Q.Whathasbeenthemostmemorablemomentforyouduringyourcareer?

A:ItwasthenightbeforeChristmasin1989andwehadbeenonlineasa911consolidateddispatchcenterforoneyearwhenwereceivedseveralcallsfromalocalretirementcenteraboutafire.Theretirementcenterwasanoldtenstoryhotelconvertedintoaretirementcenterwith125occupants.Afterallwassaidanddonewehad19EMSprovidersrespondingtothefire,thecityfiredepartmentandseveralvolunteerfiredepartments.Freezingtemperaturescausedicyconditionsonsidewalksandroads.Aftertheincident,therewere16residentswhodiedandroughly40takentolocalhospitals.ThatChristmasEveisforeveringrainedinmymind.

A:Honestlyitwastimeforachange.Ihadworked5differentplacesinthepast10yearsandwasreadytomakeanotherchange.911wasnewinJohnsonCityandIhadbeenworkingwithMotorolaasasalesconsultantforthepast3years.IhadworkedcloselywithallofthepublicsafetydepartmentsprovidingradiosystemsandfeltlikeIhadtheknowledgetoputtogetheragoodcommunicationscenter.IneverdreamedIwouldstayforalmost31years,butthechallengesandenjoymentmakeitallworthwhile.

Q:Whatareyoulookingforwardtoinyournextchapteroflife?

A:Ihavebeenblessedwithawonderfulfamily,3grownsonsand5grandchildren.Iplantotakeafewmonthstocatchuponthingsathomethathavebeenneglectedforyears.Ilookforwardtospendingmoretimewithmygrandchildrenandotherhobbiesincludingflyfishingandmetaldetecting.IalsohaveopportunitiestoservewithdifferentministriesthatIaminvolvedwith.Ilookforwardtonotbeingtiedtomycellphone24hours7daysaweek.ParttimeworkwhereIamnotresponsibleforanyoneelseisinmyfuture.

A:Ihavehadmanyopportunitiestoserveinvariouscapacitieswith911inthestate.Ihavemademanyfriendsandenjoyedworkingwithmanypeople.Iwillmissworkingwiththemandtheirfriendship.Ihavelearnedovermycareerthatyouneedtosurroundyourselfwithintelligentpeoplewhocareaboutthedistrictasmuchasyoudo.IcansaythatIworkwithmanyindividualsthatknowmorethanIdoandmakeourdistrictlookgoodandrunsmoothly.Igivecredittoouremployeesindispatchwhoalwaysdoagreatjobandtheofficestaffwhoprovidethemuchneededsupporttokeepthisteamrunningsmoothly.IfeelthatWashingtonCounty911isoneofthebestconsolidateddispatchcentersinthestatebecausededicatedindividualslovetheircareersandcaredeeplyfortherespondersandthepublic'ssafety.Ithinkthisiswhyourdistricthasbeensosuccessfulinwhatwedo.

Inmostgovernmentagenciesandbusinessenterprises,cybersecurityissuesarenottheresultofhackingintoserversbutgainingaccesstodesktopsandlaptopsfromenduseraccounts.Thismaybetheresultofphishing(fraudulentlygaininginformationthatcanbeusedagainstyou)oravirusthatcanrecordthekeystrokesonaPCtomalicioussoftwarethatcandestroyanetwork’sabilitytofunction.Mostthreatsenterthenetworkviapooroperatorpractices.Usinganofficeworkstation,orlaptop,toaccessshoppingsitesorsocialmediacouldallowvirusestosneakin.Onceinside,theyareoftenfreetotravelaboutand,inthecaseofransomware,couldlockyououtofyoursystemscompletely.ThishasalreadyoccurredinTennessee,andoncelockeditisgenerallyimpossibletoregainaccesstoasystemwithoutpayingtheransom.

Someofthesimplestpracticesarethemosteffective:DonotuseanofficePCorlaptoptoaccessshopping,socialmediaoranycommercialwebsites.Onlyusee-mailaccountsapprovedbyyourITsupport.Ensurevirusprotectionsoftwareiskeptuptodateandthatscansarecompletedregularly.Aboveall,neveruseathumb-drive,orUSBdrive,CD/DVDsoranyothermediathatyouhavebroughtfromhomeonyourofficemachines.Changeyourpasswordsregularlyandnevergiveoutyourpassword.Donotusesimplepasswordslikenameandbirthyear,children’snames,etc.,andalwaysensureyoudonotwriteyourpasswordwhereitcanbefoundeasily.Ifyoumustleaveyourworkstation,alwayslogofforlockthecomputer,evenifitisforabrieftime.IfyouhaveanyquestionsaboutcybersecurityinyourPSAP,pleasecontactus.

QA/QIProgramTrainingHeldTheDeniseAmberLeeFoundationwasthedrivingforcebehindtherecentlyreleased,firstever,ANSIStandardfortheEstablishmentofaQualityAssuranceandQualityImprovement(QA/QI)ProgramforPSAPs.Overthecourseoftwodays,sixty911professionalsfromtwenty-fourjurisdictionsusedtheANSIStandardasatooltoimprovethequalityofservicetocitizensinTennessee.Duringthecourse,attendeeslearned:

1.ThenecessarycomponentsoftheQA/QIprogramandhowtoobjectivelyevaluatetheperformanceofpublicsafetycommunicationspersonnel.

2.WhyaconsistentandeffectiveQA/QIprocessisvital(legallyandprofessionally)toyourPSAP.

3.HowtoinitiallycreateandimplementaQA/QIprogramtoinsureitssuccess.

4.HowaQA/QIprogramcanreduceemployeeturnoverandraisemorale.

TheprogramwasheldinDicksononMarch21standinLenoirCityonMarch23rd.Thankyoutoallofthe911professionalswhoparticipated.

TECB'sVirtualTrainingAcademyLaunchedDuringtheTECBmeetinginFebruary,TrainingCoordinatorJamisonPeevyhouseannouncedthattheTECB’sVirtualAcademyportalwasofficiallyLIVE.TheTECBanticipatedregistering500professionalsbytheendofthefirstyear,butwithinthefirstmonth,thesitereceived525requestsfrom27jurisdictionsforregistrations,exceedingtheentirefirstyear’sprojections.

Eachregistrantwascategorizedintooneoffivegroups:Telecommunicator,TrainingOfficer,Supervisor,Administrative,orGeographicInformationSpecialist.Thisstructureensuresthateachstudentreceivesappropriatetraininginatimelymanner.

Aftertheinitialdeployment,theV-Academyteamwillcontinuetodevelopnewcontentfocusedonthe911profession.Inaddition,localadministratorswillbegiventrainingontheadvancedfunctionalityofthelearningmanagementsystem.Thiswillallowlocaljurisdictionstheabilitytoauthorlocalcontentspecifictolocaloperations,therebyenhancingthesystem’svaluetoall911professionals.Formoreinformation,pleasecontactjamison.peevyhouse@tn.gov
