InvitationOn behalf of the Hydraulic Structures Committee of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR), and the Portuguese Water Resources Association (APRH), we are delighted to invite you to participate in the 4th International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures which will take place on February 9-11, 2012, in Porto, Portugal. The main objective of the Symposium is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and expertise among the various research and applied communities on the broad subject area of hydraulic structures, embracing their traditional use in water resources development, as well as their role in improving water management practices, water quality, and restoration of natural habitats. It will also provide an excellent opportunity for social networking and for strengthening the links between those communities.Currently, Portugal is responsible for the implementation of an ambitious hydroelectric development program (one of the biggest in Europe) which comprises the power upgrade of five existing large hydro schemes and the construction of nine new ones, most of them within the framework of the Portuguese National Programme for Dams with High Hydropower Potential. Due to its geographical location and industrial importance, the city of Porto has always been connected to the hydropower generation, thus being a particularly attractive venue for the 4th International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures!

The 4th International Symposium on Hydraulic StructuresThe upcoming event is the fourth in a successful series of the International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures organized by the Hydraulic Structures Committee of the IAHR, in cooperation with other Committees, Associations or Institutions; the first was held in Tehran, Iran, in 2004, and was jointly organized by the Iranian Hydraulic Association, the IAHR and the Iranian Water Research Institute; the second was held in Ciudad Guayana, Venezuela, in 2006, and was jointly organized by the Venezuelan Society of Hydraulic Engineering and the Hydraulic Structures Committee of the IAHR; and the third took place in Nanjing, China, in 2008, in result of a joint organization by Hohai University, the Nanjing Hydraulic Institute and the Hydraulic Structures Committee of the IAHR. In the present occasion, the 4th International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures will be co-located for the first time with the 11th Water Congress (February 6-8, 2012, Porto), which is the largest Portuguese event on hydraulics and water resources, organized every two years by the APRH.
