RegardingthePieta,GeorgioVasari,thegreatarthistorianwrote:"Itwouldbeimpossibleforanycraftsmanorsculptor,nomatterhowbrilliant,evertosurpassthegraceordesignofthiswork,ortrytocutandpolishthemarblewiththeskillthatMichelangelodisplayed.Itiscertainlyamiraclethataformlessblockofstonecouldeverhavebeenreducedtoaperfectionthatnatureisscarcelyabletocreateintheflesh."
