Crossroads Spirit Wear! Shortly, you will find the order form online at
SchoolCash by visiting http://crossroads.dsbn.org/ and clicking on the
SchoolCash link! Order forms will also be available at the office.
Samples for sizing will be available at the school the second week of school.
We encourage you to visit the school and size your child to ensure that the
clothing you order fits properly as we are not able to accept any returns of
clothing that does not fit.
Student Agendas
All students in grades 1 to 8 have been provided with a customized planner. This is an ideal tool
for both organization and communication. We are asking that each student pay $6.00 toward the
cost of the organizer as soon as possible. You can pay online by visiting
http://crossroads.dsbn.org/ and clicking on the SchoolCash link! Thank you in advance for your
prompt attention to this matter.
Please take a few minutes to discuss the importance of using the organizer faithfully with your
son/daughter. Look over the “Conduct Code” information presented within the organizer and talk
about it with your child at an age appropriate level. Your support in this important matter is
appreciated.
Early Release Day
Our Board has recognized the need to provide on-going professional development to our staff to
ensure continued student success. Part of the P.D. program will involve an Early Release Day to be

on that afternoon.

Students and Medication Please inform the school of any serious allergies (asthma, bee stings, peanut, nuts, milk and
medications, etc.) or any serious health concerns that require medication. The District School
Board of Niagara requires that you complete an “Emergency Action Plan and Physician’s
Authorization” in order for medication, which must be signed by your child’s physician, to be given
at school. These forms may be obtained from the office. All medication must be in its original
container from the pharmacy. Medication should be brought to the office by an adult. All
medication must be kept at the office. Students who require an epi-pen or inhaler may have one
on themselves, however, a second epi-pen or inhaler must be kept at the office as well. The
classroom teacher must be notified of any such medication in the student’s possession.
School Council If you are interested in becoming more actively involved in your child’s education and the inner
workings of Crossroads Public School, we encourage you to join our School Council! A council
nomination form is available at the office.
This group meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. to discuss current issues,
educational trends, and the future of our school. We welcome new members!
Please consider joining us at our first meeting on Tuesday, September 20th from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m.
We will be electing our executive and establishing our general membership during this meeting.
Online Donations If you take a look at our school website crossroads.dsbn.org there is a “Support Your School”
button that allows people to make an online donation to the school using a credit card on a secure
site. Tax receipts are issued automatically, and the funds are transferred directly into our
charitable trust account. Supporting our school has never been easier!
Can you lend a hand? We are very fortunate to have many hard working and enthusiastic parents who have expressed a
willingness to work together with the Crossroads staff on a wide variety of projects including
fundraising, classroom help, gardening and special events. If you are able to lend your time
and talent to Crossroads, please visit the office. There are lots of ways to become involved.
Remember, “Many hands make light work!”

Food at our School: Working Together to Ensure a Safe
& Health School for our Kids
During our last school year, a number of parents brought forward concerns regarding both the
types of food being offered to children and the products brought in which potentially posed a
threat to children with severe allergic reactions.
Research shows that “health and education success are intertwined: schools cannot achieve their
primary mission of education if students are not healthy”2 and that “healthy eating patterns in
childhood and adolescence promote optimal childhood health, growth, and intellectual
development”.3
The school environment profoundly influences students’ attitudes, preferences, and behaviours.
Research also shows that when nutritionally inadequate food and beverages are available and
promoted at school every day, even along with healthier food and beverages, it becomes
increasingly difficult for students to have a healthy diet.4
We have a number of children that attend our school that suffer from a severe allergy which can
cause an anaphylactic reaction. An anaphylactic reaction is an allergic reaction so severe that in
some cases, it can be life threatening.
The safety of our children as well as the Ministry’s Healthy Foods Legislation help to guide
our decision-making when serving food at school. For this reason, we are asking for your
support in making several changes in how we approach bringing food into our school.
Due to the number and severity of life threatening nut allergies at our school, we ask that
all students bring nut-free snacks and lunches. Washing hands and faces before arriving at
school is an excellent precaution if children have had a nut product for breakfast.
Only food items that guaranteed to be nut free will be permitted in the school.
We have also had a lengthy discussion as a staff regarding both the use of food as reward
in class and class parties through the year, particularly the types of food items that are
brought into the school. We are committed to the following:
Teachers will no longer be handing out treats such as candy, freezies, etc. as positive
rewards. Instead, we will be using stickers and other special prizes.
Food for class parties will be following the Healthy Eating Guidelines and will no longer
include chips, cupcakes, candy or other unhealthy choices. Instead they will look for items
such as fruit & vegetable trays, yogurt, health baked chips & salsa, etc.
Only food items that guaranteed to be nut free will be permitted in the school.
Please be assured that we will continue to celebrate our students’ birthdays,
accomplishments, and special occasions in healthy and safe ways. We really appreciate your
understanding and support as we make this change.
