Ukrainian Research Network UARNET - Ukrainian Academic Research Network (NASU institutes) URAN - Ukrainian Research & Academic Network (Educational institutes and universities)
Today UARNET operates their own DWDM systems in the backbone, and their multi-lambda international connectivity reaches total capacity of over 100Gbit/s. The user base of UARNET includes over 50 NASU institutes, 40 universities, 80 research institutes and few hundred of schools and colleges
The initial member list (2006) of URAN includes 40 universities and there are currently 79 members of the association, including 6 units of NASU.
The time for international scientific cooperation
Today the international cooperative projects require the appropriate informational and computational support. The one of the instrument to satisfy these permanently increasing requirements is the grid technology. It turns out to be so efficient that now it is used in all fields of science.
Necessity to explore grid technologies in Ukraine is stimulated by the intensive studies in such fields as high energy physics and astrophysics, astronomy, molecular biology and biophysics, material science, Earth sciences and in many other fundamental and applied studies as well .
Intention of the Ukrainian scientists to be involved in many international scientific projects is one of crucial reasons to develop a grid infrastructure in NASU.

Example of the Ukrainian - EC collaboration The first grid clusters of this infrastructure have been made in the Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology (as a part of CMS experiment at CERN) and in the Bogolyubov Institute for Theoretical Physics that has been included (together with cluster of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev) into the grid infrastructure of the ALICE Collaboration at CERN. Ukraine signed a MOU of WLCG

History of the Ukrainian National Grid
2006 The Academic Program “Implementation of grid technology and construction of clusters in NASU” was
started - Clusters in 5 institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU) were created - Ukraine signed a MOU of WLCG - The first grid segment of NASU (6 institutes of NASU and the universities in Kiev and Lviv) started to work - Ukraine became a non-contracting member of EGEE - Ukraine became a member of EGI-DS
2007
- Distributed Grid infrastructure of NASU (Ukrainian Academic Grid, 22 institutes of NASU, KNU, KPI in Kiev, Kharkov, Lvov,
Dnepropetrovsk, Sumy, Donetsk) was created. - The Ukrainian Branch of the World Data Center is integrated into
grid infrastructure.

Proposals for cooperation
The Ukrainian GRID-community is interested in the international cooperation with the European partners related to the following activities:
- development of the grid-infrastructure for broadening of grid-technology applications in various fields of human activity;
- software (middleware, grid services, grid applications etc.) modernization
- applications of grid-technology in science and technologies (physics, astrophysics, nanoscience, material science, earth-sciences, etc) ;
- medical grid applications (telemedicine, medical databases, etc.
