KATE KIRK ANDCHARLES COTTON

We are delighted to introduce an exciting new book from Kate Kirk

and Charles Cotton, the authors of the very successful The Cambridge

Phenomenon: 50 Years of Innovation and Enterprise. Their first book

described in vivid detail the history of the Cambridge UK technology

cluster since the 1960s. This time, they will be exploring the many ways

in which Cambridge technologies, Cambridge companies and Cambridge

entrepreneurs have improved the lives of people around the world.

Computing, drugs, inkjet printing, semiconductors, software, technology

consulting, telecommunications, and many more; the extraordinary range

of Cambridge achievements is often lost to public view because so much of

what comes out of Cambridge goes into helping other businesses succeed.

The Cambridge Phenomenon: Global Impact will put Cambridge’s

contribution into perspective, looking at different industry sectors and

also the individuals whose technology breakthroughs have inspired new

products, services and business models.

Once again, the team has assembled a stellar cast for its Advisory

Board, including representatives of some of Cambridge’s most successful

companies, academics whose ground-breaking research has become the

foundation of entrepreneurial success, and some of Cambridge’s best-

known entrepreneurs themselves.

Professor Sir Leszek Lord Alec Broers Sir Michael Marshall Hermann Hauser KBE

Borysiewicz

With Foreword by Martin Rees and Preface by David Sainsbury

The Cambridge Phenomenon: Global Impact takes a multi-faceted

approach that allows the authors to examine not just particular product and

service concepts that have emerged from Cambridge, but also the technology

sectors and business model innovations that have been behind some of

Cambridge’s biggest successes. They explore how the thriving entrepreneurial

ecosystem has led to more than 25 of the largest corporations in the world –

such as Amazon, AstraZeneca, Genzyme (a Sanofi company), Microsoft and

Qualcomm – establishing operations in Cambridge to tap into the magic. They

also discuss the less tangible factors that make the Cambridge cluster tick.

“We hope to be first and alone in Cambridge for a period of time to

access all the science that’s there.

– Pascal Soriot, CEO, AstraZeneca, The Times, 20 January 2015

By examining the different ways in which Cambridge companies have

succeeded internationally, the authors throw light on the unique and enduring

qualities that make the Cambridge Phenomenon so special.

“The phenomenon of Cambridge, its university and its cluster, is an inspiring reminder of

the great power of human ingenuity to create new enterprises and industries, to make life

better and more productive for all of us.

— Bill Gates, Foreword, The Cambridge Phenomenon: 50 Years of Innovation and Enterprise

Since its publication in 2012, The

Cambridge Phenomenon: 50 years of

Innovation and Enterprise has found

its way onto desks in Beijing, Berlin,

Delhi, Helsinki, Moscow, Rio de

Janeiro, Riyadh, Sidney, Silicon

Valley, Singapore, Tel Aviv, the

UAE and Washington, DC. The

book would not have been possible without the

generous support of a core group of Cambridge companies, and their faith

in the project demonstrated the typical Cambridge willingness to take on

board a totally new idea on board and run with it.

What they said about The Cambridge Phenomenon:

50 Years of Innovation and Enterprise

“Charles and Kate did a wonderful job in creating this

elegant, wide-ranging and informative book. The end result

is a testament to the entrepreneurial zeal of the people

and companies whose stories make up the history of the

Cambridge Phenomenon. We were delighted to be part of

this project.

– Warren East, former CEO, ARM

“This is a fantastic book, and has proved a great way to

showcase RealVNC’s remarkable story to our colleagues and

customers.

– Andy Harter, Founder and CEO, RealVNC

“This book marks an important milestone in the growth of the

Cambridge technology cluster – it is a unique book telling a

unique story, there is nothing else quite like it.

– Hermann Hauser KBE, Co-founder Amadeus Capital Partners

The Cambridge Phenomenon: Global Impact, with its emphasis

on what Cambridge means to the world at large, will be a unique

marketing tool for companies looking to underscore their presence in this

internationally renowned technology cluster.

What they’re saying about The Cambridge Phenomenon:

Global Impact

“It was great to read the history of the Cambridge cluster in the

first book – but understanding what the Cambridge cluster has

done – and is doing – on the world stage is another story, one

that needs to be told.

– David Roux, Founder of Silver Lake Partners

“We’re always looking at Cambridge, for new ideas, new

companies, new research – there’s a lot happening and we

want to be there.

– Giuseppe Zocco and Francesco de Rubertis of Index Ventures

“So much of what comes out of Cambridge is hidden – the chips

in your phone, the software that allows you to operate remotely,

the technology behind the biggest-selling drug in the world – for

anyone interested in entrepreneurship, it is crucial to understand

the role of the Cambridge cluster in the global arena.

– Frank Bonsal, Co-founder of New Enterprise Associates

and Red Abbey Venture Partners
