2 THE KAPELLE
A pressing out. A breathing out. Exhaling past vocal cords that cause the air to vibrate and past the tongue and through teeth and lips that form those vibrations in such a way that it makes our ears—and our hearts—tingle.
Expression. Taking a thought, feeling or emotion and making it audible—hesitant, confident, soothing, startling—through words with our friends and family, or through pitches with fellow musicians and audience members.
We encourage our students to play and sing expressively, with “expression”—to “say something” through the notes and phrases of music. We give of ourselves—conductors and players alike—when we make music. Whether or not the music is a direct expression of our faith, we are expressing our love of God, whose expression of love for us was in sending Jesus, whose expression of love for us was in giving his life for our redemption. God’s expression of love for us through Christ allows us to respond in thanks by offering of ourselves through God’s wonderful gift of music.
You, the audience, have expressed your support in this endeavor by being here. We are grateful for that. And you will, we hope, express appreciation of the efforts of our students through your applause. We are grateful for that, too. And, if you are related to any of the performers, you have expressed your love and care for them by bringing them to this point in their lives and by instilling in them a love for music. We are eternally grateful for that.
These gifted students before you today, our dedicated faculty, and all who so willingly serve our University wish to express our thanks to our Creator and Redeemer for the gift of music and for all of you. We hope you enjoy the concert.

Müde bin ich, geh zur Ruh Müde bin ich, geh zur Ruh,Schließe meine Äuglein zu:Vater, laß die Augen DeinÜber meinem Bette sein.
I am tired and want to rest,So close my little eyes.Father, let your eyesAlways be over my bed.
Hab ich unrecht heut’ getan,Sieh es, lieber Gott, nicht an.Deine Gnad’ und Christi BlutMacht ja allen Schaden gut.
Whatever wrong I have done todayDo not hold me, God, to them.Your grace and Christ’s bloodMakes all harm good.
Now the light has gone away;Father, listen while I pray.Asking Thee to watch and keepAnd to send me quiet sleep.
Jesus, Savior, wash awayAll that has been wrong today.Help me every day to be Good and gentle, more like Thee.
— Frances R. Havergal (1836–1879),tr. William Ewald
Selig sind die Toten Selig sind die Toten, die in dem Herren sterben von nun an. Ja, der Geist spricht: sie ruhen von ihrer Arbeit, und ihre Werke folgen ihnen nach.
Blessed are the dead who die in the Lordfrom now on.Yea, the Spirit speaks: they rest from their labor, and their works follow after them.— Revelation 14:13, tr. Ron Jeffers
Through Love to LightThrough love to light! Oh, wonderful the wayThat leads from darkness to the perfect day! From darkness and from sorrow of the nightTo morning that comes singing o’er the sea.Through love to light! Through light, O God, to thee,Who art the love of love, the eternal light of light!
— After-Song from The New Day,Richard Watson Gilder (1844–1909)
Jesus, Savior, Pilot MeJesus, Savior, pilot meOver life’s tempestuous sea;Unknown waves before me roll,Hiding rock and treach’rous shoal;Chart and compass come from Thee.Jesus, Savior, pilot me.
Though the sea be smooth and bright,Sparkling with the stars of night,And my ship’s path be ablazeWith the light of halcyon days,Still I need my need of Thee;Jesus, Savior, pilot me.
When the darkling heavens frown,And the wrathful winds come down,And the fierce waves, tossed on high,Lash themselves against the sky,Jesus, Savior, pilot meOver life’s tempestuous sea.
As a mother stills her child,Thou canst hush the ocean wild;Boist’rous waves obey Thy willWhen Thou say’st to them, “Be still!”Wond’rous Sovereign of the sea,Jesus, Savior, pilot me.
When at last I near the shoreAnd the fearful breakers roar‘Twixt me and the peaceful rest,Then, while leaning, on Thy breast,May I hear Thee say to me,“Fear not, I will pilot thee.”
— Edward Hopper (1818–1888)
Nunc dimittisLord, now lettest thou Thy servant depart in peace according to Thy word. For mine eyes have seen Thy salvation,Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles and to be the glory of Thy people Israel.Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.
— Luke 2:29-32, Book of Common Prayer (1662)
