Portugal is located on the South of Europe, on the Iberian Peninsula. the country is boarded by Spain to the north and east and by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south.

Norte Region

The Northern Region (Região Norte) is a Portuguese region which includes:Districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Vila Real and BragançaPart of the districts of Aveiro, Viseu and Guarda.Major cities are:Porto, Gaia, Braga.

Norte region Porto is the capital of Norte region.The city has about 1.8 million habitants making it the second largest city in the country after Lisbon.

Porto is known for the Porto wine, its monuments and its bridges on Douro.

Climate

City has a Meditterranean climate with influences of charasteristic oceanic climate (wet and soft winters and dry and warm summers). Maximum recorded temperature is +40oC and minimum is -5oC.

Old Town is often called Ribeira, it is a lively, adjacent to the river aldermanry.It’s placed between Cais da Ribeira and Torre dos Clérigos.

Praça de Liberdade –heart of the city withmonument depicting Peter IV Portuguese.

Towering on the westernside of the square Praçada Liberdade church andfamous tower Igreja e Torredos Clérigos. They weremade by italian architectNicolau Nasoni. Churchwas one of the first barocchurches built in Portugal.

MonumentsThe Porto Cathedral located in the historical center of the city of Porto, is one of the city's oldest monuments and one of the most important Romanesque monuments in Portugal.

Monuments

The Palácio da Bolsa was built in the 19th century by the city's Commercial Association in Neoclassical style. It is located in the Infante D. Henrique Square in the historical centre of Porto, designated World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The Maria Pia bridge (Ponte Maria Pia) is a railway bridge built in 1877 by Gustave Eiffel.

Monuments

The Luís  Bridge is a metal arch bridge that spans the Douro River between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. At the time of construction its span of 172 m was the longest of its type in the world.

Buses in Porto: Porto has got an excellent transportation, the buses get almost everywhere. www.stcp.ptTrams: There is only one tram number 18Metro: It is a network of 5 lines which is 60 km long and has got 70 tube stops. www.metro-porto.pt 

AccomodationLike in every european city, Porto has many forms of accomodation. From the cheapest (hostels) to the most expensive (hotels).

Hotels – price for one night in single room is about 45 to 60 euro. Hôtel de Bolsa,  Residencial Pao de AçucarHostels -  this kind of accomodation may interest mainly young people. Price per night is about 9 euro. (City Hostel, Fado Hostel) Camping - Porto, offers also many terrains for camping, Camping Orbitur Rio Alto. Price is about 20 euro for 4 family members.

Cuisine

Northerners are always dubbed tripeiros - the tripe eaters.We find in almost all restaurants. The typical recipe is preparing veal tripe, sausage, ham, chorizo and beans ...

The cuisine of North is rich and varied. Ingredients are hardly transformed and dishes are prepared at the base of the olive oil. Several portuguese national dishes are from the Northern Region.

CuisineCaldo verde (green soup)is traditional cabbage soupwhich is eaten mostly innorthest part of the countrybut also in all Portugal. It’sthick and green, made fromcabbage leafs cutted in verythin slices. In north it’sserved with slices of sausage(chouriço) and bread (broa).You can eat it as a starter ordinner.

Feijoada consists of black beans ( feijau means bean in Portugese),rice and beef. It is often served on Wednesdays and Saturdays whenever there is a chance for a family gathering or meeting with friends.

Francesinha  - typical sandwich form regions of Porto.In april 2011, it won the contest for the best sandwich, organised by AOL Organisation.

Wine

The Vinho Verde is a wine from the region Minho.His name refers to the freshness of his youth and to his colour as well, because this appellation produce red, white and some rose wines. Usually you should drink this wine when it is fresh.
