MARBLE FALLS — Two of the major media players in the Highland Lakes joined forces Jan. 17 when The Picayune announced the purchase of KBEY 103.9 FM. “This is an incredible opportunity for The Picayune, KBEY and the Highland Lakes com-munity,” said Amber Weems, Victory Publishing president and publisher of The Picayune. “We are combining the power of The Picayune’s print and digital assets with the airwaves to create Radio Picayune, a voice for the people of the Highland Lakes.” KBEY will become part of the Victory Publishing, Ltd. family, which owns The Picayune, The Picayune Area Wide Phone Book, The Picayune TV and 101 Fun Things in the Highland Lakes. It is a locally-owned and -operated compa-ny with a proven history of serving the community. Tim and Stacey Walker, the current owners of KBEY, will join The Picayune team for several weeks to help with the transition while awaiting FCC approval. The Walkers will continue to own Two Way Communications and will focus on Christian radio projects. Stacey Walker still will work with the Marble Falls Independent School District and serve as a director for the Marble Falls/Lake LBJ Chamber of Commerce. “We’re excited about the radio station merg-ing with The Picayune and its incredible products because they will all strengthen each other,” Tim Walker said. “My wife and I love this community. One of the things that led to the decision to sell the station was an opportunity for us to assist in several ministry engineering projects. We feel that’s what we’re called to do now.” KBEY 103.9 FM plays Top 40 country as well as many classic standards. Along with the Walkers, longtime Highland Lakes radio personality Ben Shields is moving over to The Picayune. Shields handles much of the production duties with the radio station. He also is the on-air per-sonality for KBEY 103.9 FM’s popular Afternoon Car Tunes show 4-6 p.m. weekdays.

And the thrills begin for Cypress Mill resident Jay Reichert and his crew of off-road desert-racing enthusiasts
BY DANIEL CLIFTONPicayune Editor
BAJA PENINSULA, MEXICO — Standing in the Mexican desert on a November night and learning your chances of finishing the 2012 Baja 1000 off-road race just went end over end wasn’t how Cypress Mill resident Jay Reichert envi-sioned this trip going. His teammate and other half of R&D Motorsports, Charles Dorrance, had just called in to report that, while racing through the desert about 225 miles south of the start-ing line, he had flipped the team’s new tro-phy truck going about 80 mph. “He told me it looked like we were out of the race,” Reichert said. Reichert wasn’t upset despite the fact the truck, which cost $600,000, was sitting in the dirt with pieces scattered about or that the hopes of finishing, and possibly win-ning, the world’s toughest race had been smashed with it. Instead, he just shook his head and accepted it. “That’s racing,” Reichert said several months later when asked what was going through his mind. “But then I called Charles and told him, ‘Let’s wait until we can get a crew out there before we decide we’re out (of the race).’”

DESERT-RACING TEXAN Though he’s a Lone Star State native, Reichert discovered the off-road racing bug in the 1980s while living in Albuquerque, N.M. “I just thought it would be fun, so I drug some friends out with me,” he said. Reichert began working his way up
through the “buggy” ranks. A buggy is one of the desert-racing staples, with large tires, beefy suspen-sion, an open cockpit and a tubular frame. In 1993, Reichert entered the granddaddy of desert off-road racing:

The Picayune made it to Santa Claus, Ind. — yes, there truly is a little town named Santa Claus — on Sept 26. with Highland Lakes residents Kathy and George Walker. The jolly old fella was in Indiana making sure things were going according to plan for his Dec. 25 delivery. Santa had on his summer outfit because it wasn’t quite cold enough for his winter wear. the Baja 1000. The race gets its name from the fact the course cuts across about 1,000 miles of desert on the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. It starts in Ensenada and heads south to La Paz. One of Reichert’s biggest accom-plishments came in 2000. To commem-orate the new millennium, SCORE International added 1,000 miles to its marquee race, transforming it into the Baja 2000-A Race For The Ages. Competing in the Pro Truck/SS class, Reichert and teammate Scott Steinberger won their class while fin-ishing 17th overall.
A TEXAS TEAM In 2002, Reichert put his desert rac-ing behind him when he moved back to Texas. But he never shook the feeling of racing through the desert, so, in 2009, he bought another buggy “just to have some fun.” Eventually, Reichert met up with Dorrance. The two formed R&D Motorsports. In 2012, the team decided it was time to move into the the trophy truck class. “If you looked up the word ‘macho’ in the dictionary, you’d find a picture of a trophy truck,” Reichert said. Reichert and Dorrance turned to Jimco Racing in California for a trophy truck. The team took delivery of Trophy Truck No. 26 in October 2012 and headed for Mexico soon after. While
Dorrance and Reichert are the drivers, it takes a crew of 30 to keep the truck going. On Nov. 15, Dorrance and his nav-igator, Craig Brockman, hit the gas at the starting line and raced into the Mexican desert. But trouble struck a little more than 220 miles into the race when Trophy Truck No. 26 flipped end over end. A team of R&D Motorsports tech-nicians arrived at the broken vehicle, but, instead of throwing in the towel, the crew was able to repair the truck. At the 531-mile mark, Trophy Truck No. 26 pulled in for the driver and nav-igator change. Reichert and his naviga-tor, Marble Falls High School junior Nick Cano, jumped in and raced off. At 3:30 a.m. Nov. 17, about 30 hours and 15 minutes from when the truck left the start line in Ensenada, Riechert and Cano crossed the finish line in 20th place. “It wasn’t as good as we had hoped, but we finished,” Reichert said. With the 2012 race season behind them, the R&D Motorsports team is turning its attention to 2013. The next time Trophy Truck No. 26 hits the desert will be March 21-23 at the Best In The Desert General Tire Mint 400 followed by the 45th Tecate SCORE International Baja 500 on May 31-June 2. For more on Reichert and R&D Motorsports, go to www.reichertracing.com. Read more about Reichert and Trophy Truck No. 26 at DailyTrib.com. daniel@thepicayune.com
Next race is in MarchFROM PAGE 1

Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids and co-enzyme Q10, or CoQ10, might reduce levels of pros-tate-specific antigen, or PSA, a pro-tein produced by the prostate gland that indicates an increased risk of prostate cancer, according to a recent study. CoQ10 is an antioxidant, and lev-els are typically low in patients with cardiovascular diseases, muscular dystrophies, Parkinson’s disease, cancers, diabetes and HIV or AIDS. The study included 504 healthy men with serum PSA levels lower or equal to 2.5 nanograms per millili-ter. The participants were randomly assigned to one of four groups. Each group corresponded to a different supplement, either omega-6 fatty acids, omega-3 fatty acids, CoQ10 or a placebo. The men took two capsules daily for 12 weeks. Serum PSA levels were docu-mented before and after the study. Omega-3 fatty acids and CoQ10 treatment significantly reduced the serum PSA level by 30 percent and 33 percent, respectively. In contrast, omega-6 fatty acids therapy signifi-cantly increased the serum PSA con-centration by 15 percent.
Atkins owns and operates Atkins Pharmacy in Marble Falls. He can be reached at (830) 693-2972 or visit the website at www.atkinspharmacy.com.

BURNET — For 85-year-old Otto Gruetzner and his wife, 82-year-old Fay, retirement from the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office has motivat-ed the couple to put themselves back into the job market. “We’re looking for a job,” said Otto, who served civil papers with his wife at his side for the local law enforcement agency since 1997. “Pay don’t make a difference.” Burnet County Sheriff W.T. Smith hosted a retirement ceremony Jan. 16 for the couple, who expect to maintain their certified peace offi-cers status. They received personalized sher-iff’s deputy badges in front of an audience of family, staff and area law enforcement.

Fay and Otto Gruetzner, who are in their 80s, retired from their jobs as vol-unteer reserve deputies at the Burnet County Sheriff’s Office. Members of law enforcement congratulated and thanked them for 15 years of service during a ceremony Jan. 16 at the sheriff’s office. STAFF PHOTO BY CONNIE SWINNEY
“These folks have served Burnet County without getting paid a dime. No telling how many thousands of hours they put in,” Smith said. “They have been an unbelievable asset for us. They’ve done so much for this department and this community.” The Gruetzners have been married for 65 years. But it wasn’t until they were in their 50s that they began pur-suing a career in law enforcement. The couple quickly discovered it was something they enjoyed. “If you don’t like your job, you really can’t put your heart into it,” Fay Gruetzner said. “We like the people we worked for.” Before settling into their positions in Burnet County in 1997, they both served as reserve constables in Travis County. In Burnet County, they began as reserves handling prison transports and eventually moved to serving civil papers in family court cases. They’re best known for riding in the
same unit, when all others rode solo. “We’ve been together almost all our lives and to separate us was almost impossible,” Otto Gruetzner said. “I didn’t want her out by herself late, so we teamed up, and it worked out fine.” The couple, who lives in Highland Haven, said keeping busy is at the top of their list of retirement goals. “We want to find something to do. We have to have a reason to get up in the morning,” Otto Gruetzner said. “We can only take so much ‘I Love Lucy,’ ‘Andy Griffith Show,’ ‘Gunsmoke,’ ‘Bonanza’ and ‘M.A.S.H.’” They leave their jobs satisfied they forged lasting and positive relation-ships with co-workers and the public. “We got to know a lot of people. We’d run into people out (in public.) They’d come talk to us,” he said. “The way we treated them, they remem-bered us. It worked real well for us.” connie@thepicayune.com

MARBLE FALLS — When Marble Falls High School choir direc-tor Bryce Gage turned to a group of youth to help fill out the cast of “The Sound of Music,” it didn’t take a whole lot of prompting to get the kids ready for the upcoming production. “Many of them already knew the songs,” Gage said. “This is such a pop-ular musical that a lot of the younger kids and our high school students grew up with it.” The Marble Falls High School Choir and Musical Theatre Department is producing “The Sound of Music” on Jan. 24 and Jan. 26-28 at the high school auditorium, 2101 Mustang Drive. All show times are 7 p.m. with the exception of the Jan. 27 show, which is 2 p.m. Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for adults. While most of the roles, including the leads of Maria and Capt. Georg von Trapp, are filled by members of the high school choir program, sever-al younger actors will share the stage with them. One of the beauties of producing such a popular musical is how familiar the entire cast is with the storyline and even the songs. The musical, written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, first hit the stage in 1959, but it probably didn’t become part of the American culture until 1965, when the movie, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, hit the silver screen. That production makes regular TV appearances, giving new generations an opportunity to experi-ence the story. For those unfamiliar with the story, the musical tells the tale of the von Trapp family and their governess, Maria. The story is set in Austria during the period just before World War II. Gage said he selected the musical for several reasons, including the pop-ularity of the story and its music. “‘The Sound of Music’ is a classic and a great crowd pleaser,” he said. “And it’s one I haven’t produced before or been in.” While the high school students and their younger studies are familiar with the musical, they’ve still had to put in plenty of hard work preparing for the opening. There is plenty of choreog-raphy and songs to get just right. In past Marble Falls High School choir productions, there was typical-ly a large chorus part, but that’s not the case with “The Sound of Music,” Gage said. “The show is really carried by indi-vidual songs,” he said. “But I think that’s one of the things that makes this particular musical so special.” Along with the performances, the department has constructed elaborate sets for the musical. Marble Falls Middle School theatre arts teacher Jon Clark spearheaded that effort, Gage said. The musical features an orchestra complete with a string section from Austin. “This has the potential to be our best production,” Gage said. While tickets are available at the door, Gage recommended people call the choir office at (830) 798-3664 and make reservations. daniel@thepicayune.com

In November, Victory Publishing merged its subscription-based news-paper, The River Cities Tribune, with The Picayune, a free weekly newspa-per. The move was a strategic decision that prepared the company for future expansion into other means of com-munication, Weems told readers when announcing the merger. Adding the radio station to Victory Publishing, Ltd.’s media holdings will further serve readers and listeners, Weems said. “We’ve been associated with the local news for over 40 years,” Weems said. “The radio station gives us the means to deliver the news now with more immediacy. Our plan when we closed The River Cities Tribune was to shift our assets to become a stronger media company and better serve this community.” That immediacy will be enhanced by the online news reporting found on ThePicayuneTV.com. As the news department works to bring the latest and most in-depth coverage in the area to its listeners and readers, fans of the radio station don’t have to worry about a complete pro-gram overhaul. “We’re not going to change the music or basic format of KBEY,” Weems said. “But we are going to give it some of The Picayune flavor.” Listeners still will be able to catch the morning show 6-10 a.m. weekdays on 103.9 FM each day featuring Wade Hibler. He will be joined by Tim Walker for the next several weeks. Hibler is the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Agent for Burnet County. Along with his co-hosting role, Hibler handles the Ag Report segment, which airs 6:20 a.m. and 8:20 a.m. weekdays. KBEY 103.9 will continue to pro-vide local news, weather and sports. Connie Swinney will take over most of the broadcast news duties with The Picayune sportswriter Jennifer Fierro bringing her sports enthusiasm and knowledge to the air waves. Swinney has been part of the Highland Lakes news community since 1998. She has experience in all realms of the news industry, including print, radio, magazine and TV. She’s helped lead The Picayune in developing its online presence and ThePicayuneTV.com. Along with Swinney and Fierro, The Picayune staff member Jared Fields will continue to add his talents as reporter and video producer to the mix. Since joining The Picayune, Fields has helped build the video portion of the news department and looks forward to adding his talents to radio. “This merger allows us to continue to build on the strengths of our staff,” Weems said. “We believe this is defi-nitely a win for both our company and the community. We’re extremely excit-ed about this endeavor and the future.”
The recipe feeds 10-12 people. Instead of cutting the recipe in half to serve fewer people, freeze the rest for later.
n 5 slices bacon, cut into small pieces n 1½ cups diced white or yellow onionn 8 cloves fresh garlicn 1 teaspoon cominon 1 tablespoon chili powdern salt, course ground black peppern 2 cups carrots, sliced in thin roundsn 4 quarts chicken stock plus 8 cups watern 1 10-ounce can Rotel tomatoesn 6 guajillo peppers, dried n 3 14-ounce canned garbanzo beans, drainedn 1½ pounds cooked, shredded chicken
In 6- to 8-quart soup pot, add bacon and cook on medium-high heat until browned. Add 2 table-spoons of canola oil to soup pot with bacon and bacon grease.
Reduce heat to medium. Add onion and 6 cloves of minced garlic. Cook for 5 minutes. Stir every 45 seconds. Reduce heat to medium-low and continue to cook onions and garlic until translucent, about 10 minutes. Add comino, chili powder, ½ tea-spoon pepper and ½ cup water. Add carrots. Cover pot. Cook until carrots are slightly softened, about 10 min-utes. Add chicken stock, water, Rotel tomatoes and garbanzo beans. Bring to boil and then reduce heat to low. Add cooked chicken. Cover with lid cracked. Let soup cook on low for at least one hour.
In small saucepan, add 4 cups water. Place dried guajillo chilies, including stems, into water. Bring to boil and then turn off heat. Cover and allow to sit for 20 minutes. Strain chili water into bowl and reserve. Wearing gloves, pull stems off chilis and place in blender or food proces-sor along with 1 cup of chili water. Add 2 cloves garlic and 1 teaspoon salt. Blend until pureed.
When soup has cooked one hour, add chili puree to soup.
