I could almost hear them thinking as they looked my way, “old men and children shouldn’t stand too close”. I was attending an event sponsored by one of our advertisers, SMF Cycles, at

their recent Customer Appreciation Day. The afternoon included two professional motorcycle stunt riders who absolutely fascinated the crowd with their ability to seemingly defy gravity, persuading those 500-pound bikes into riding positions almost unimaginable. I was impressed when one of them stood on the rear of the cycle - its front wheel toward the sky, and rode around in circles - hands outstretched as if riding a unicycle in a circus! But the pinnacle of my “flabbergastation” (the act of having been totally blown away)

was when the other guy did the same thing, but this time sitting backwards on the handlebars with the back wheel in the air! Cowabunga! I suppose they thought, as they looked at me while exiting the parking lot, “where did this guy leave his walking stick”? It would have been a waste of time to properly introduce myself to those young whippersnappers as “Joe Williams - dare-devil emeritus”!

So, I want to announce to a much younger gen-eration this fact: senior citizens once had a life, too. And perhaps an exciting one, at that. These now ripe, mature adults may have once played sports, danced, flown air planes, had parties, traveled the world, driven too fast, built busi-nesses and raised families. Too often, older per-sons are judged by the way they now look and not what they may have accomplished. Most folks have a story behind each Wrinkle. I raced an Austin Healey sports car for about 10 years. When my granddaughter told that fact to her grammar school classmate, J. J. Thomason, whose dad also raced, he responded, “that’s not true”. “How do you know”, said Anna “Just look at his face!” was his retort. Well, perhaps my few stories have not yet caught up with my numerous wrinkles.

My mother, “Miss Daisy”, (may she rest in peace) many times rode on her older brother’s shoul-ders as he piloted an old Harley motorcycle through the streets of Moreland and Newnan. She played high school basketball and was later on the Alta tennis team. Mr. Ed Wyrick of Sharpsburg, now in his ninety’s, showed me a photo of his early flying career wearing a leather flight helmet and goggles. My friend Dr Longo, 85, was once a prominent neurosurgeon. He walks a little slower now, but I have seen an early photo of Ralph standing on his hands! A rapidly aging woman may have been a beauty queen in her day. Some folks, now “rocking” their way through retirement, may have accomplished tremendous things, yet most of the younger generation is unaware.

Now, having recuperated from some health issues, (“neurological misfires”) I’m ready to get on with having a life again. But my activities will now be a little slower, a little safer, much wiser, and with a whole lot less “spit and vinegar”. I won’t be riding a motorcycle standing on the seat with no hands, (yes, I did that when I was young) or doing any competitive racing. And I probably should learn to walk in a straight line before continuing the flying lessons I started when I was 20. I may even pleas-ingly settle for helping my wife with her gardening so we can do more things together. I may not act like a young man anymore, and I certainly don’t look like one, but I intend to at least make a good showing when competing with the younger generation. I’ll just pull out my much tested and some-times successful method which states; “Old age and treachery will overcome youth and inexperience every time!”

The “Tin Can” Gang

Harold and Rosemary McCoy have always enjoyed camping with their two daughters and some close friends. But as they grew older, they realized their enthusiasm for “tent camping”was not what it once was. Perhaps it was time for a “pop up” or a travel trailer.

One of Rosemary’s co-workers had purchased and restored a vintage trailer and joined a group called “Sisters on the Fly”, giving her the opportunity to attend rallies around the country, camping and displaying her restora-tion. Rosemary was at once hooked on the idea and she and Harold began looking for a possible restoration project of their own. ey began by studying web sites showing trailers for sale as well as owner forums, including an interesting facebook site called tincantourists.com. e campers o ered for sale where liter-ally all over the country, but when they looked at one in Loganville, Ga, they decided it might meet their needs. “ e camper de nitely need some work and TLC”, Harold reported, “but it appeared to be sound”. A er striking a deal with the seller, the McCoys found themselves the proud owners of a 1974 Serro Scotty High-lander, manufactured in Ashburn, Georgia 40 years ago.

One of the biggest adventures of this project was the journey home, accompanied by their close friends Chris Hobbs and Stan Munson. As the decades-old tires where dry-rotted, they had to pull the trailer on the back roads. “We held our breath, stayed under 45, and prayed that the tires wouldn’t blow before we made it

home”, confessed Rosemary. ankfully they ar-rived in Newnan with no major problems.

A er searching web sites for ideas and parts, and waiting for the winter to break, the project was started in mid-February with an ambi-tious goal of nishing the trailer, making their maiden voyage by spring break in April. e rst part of the project was just plain old grunt work – removing wheels and windows, exterior trim and accessories. And they took out the old broken light xtures, the refrigerator, dining table and the toilet. en the interior paneling had to be ripped out, having rotted from years of water leaks. e McCoys admitted that this was one of the most depressing parts of the job as they continued to nd more deterioration as they went along. But nally, everything was stabilized and solid.

Re-doing the exterior was a challenge as years of mildew, old caulk, rusted and bent trim and hubcaps had to be removed. But one of the most exciting parts of the restoration was the new paint job, mostly done by Mr. Joe and Ms. Ann Hobbs. “It was beautiful when they nished, and I don’t think Rembrandt himself could have done a better job!” e inside was put back together with new paneling, benches for the dining table, and the bed area was rebuilt. ey also installed a refrigerator, micro-wave and toilet, as well as all new wiring and light xtures.

ey nally got to the point Rosemary had been looking forward to … the decorating of

the interior! She started with a fresh coat of paint throughout, including the repainting of the stove and sink. She made new cushions for the dining benches, a quilt for the bed, and curtains for the windows. And Rosemary added the nishing touches by decorating with various time period pieces, handed down from fam-ily members and purchased at various antique stores, ea markets and on line sites. “With a last minute push, we made our goal of nishing everything by spring break!”

Wanting to stay close to home in case of any unforeseen complication, they made their rst trip to Holiday Park on West Point Lake. ere were none and the camper worked beau-tifully!

“We are very pleased with the way the camper turned out”, said Harold. “ ere were a lot of friends and family helping us along the way, each making a huge contribution to the nished product, and we are forever grateful to them all. And it was great getting to hang out and spend time with our close friends during this fun restoration project”. Now the McCoys can look forward to seeing many di erent places while having an actual bed to sleep in and no more sore bodies in the morning waking up from a de ated air mattress. Harold and Rosemary McCoy can forever enjoy the fun and interest-ing memories of their membership in the “Tin Can Gang”.

3 Mistakes To Avoid When Selling Your HousePricing Too High1.

Not Making e House 2. Available To Show

Placing On Market Before 3. It’s Ready.

Let’s take these one at a time.

1Pricing Too High - You would think that this would be common

sense for most sellers, however we all want the most that we can get for our homes and can be quite touchy about how to price for the market. Listen to your agent. Get a competitive mar-ket analysis from them and see how your house compares to others on the market and recent sales. Also, keep in mind that you aren’t going to get back in return every dollar you have invest-ed in updating and maintaining but it will increase your chances of obtain-ing a good fast o er.

2Not Making House Available to Show – is happens more that

you would think. Many sellers want to sell their house but don’t want to be

Nan Johnston, Southern Staging & Redesign,

nan@southern-staging.com www.southern-staging.com

inconvenienced by the interruptions in their daily lives that showing and inspections require. It boils down to this … do you really want to sell it? If so, then make it available to view. If it’s not convenient to make it available for viewing, then wait until it is before placing on the market or go ahead and move out so it can be shown when buyers are looking.

3Placing On e Market Before It’s Ready – As a home staging

consultant, I regularly receive calls from home sellers that have been on the market for 1 month or so, had lots of showings and no o ers. As part of the consultation, it is my job to gure out the disconnect between seeing the photos online and the buyer walk-ing through the front door. is usu-ally happens because either the house needs work, the furniture and acces-sories are too personal or dated in appearance, an odor from last night’s dinner or the dogs barking and going crazy. More than once I’ve had a seller respond that they wish they had the information gathered at the consulta-

tion before they placed house on the market.

Remember this, if you don’t remem-ber anything else about this article…your best opportunity for obtaining a contract on your property is during the 1st 30 days of going on market. If you’ve over priced, made it inconve-nient to see or not prepared properly prior to listing, you are going to su er the consequences.

If you need information about pre-paring and showcasing your house to sell, give us a call and let’s set some-thing up.
