Businesses, agencies and schools have been invited to help celebrate the importance of fathers by displaying one of the following phrases on their message boards: • Fatherhood: It’s the best job on the planet! • Dads Make a Difference • Fatherhood Rocks! • What a Difference a Dad Makes Research shows that having an involved father figure or a male role model is extremely impor- tant in children’s development. An involved father or father figure is one who takes part and is con- cerned for the health and well-being of his child. Over a year ago, a group gathered in Muskoka to discuss fathering. They made it their goal to let fathers, families and other community members know how important fathers are to both our chil- dren and our community. An involved father, or father figure, improves everything from birth weights and breastfeeding rates to reducing teen parenthood and incarcera- tion. Did you know that children of involved fathers are twice as likely to go to college? Father involvement is also positively correlated with children experiencing overall life satisfaction and less depression. Men’s emotional involvement with their chil- dren was found to act as a buffer against work- related stresses and improves satisfaction rates in marriage. And this is just a small portion of the research evidence gathered. The Muskoka Best Start Network’s overall goal is to ensure children are ready and eager to achieve success by the time they start Grade 1 then went on to agree that promoting father involvement could be included in their initiatives.
