Dave: Ifoundtheoriginalbookstobeentirelyincomprehensiblebutthere'sbasicallywaysofspeakingthatbypassalotofconsciousprocessing.Whenpeopleuseit,youcansometimesconvincepeopletodothingsthattheyaren'treallyquiteawarethatthey'redoing.Youcanalsouseittohelppeopleinatherapeuticcontext.It'snotagoodtechnologyorbadtechnologybutwhenyoutrytouseittomakepeoplebuyyoursnakeoil,it'stotallynotcool.I'veseenthathappenacoupletimeswiththenonprofitthatIrun.You'relike,"Look.You'renotevengoodatwhatyou'redoing.It'snotokaytobeusingthosetechniquestotrytogetpeopletouseyourstuff."Youcancallitthedarksideofusinglanguageoryoucouldactuallyuseittohelpsomeoneovercomearealproblemthatthey'redealingwithlikeanaddictionorsomesortofpsychologicalblock.

Essentially,it'sthestudyofhowpeopledothingswell.It'sthestudyofhowwecommunicatebetterwithourselvesandotherpeople.It'showwecanmanageourmoodsandreallyhowwecanhackourlivestobemoreproductiveandincreaseourperformancelevels.Youfocusedonthelinguistics.Therearealotoflinguisticsinthere,alotoflinguisticswhicharereallyfun,especiallywhenyouusethemonyourselfandthatkindofvoiceinyourhead.
There'splentymorethanthelinguistics.That'sthereasonthatIgotintoitbecauseIusedtoworkinradio.Iwasinterestedinmakingmyshowabetterexperienceforpeopletolistentoandgetthemtolistentolongeraswellandgetmorelisteners.That'swhyIgotintoitbuttherearesomanyotherfacetstoit.
IthinkNLP,it'snotthegreatestname,isit?Itwasinventedinthe70sbyRichardBandlerandJohnGrinderinCalifornia.Theycameupwiththisname.Iguesstheycameupwithit.I'mnotquitesurebutIguessthat'swhencomputersstartedtotakeoff.Computerswerethenewinthing.Theywantedacomputer-yterminologyintheirphrasebutactually,Ithinksomethingalongthelinesofneurohackingmightbemoreappropriateforthisdayandagebecausethat'sessentiallywhatitis.
Dave: It'strue.Infact,eitherWilliamGibsonorprobablymoreBruceSterlingwroteawholebookabouttheideaoffindingonesoundthatunlockedpeople'snervoussystems.It'sahugesocietalchangesitmade.
There'sdefinitelyabitofasciencefictioncomputerprogrammingperspectivetothisideathatjustusingwordsandgesturesproperlycanhaveaneffectonpeople'sbiology.It'sactuallyaverydeepsciencebutwhatIthinkisinterestingaboutyourworkisthatratherthanmystifyingitwhichisfranklywhatIsawwhenIreadtheoriginalbooks.Thisisnotsticking.

Then,ifthevoiceissomethingthatcanoftenbequiteunpleasanttoyouorcertainlycauseyoudistress,perhapslookatgivingitacompletelydifferentvoice.Insteadofitbeingyoutalkingtoyourself,giveitavoiceofMickeyMouseorwhoeveritmightbe.Noticehowitsoundswiththosesamewords,thatsameinternaldialoggoingonbutwithBartSimpson'stellingyouwhattodoandhowthatchangesthewaythatyouperceiveyourowninternalvoice.
