NAPLAN On Monday, 2018 NAPLAN results were sent home with Years 3 and 5 students in envelopes for parents. If you wish to discuss your child’s results please make a time to meet with their class teacher. Unfortunately we have not yet been able to access overall school results but these should be released this week. If so, I will be able to provide some detail in regard to these in next week’s newsletter and will also provide an overview of the results at one of the Term 4 P & C meetings. Information on our performance is also included each year in the Annual School Report. Battle of the Primary Schools Well done to our dance groups who recently competed at the ‘Battle of the Primary Schools’ event. Our Junior Dance Group gained first place in their division, our Senior Dance Group was awarded Highly Commended and, in their first public performance, our Boys Dance Group placed third in their division. These are fantastic results! Well done to all of our dance program students and to Ms Moore and Ms Tilney who devote so much time and effort to these groups. Mrs Meyer Some of you may be aware that one of our wonderful School Learning Support Officers, Ms Meyer, has been studying part-time for a teaching degree whilst working at our school. We are very excited to report that, following her recent final practicum teaching placement, Ms Meyer is now able to undertake casual teaching employment and understandably wants to commence doing so as soon as possible. As such, we sadly farewell Ms Meyer from her current role at our school at the end of this term but we are sure to see her back next term in a casual teaching capacity. We thank Ms Meyer for her extensive contribution to Normanhurst PS over the past nine years and wish her all the best with the new phase of her career. ‘Dancing through the Decades’ School Concert The students have been rehearsing for our school concert throughout the term in their ‘Dance2BFit’ lessons and with their class teachers, and are looking forward to performing at the matinee and evening sessions next Tuesday. Thank you to all families who have purchased tickets to attend. It is a big feat to plan a concert where every single student has the opportunity to perform and the Concert Committee of Ms Veldon, Ms Grimmond, Ms Mafi, Ms Moore, Ms De Palo and Ms Patel has done a great job coordinating it. Child Safety Handbook The Child Safety Handbook is a resource to assist parents and carers on a range of topics essential to child safety. The 2018 handbook is available in digital format and includes important updated content provided by: NSW Ministry of Health, NSW Police Force, Fire and Rescue NSW, NSW RFS, Transport for NSW, Sydney Trains, NSW Department of Family & Community Services, eSafety Commissioner and NSW Office of the Children's Guardian. It can be accessed via the link: http://nsw.childsafetyhub.com.au/downloads/.

Summer Uniforms Please be reminded that when we have an unseasonably warm day, students are able to wear their summer uniform prior to our official changeover at the start of next term. Shorts Option for Girls Uniform As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, as part of the new Department of Education Uniform Policy, all schools will be required to provide an option for girls to wear pants (Winter) or shorts (Summer). We already have a pants option for Winter. We have also previously had a shorts option for Summer but the Uniform Shop no longer uses this supplier and the style was not a popular option. Leigh Hudson has kindly sourced new options for shorts and she presented these at the P & C meeting last week. We are now seeking input from staff, students and parents to determine with which option we will proceed. This week each family has received a survey to indicate their preferred option. Please complete this survey and return it by next Thursday 27 September if you are keen to offer input. As we are hoping to have the shorts available for this Summer, we are only able to consider input received by this date. Samples of each option pictured on the survey are also available for viewing in the Administration Office during the survey period. Positive Behaviour for Learning During this fortnight all classes are revising expectations for the canteen and how our three school values apply in this setting. Kind regards, Amber Gorrell Principal ________________________________________________________________________________________
Kindergarten’s First Excursion On Friday 14 September the Kindergarten students of KT, KR and K/1V participated in their very first excursion to the Field of Mars Environmental Educational Centre. They could barely contain their excitement as they prepared to take part in the Special Places program. At the centre we were greeted at the gate by some of the local wildlife. The students then immersed themselves in learning all about how our natural environments are special places. Using their five senses the students experienced the scents of our native plants, observed the natural environment and listened to the sounds of the bush. Using maps the students explored and navigated their way along bush trails and through the local landscape. They listened to Indigenous stories and did some craft using natural resources. A particular highlight was when the students got to hone their engineering skills by building stick shelters. A special thank you needs to go out to all of the amazing parent helpers who volunteered their time to accompany us on our excursion. Your assistance on the day was greatly appreciated and definitely supported the smooth and safe running of all learning activities. Dance News On Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 September our Junior, Senior and Boys’ Dance Groups competed in The Battle of the Primary Schools Eisteddfod held at Marsden High School. The Junior Dance Group performed in the Stage 2 section with 10 competitors and were successfully awarded first place with a score of 98/100 for their performance of Footloose. The Senior Dance Group performed in the Stage 3 section with 13 competitors and were successfully awarded highly commended (fourth) with a score of 95/100 for their performance of The Greatest Show. The Boys’ Dance Group performed for the very first time in the Hip Hop section with 5 competitors and were successfully awarded third place with a score of 92/100 for their performance of Ghostbusters. This is an absolutely fantastic result for our talented dancers with all groups performing exceptionally well and placing in their sections. We are very proud of our students and delighted to share the success with the rest of Normanhurst PS. Thank you to Ms Gorrell for supporting our participation in this event and to all the fabulous dance parents for your constant support and encouragement. Operation Art
Throughout the year we offer our students the opportunity to enter a number of different ART Competitions. One of our recent competitions was OPERATION ART - an initiative of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in association with the New South Wales Department of Education. The Operation Art program provides a forum for students to demonstrate their visual arts achievements through exhibitions at the Armory Gallery, Sydney Olympic Park. Please join us in congratulating: Ayam R, Sarah S-Y K, Amalie M, and Valentina P in having their artwork accepted for display at the Armory Gallery. Please also congratulate the many wonderful entries we had for this exciting ART opportunity – Scarlett H, Hailey W, Mimi X, Tom L, Xavier V E, Arjun C, Seth d S, Jennifer S, Zoe H, Annabella P, Lara A, Zoe P, Haile M. All students who participated will be congratulated and presented with a special participation certificate. School Concert This year our School Concert will be on 25 September 2018 with the matinee commencing at 12.00 p.m. and the evening concert commencing at 6.30 p.m. All the students are busy rehearsing and working hard on their performances ready to showcase their dancing talent for everyone next week. They can’t wait to show you! A concert organisation note went home earlier this week with the performance details. It is expected that all students will be at both performances. Teachers will be supervising students throughout the concert when in the holding rooms. Tickets are still available for the matinee only. Due to limited space in the school hall, families will only be allowed to purchase two tickets per show. How to purchase tickets – Please go to the below URL.

Smartboards
For several years now the P&C has supported the purchase and replacement of smartboards in classrooms throughout the school. Smartboards are viewed as important teaching tools by staff and students and like all technology (and especially that regularly in high use) they need replacement and updating. This year, through your generous donations and the hard work of our fundraisers, the P&C has contributed approx. $21 000 towards the purchase of new smartboards in five classrooms. We anticipate that smartboards will continue to make up a significant proportion of our expenditure each year into the future. If you are interested in helping to ensure that these resources are available for our children and their teachers into the future, please consider stepping up to help to organise or run a

fundraising event in the future – perhaps as the Fundraising Co-ordinator or a member of the Fundraising Subcommittee.
Shorts
At our P&C meeting last week Leigh H. presented a range of options for girls’ shorts which will be considered by the School and the community. The researching and collection of samples for these items has been the work of at least two years and I wanted to thank Leigh and her team for all the ‘behind the scenes’ work that has gone into sourcing a range of shorts for the School to consider.
Christmas Gift Charity
Each year for the past few years, I have suggested a charity which the P&C might support at our Christmas singing event. In the past, we have supported the Hornsby Women’s Shelter and I would be very happy to continue to do this, however, I also wondered whether this year we might consider a drought-relief charity and (to this end) wondered whether you would like to send me some suggestions ahead of the meeting in Week 3, Term 4.
In case you missed it…
This year, I have had the opportunity to work with an enthusiastic, dedicated and experienced committee. As I indicated last week, I will not be seeking re-election as P&C president next year. The following people have also indicated that they will not be standing for election to these roles for 2019: Scott Veale (Secretary and Vice President); Yemi Oluwi (Treasurer); Joe Maisano (Building Fund Coordinator); Leigh Hudson (Uniform Shop and Vice President); Ruth Archer (Canteen) and Kriena Thorp (Grounds Coordinator); Lisa Manton (Communications); Emma Veale (Fundraising Coordinator). On your behalf I would like to extend our gratitude to this great team! I hope to say more about each of them and their service to our school at our AGM.
New President
At the AGM in Term 4 I will come to the end of my year as President of the P&C and I will not be seeking re-election. If you would like to be considered for this role, please get in touch. Ideally, it would be good to indicate your intention to stand well ahead of the AGM. I am more than happy to chat with you.
