W elcome to The 2015 Poughkeepsie Read, a chance to read and engage with great literature through a wide variety of events across the region. The Poughkeepsie Public Library District is pleased to partner with other public libraries, school districts,
colleges, and many civic, arts and educational organizations in this effort, and is grateful to our local business and foundation sponsors for their critical support.
John Steinbeck said, “Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen.” As our community examines Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men, we trust the literature will spark new ideas and understandings of ourselves, our history, environment, social practices, economy, culture, and more. The artwork highlighted here is the product of local teens’ reflections on The Grapes of Wrath.
Even though the calendar inside shows more than 90 public programs, this is only a portion of what is happening during The Poughkeepsie Read. All of our local high schools, many private book clubs, Center for Lifetime Study adult students, BOCES Adult Learning students, individuals incarcerated at Green Haven Correctional, migrant farm worker children, and SPARK Media students will focus on the Steinbeck novels this fall, all of which are likely to produce many lively discussions and fascinating essays. Several middle school classes and book groups are reading the dynamic poetic work by Karen Hesse, Out of the Dust. Survival stories are being recorded and workshops for teachers held; theatrical productions are being created and gallery exhibits planned. The diversity is astonishing, a credit to the many hours of planning over the past year on the part of dedicated partners.
Go ahead -- visit another library, join a discussion, enjoy an edible book, a dramatic performance or scholarly presentation! There are programs for all ages and most events are totally free. For more details on each event, visit either www.poklib.org or the website of the host venue.
