This year is the
150th birthday of
United Methodist
Women,
celebrated by over
800,000 women
around the globe. For those 150 years, UMW has
continued the tradition established by our
foremothers by stepping out boldly whenever
necessary to carry out God’s will and provide
strength and support to women, children and
youth throughout the world.
United Methodist Women remembers women
who were bold even when it required taking risks
to their traditions, their reputations, and even their
very lives; women in Scripture like Esther, Abigail,
the woman at the well, and of course Mary;
women of our past like Suzanna Wesley, Isabella
Thoburn (from Ohio) and Dr. Clara Swain; and
women of our present time such as Mother
Theresa, Rosa Parks, and Malala Yousafsai.
We celebrate the United Methodist Women of
today who are working at home and abroad to
transform the future for women, children and
youth by sharing the love of Jesus Christ.
Today’s UMW continues to boldly stand on the
frontlines fighting for causes like maternal health
and infant mortality; battling against human
trafficking, inequality and many other injustices
both here at home and abroad. The many
emphases are all geared toward the benefit of
women, children and youth. Our causes strive to
improve their living conditions, provide relief from
hunger and to show them they are worthy and
loved by God. In the United States, UMW supports
nearly 100 mission institutions (five in Ohio, two in
Northeast Ohio) with ministries that alleviate
suffering and injustice in their communities. All of
these ministries are supported by the work and
monetary pledges of the members of local units
such as Oak Chapel.

Climate Justice Speaker
Saturday, May 18 at 10:30 a.m.
Our speaker will be Jessica Stonecypher from
Zanesville, who will talk about climate justice.
Deacon Jessica is a young, enthusiastic
environmentalist who is eager to share her insights
and ideas with our church. Climate justice is a hot
topic these days, but what does it mean for people
of faith? Jessica will share her Christian perspective
on environmental work. Her book, Embracing
Wholeness: An Earth Perspective for Covenantal
Living was featured as the 2018 Mission u
Spirituality Study. Come ready to engage in
spiritually reflective activities that will guide us in a
deeper relationship with the creation and equip us
to be more intentional in our earth-keeping
work. All are invited to attend.
Weekday Bible Studies
The Monday morning Bible Study
is studying “The New Testament
You Never Knew” by N.T. Wright
and Michael Bird. This eight-week
study is designed to help discover
that there is more in the New Testament than you
ever imagined. Our next study will be “Abraham
Father of All Believers” by Stephen Binz. This Bible
Study uses Lectio Divina, an ancient way of
studying scripture in today's world. We will begin
the new study on May 6. Please consider joining
this group that meets each Monday morning at
9:30 a.m. in the room across from the office.
Spiritual
Growth
The Membership Care
Committee will be working on
having a new Church Directory
printed. Details to follow! Your
cooperation and presence will be
much appreciated!
The Committee has a list of homebound
members who are visited by one of the
committee members on a regular basis.
Please contact Christy Rickard, 330-264-3830
with any member needs.
Cheryl Rastetter continues to coordinate
getting meals to those members of our church
who have been ill or in the hospital. If this is an
area where you could help, such as cooking or
delivering, please call Cheryl at 330-262-9369.
We look forward to caring for our church
members with a caring and compassionate
attitude looking to God for guidance.
Blood pressure screenings are still being offered
after worship on the third Sunday of the month.
Please see Christy Rickard if you have a request
for speaker topics that would be of interest.
People to People
On the first Sunday of the month, please
remember to bring in non-perishable
items to support those in need in our area
through the People to People Ministries. Our
collection each month, which coordinates with the
celebration of our Lord’s Supper, is an opportunity
for you to share in the blessings God has given you
with those in need. Many Thanks to Connie Reed
for delivering these gifts to People to People.
Around the world, girls and
women resort to using rags,
mattress stuffing, banana leaves,
feathers, and even cow dung to
manage their menstruation. Days
for Girls provides a safe,
beautiful, washable, and long-lasting alternative,
along with vital health education. Oak Chapel in
partnership with Apple Creek UMW is now an
official Days for Girls Team. We will be sewing
shields, liners and bags on the second and fourth
Tuesdays of the month. We will meet in May
then take the summer months off and resume
this ministry after the Wayne County Fair. All are
welcome to come anytime during the 4-8 p.m.
meeting time to help or just to show your
support. We will be collecting hotel size soaps to
go in each kit. So the next time you travel, save
the soaps as a way to support this ministry.
Coming along side other women in mission
offers various mission opportunities, especially
those relating to women, children, & youth. You
will be encouraged to grow in faith &
spirituality; asked to expand your knowledge on
social & geographical concerns; invited to join in
fellowship with other women; and maybe
become better able to discern God’s particular
call for you! UMW might be the place for you!
Ashland University Choir will
kick off their Spring tour with
an evening performance at Oak
Chapel. Come join us on Monday, May 6 at
7:30 p.m. to hear a talented group of singers
directed by Dr. Rowland Blackey, joined by
University Organist Dr. Timothy Guenther. Both
Pastor Kyle and Courtney sang in this choir
during their time at Ashland University, and they
always enjoyed singing at the churches that
hosted them in the evenings. There's usually a
mix of sacred and secular music, so there’s
plenty to enjoy from this very talented group!
Invite your family and friends!
Children, do what your parents tell you. This is
only right. "Honor your father and mother" is
the first commandment that has a promise
attached to it, namely, "so you will live well
and have a long life."

Sunscreen Is Your Friend
It is that time of year to dig out the sunscreen
to protect your skin from sun damage.
Wearing sunscreen, staying out of the sun, and
wearing protective clothing/hats are ways to
prevent sun damage.
Avoiding sun exposure during the hours of
10 a.m. and 3 p.m. is best, as this is the time
of day that the UV rays are the strongest.
Doctors believe that avoiding sun damage or
sunburn will prevent most skin cancers.
Sunscreen with SPF of at least 30 is
recommended. SPF45 or higher should be used
if you have fair skin.
Sunscreen needs to be applied 20 to 30
minutes prior to sun exposure and then every
two hours when you are in the sun.
Don’t skimp on the sunscreen! Apply a
generous layer and smooth it on rather than
rubbing it in.
Always carry sunscreen with you and don’t
forget to put it on!

Annual Community Impact Day
Saturday, June 8
The next Outreach Committee planned
event will be on Saturday, June 8. Once again
we will pack UMCOR Hygiene Kits and work
with Habitat for Humanity. Our third project
will be to pack meals with Lifeline Ministries to
send to Liberia once again. Last year we were
able to collect $500 which allowed us to send
2500 meals to Liberia. Elizabeth Feldman was
able to witness first-hand how desperately those
meals are needed in a village near where she
was working. This year we would love to
surpass that goal of $500 and also involve more
members of the congregation in the meal
packing event. So mark your calendar and plan
to attend the Community Impact Day on June 8.
The remainder of our efforts, as a
committee, will be to support individuals or
groups in the congregation as they reach out to
others in our community and beyond. If you or
your committee has an outreach project you
would like help with please contact Pam Domer,
Outreach Committee Chair and we will be glad
to help.
Can you hear the music, the sweet sound of
female harmony? Can you see the laughter, the
joy of being together? Can you feel the love,
the community of sharing?
UMW: All women welcome.
