Career Showcase Advice

Preparing for Career Showcase: 1. Make sure to attend the career showcase starting your freshman year as you generate face time value. You might

not get hired this year but the following year when you meet the recruiters again, they'll remember 2. Always prepare a list of companies you want to talk too. Get the map and highlight all companies you want to talk

to so you know where they’re located and you don’t have to spend precious time searching for them. 3. Prepare a 30 second - 1 minute elevator speech that includes the classes you’re taking, your year and graduation

date, why you’re qualified for the position, and something to show that you have researched that company. 4. Apply online before you go to Career Showcase if the companies you are interested in have online applications. 5. Don’t be afraid to ask officers/seniors to help/for guidance in getting prepared for career showcase. Career

showcase can be a lot of pressure but you can always turn to other ChemE’s to help ease it. Resume:

1. Your name is the most important item, so it should be the largest font size. Don't have any pictures. 2. Nobody wants to be handed a giant block of text to read, so create some white space. Instead of writing in

paragraph form, use sentence fragments and bullet points. Always start with an action verb. 3. Print your resume on good resume paper, not just computer paper. You can find this at an office supply store. 4. Take your resume to the CRC or resume critique sessions to polish it to perfection. Any mistake on your resume

will likely lead to it being thrown out. Clothing:

1. Skirts need to be at least knee-length. If you wear pants, make sure the hem just touches the tops of your shoes. The pant legs should not drag the ground or show your ankles. Wear close-toed black shoes.

2. The blouse is also a good opportunity to add color, but nothing too bright or neon. Make sure you don’t wear chunky jewelry and keep your hair out of your face.

3. Make sure your shirt is wrinkle-free and your belt matches your shoes. Your socks need to match your pants. 4. The best colors to wear for a suit are dark blue or black. A white or light blue undershirt goes well with this.

At Showcase: 1. Have your resume out while you're in line. You will likely wait for some time before talking to a recruiter, so this

is a good time to look over notes that you have on the company. 2. When it’s your turn, approach your recruiter, give a proper handshake, and give your elevator speech. 3. Prepared a couple questions to ask the recruiter, and make sure to ask for the recruiter’s business card.

The Interview: 1. Do some additional research on the company and be prepared to ask them more questions. 2. Look at practice questions beforehand, and think about time when you worked in a group, when you solved a

problem, and any leadership roles. Focus on challenges faced and how you overcame them. Never lie! 3. Don’t wear the same thing you wore to showcase. If you only have one suit, change up your blouse or shirt/tie. 4. Arrive at the interview early in order to give yourself enough time to look over your notes and relax. 5. At the end of the interview, say thank you! Ask for a business card so you can send a thank you letter and have a

point of contact. Don’t leave the interview before knowing an approximate timeline of when to expect a response.
