THE COTTAGE GARDEN SOCIETY Members’ seed distribution 2010-2011
Keep this seed list - you will need it again if you order seed!
Please read these notes carefully before ordering.
NB. We can only send seed to members of the Society living in the UK &the EU, as strict import regulations apply and health certificates arerequired elsewhere.
❁ Closing Date: You can send in your order as soon as you receive thisseed list. All orders MUST be received by 16th January 2011. Orders areprocessed over 2 weeks or so, and sent out daily, so your seed will notarrive before mid February. To get them to you any earlier, our volunteerswould have to work through Christmas and New Year! All orders will beprocessed in date order of receipt, but donors will have priority.
❁ Allocation: All members are entitled to 12 packets of seed. You mayorder three extra choices from the ‘EXTRA’ list at the end of the mainlist - see p24. Joint members may have an additional 5 packets. Donors ofmore than five varieties of seed can claim an additional 8 packets, andtheir orders will receive priority attention.
❁ Handling charge: The handling charge is now £4.00 per order(UK), and £4.50 (EU). A cheque or postal order for the correct amount, made payable to the Cottage Garden Society, must be enclosed with yourorder. Please note that we are unable to accept Eurocheques due tobankers’ charges.
❁ Seed Varieties: Each variety of seed listed has a number. ONLYTHIS NUMBER will appear on the seed packet, NOT the plant name.So KEEP your seed list as you will need it when your seeds arrive. (We donot have many spare copies.) Keep a note of what you ordered, so thatyou have a list of the seed numbers requested, and the names.
HOW TO ORDER: Seeds are ordered by number only, not name. Your1st choice column MUST be completed in numerical order, ie in theorder given in the seed list. This also applies to the Donors, JointMembers and Extras columns. Any orders received which are NOT innumerical order will held back until the other orders are fulfilled, as thepackets are filed in numerical order. Orders which are incomplete, haveincorrect payment or are sent to the wrong address may be delayed.

Detailed instructions and order form can be found at the end of this book-let. Please include with your order a CLEARLY self-addressedadhesive label, not an envelope.
❁ Alternative Choices: Do remember to give substitutes in case yourfirst choice is not available. These can be listed in order of preference. Ifwe cannot provide your first choices, or preferred substitutes, we make upyour entitlement by random selection - providing we have enough seed. Soif you give a good list of substitutes it enables us to send something youreally want. Some varieties are in short supply - and often those are theones in most demand.
Please remember that the seeds listed have been donated by members fromtheir own gardens, and thus will have been open-pollinated. This meansthat it is possible for nearly all of them to be cross-fertilised, though manygenera rarely do hybridise. Named cultivars and hybrids, even if not cross-fertilised, are unlikely to ‘come true’ and their offspring should not be giventhe cultivar name, but in most cases, where cross-fertilisation has not takenplace, a proportion of the seedlings will resemble the parent.
Since the seed is donated, the Society cannot in any case guarantee that itis correctly named. All Society seed lists have an element of chance inthem; that is part of the fun - so good luck with your selection! Do notdiscard this list, you will need it again to identify your seed packetswhen they arrive!
INFORMATION ABOUT THE SEED LIST
This list was compiled and checked to the best of my ability using the TheRHS Plant Finder and other works of reference, and the internet. Thosenames I was unable to verify I have marked * with an asterisk. This doesnot mean that they do not exist, but that I was unable to find them.Theremay be a further opportunity to obtain seed (in March) after the main dis-tribution. This will be a random selection of leftover seed, only identifiableby the seed list number and not by name. So your seed list will be essentialif you wish to apply for seed!
We are very grateful to all the donors who provided seed, to members ofthe Cheshire Group who helped to pack the seed, and to members of theGloucestershire (Severnside) Group, who undertook the distribution again.I am also personally very grateful to those many kind members whoincluded a cheque in sponsorship of my towpath walk with their seeds.Margaret Mason

ORDERING INSTRUCTIONSPLEASE READ FIRST
Due to international legislation, only members of The Cottage GardenSociety in the UK, the EU or Canada may order seed.
Complete the form on the next page, and send it, with a self-addressedadhesive label, and the correct payment, to: Rob Baston, Middleoak,Kinnersley, Worcestershire WR8 9JR by 16th JANUARY 2011.Orders received after this date will be too late!
1.There is a change this year in that in addition to your first, donors’ andjoint members’ (as applicable) choices, you may order three extrachoices from the ‘EXTRA’ list at the end of the main list. These itemsare those which may have low germination rates due to age or for otherreasons, and there are no guarantees; also no substitutes - when they’regone, they’re gone.
2.List the seeds you would like in numerical order in the 1st choicecolumn. The donors’, joint members’ and extra columns mustalso be in numerical order (requests not in numerical order are filledlast). In the substitutes column, list seeds in order of preference. Ifyou do not give alternatives in case your first choices are not available, you may not receive the full number of packets if seed runs out.
3.Please include a self-addressed adhesive label, NOT an envelope.
4.Include your cheque/ postal order for £4.00, made out to TheCottage Garden Society and signed! The charge is the equivalent of£4.50 in EU and Canada. ALL payments should be made in sterling, sterling cheque, or Euros - we cannot accept other cheques due tobank charges.
5.Send in your order before the closing date - 16th January 2011.
6.Please do not include subscriptions, changes of address, book orders oranything else with your seed order! These can only be handled by ourAdministrator, Clive Lane. (His address is in every magazine.)
Enquiries about the Seed Distribution only may be made to Rob Baston(as above) or Tel: 01905 371385.
