the Order over night!
Only you can grow our Order. Help make a difference; cherish yesterday, live today, dream tomorrow;
bridge the gap; and communicate. Remember, it’s not you and me, it’s we. And, it’s not us and them, it’s
we. Don’t let our membership decline to the point of no return!
Sincerely and Fraternally,
Charles L. Renninger, SGM, Co-Chairman
Laura Argue, P-IARA, Co-Chairman
