The Muskoka Best Start Network is encourag-ing everyone to post a sign supporting the fathersof Muskoka.

Businesses, agencies and schools have beeninvited to help celebrate the importance of fathersby displaying one of the following phrases ontheir message boards:

• Fatherhood: It’s the best job on the planet! • Dads Make a Difference• Fatherhood Rocks!• What a Difference a Dad Makes Research shows that having an involved father

figure or a male role model is extremely impor-tant in children’s development. An involved fatheror father figure is one who takes part and is con-cerned for the health and well-being of his child.

Over a year ago, a group gathered in Muskokato discuss fathering. They made it their goal to letfathers, families and other community membersknow how important fathers are to both our chil-dren and our community.

An involved father, or father figure, improves

everything from birth weights and breastfeedingrates to reducing teen parenthood and incarcera-tion. Did you know that children of involvedfathers are twice as likely to go to college? Fatherinvolvement is also positively correlated withchildren experiencing overall life satisfaction andless depression.

Men’s emotional involvement with their chil-dren was found to act as a buffer against work-related stresses and improves satisfaction rates inmarriage. And this is just a small portion of theresearch evidence gathered.

The Muskoka Best Start Network’s overallgoal is to ensure children are ready and eager toachieve success by the time they start Grade 1then went on to agree that promoting fatherinvolvement could be included in their initiatives.
