Understanding Word Processing Programs

“The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.”― Winston Churchill

Here’s an example of a mechanical typewriter. Notice the ink ribbon and the unchangeable font keys.
Presenter

The electric version – this is a portable typewriter.
Presenter

Finally, IBM came out with an electric typewriter which would allow you to change fonts.
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Eventually, the typewriter evolved into a word processor. With a unit like this, you could type and see what you had typed on the screen. You could navigate on the screen to make changes and corrections; you could save your work on a disk; and, you could, of course, print your document. No more whiteout. No more retyping entire pages. Most word processors had the capability of using different fonts although the selection was usually pretty limited.

Personal computers soon added to the abilities of word processing software.

WordPerfect for DOS

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Although there were other DOS word processing software programs available, WordPerfect became the front runner. Law firms – early users of computers – became massive users of WordPerfect as contracts, court briefs, wills and other legal documents consumed fewer and fewer man-hours.
Presenter
Presentation Notes
When Windows finally came out with a GUI (Graphic User Interface) WordPerfect came out with their version to work with the new GUI but, they were late to the game.
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Microsoft Word was released to work with the new Windows 95. In many cases, Word was packaged with Win 95. This and the fact the WordPerfect version which would work with the new Windows didn’t come out right away and when it did, it was “buggy,” caused WordPerfect to lose its popularity.

Word Processing programs are direct descendants of the

typewriter. What word processing programs are

best at is text documents.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Although best at text documents, word processors often come with templates for other things.

A Flyer template.
Presenter
Presentation Notes
Simply filling in the template is pretty easy. Notice I was easily able to put my logo in.
Presenter
Presentation Notes
When I tried to move my logo, this Word template would not let me center it in the column.

Word processing software works fantastically for text

documents and works well for graphic documents when you

can use the templates provided or created.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
For the most flexibility in creating documents with both text and graphics, you need to use a program like Microsoft Publisher. There are alternatives but that’s another webinar.

Fonts and Graphics

When you create a document in a word processor using special fonts and/or graphics (pictures, borders, etc.), if you print your document out, no problem.

However, if you email your document to someone, it may turn out looking completely different than what you created. That’s because graphics are often ripped out of email and attached and a font won’t show up on someone else’s computer unless they have the same font.

The solution? Convert your word processed document into a PDF.

PDF = Portable Document Format

Each PDF file encapsulates a complete description of a fixed-layout flat document, including the text, fonts, graphics, and other information needed to display it.
