Helping Nepal -‐ ¥100,000 raised so far! Homerooms throughout the school have been talking and thinking about the action they might take in order to raise funds to support relief work in Nepal. Following a poll of the Grade 11 and 12 students, the Hungry Hideout has decided to donate ¥100,000: it’s an amazing start and a very real recognition of the extent of the support Nepal needs. The Hungry Hideout team is also planning a special ‘Support Ne-‐pal’ product in the run-‐up to the end of the school year, so be ready! Other fund raising ideas that have come up range from the EC class planning a Bake Sale, through a G4/5-‐organized ‘Crazy Hair Day’ one Friday, a ‘silent auction’ of Grade 2/3 artwork, a 100 Yen-‐style sale run by Grade 7/8…and so many more. On Monday the school leadership team will look at developing a program that enables each homeroom to take part in fundraising between now and the end of the semester, with the aim of sending all resulting funds to the relief efforts of the British and Lincoln Schools in Kathmandu as soon as the school year ends. Both of these international schools already have partnerships in the country and are committed to delivering all funds received to those in need. If any parent group would like to organise a fundraising activity please don’t hold back! Baker Books Order Baker Books catalogues were sent home last week: the deadline for receipt of forms or online form completion is this coming Monday, 25th May.

Grade 12 Graduation On Saturday, 30th May HIS will be holding the Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2015: this significant event will take place at the Mitsui Garden Hotel on Heiwa-‐dori from 4:30pm. All members of the HIS community are warmly invited to attend this celebration of the achievements of our Grade 12 students.
Parent Volunteers Needed for Washing Week! HIS is introducing a university transition activity called "Washing Week" (or "washing machine week") for Grade 12 students. The idea of this week is to make sure that students have the practical skills required before they transition to university. Some of our G12 students have indicat-‐ed an interest in these activities: however, we need parent volunteers as well as teachers to make this happen. HIS graduates or G12 siblings that are home from university are more than welcome to volunteer as well! Ideas for areas to tackle include: 1. Dirty Laundry: How to clean your clothes properly (field trips to the coin laundry welcome!) 2. Iron it Out: Ironing basics 3. Cooking: Beyond Cup Noodles 4. You're Missing a Button! Sewing Basics 5. Personal Finance Basics We would be interested in incorporating other activities from your experiences as a parent or university student that would be relevant to preparing students! We would like to target the week of 1st June or 8th June for these activities. If you are interested in volunteering for any of the activities above or would like to

suggest one of your own, please email Ms. Pechhold (jpechhold@hiroshima-‐is.ac.jp) as soon as possible with your area of interest and availability during the weeks of 1 June and 8 June. We anticipate this will be a fun experience for students and the parent volunteers. Plus, it is a great way to bond with G12 before they travel off to university! Spring Concert Last night saw another wonderful Spring Concert event: our EC students once again showed their music and movement skills and Karin, Ray, Teresa, Tatsuya and Shinjin performed their swansong ahead of next weekend’s Grade 12 Graduation. Inbetween these ages there was a wide-‐ranging repertoire of perfor-‐mances from across the school. Check out the school’s Facebook page for photos from the event.
Paw`s Heart Event @ HIS Last summer, many students participated in a bake sale charity event organised by Ms. B to raise aware-‐ness in our school community about shelter animals in Hiroshima. In conjunction with this connection made with the Paw’s Heart organisation, we are happy to announce that HIS will be hosting a trial outdoor event at school on Sunday 24th May 10:00 -‐ 3:00pm. Paw`s Heart Hiroshima Animal Protection Organisation will be leading this event and would love to meet people interested in finding out more about these animals or interested in fostering the shelter dogs in Hi-‐roshima City. The purpose of the event is both to spread the word about these abandoned and lost animals that need homes and to educate people about what happens when people fail to take responsibility for their pets. This charity collaborates with Hiroshima City Public Health Centre (Hiroshima-‐shi Hoken-‐jo) and they will be bringing along several dogs that currently reside at a shelter in town. If you would like to participate in this event, please come along between 10:00 -‐ 3:00pm to meet the organisers and some of the dogs from the shelter. Note to parents: Please ensure that you take responsibility for your children at this event and that you should be with them at all times. Students need to be vigilant, behave appropriately and ask before han-‐dling the dogs, as excitement or fear could result in accidents. The dogs joining the event are selected carefully: however, we urge all parents to ensure their children are kept safe during this event. We hope you can pop by to promote awareness for this cause.

Secondary School Exams Secondary school examinations will take place Monday-‐Thursday, 1st-‐4th June. These examinations are simply part of the assessment approach within the secondary school and make up only a part of the overall grade for Semester Two. Through last week the students received written guidance from each of their teachers about the examination in their subject. This guidance tells them what topics or units of work from across the year will be in the exam, so that the students can focus their revision on these units. There will also be review sessions in class in the week before the exams. As part of a planned approach to supporting our students learning how to manage and be successful in ex-‐aminations we phase in how much of the year’s material the students have to review and prepare: Grade 6 will be examined on approximately 30% of the year’s material and then this increases through the grade levels until Grades 11 is expected to be familiar with 100% of the material taught in the year. The Grade 10 examinations will cover something between 75% and 100% of the year’s materials and are set at a level equivalent to the IGCSEs formerly undertaken at the end of that year. At this meeting we hope to review the year briefly, share the financial report for 2014/15, and share the results of the surveys we sent out to the whole community, including all the students, asking for feedback about HIS Carnival, and how it compares with International Festival. We plan to conduct the election of the candidates for next year’s PTA Executive Committee, so hopefully all candidates will have approached the committee by then. It will be very difficult to run events without a leadership team in place, so we hope some of you are thinking about who you could enjoy working with as next year’s great team to keep up the good work and traditions of the school! We also hope to set aside some time for general discussion among the membership, and if you have anything you would like to add to the agenda, please let us know in advance and as soon as possible. As always, if you are unable to attend the meeting, but have anything you would like us to share there, please let us know in advance. Thanks for all your help this year!
SPORTS DAY POTLUCK Friday June 5th スポーツデイ ポトラックランチ 6 月 5 日金曜日 As we mentioned last week, we will be having a potluck table at lunchtime at Sports Day. If you prefer to eat your own lunch that is of course also fine, but if you feel like participat-‐ing, please bring a dish to share and put it on the table. No need to make enough for the whole school; we suggest that you bring enough food in total to satisfy your own family’s hunger. If everyone does this, we should all have plenty to eat.
