From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Week 8! What a very busy, busy term it’s been. I can
assure you that our classrooms having been buzzing with learning
activities and it’s a huge credit to our teachers who have kept students settled in their
learning this term with a strong focus on daily improvement. We are engaging our
students with rigorous learning opportunities that have been well planned by
teachers.
I would like to say a big thank you to our P&C Association who made possible the
purchase and distribution of the Father’s Day Gift Bags last week for our families. This
was an incredible effort under current circumstances and I know that their
coordination of this has been well appreciated by our families! I would also like to
acknowledge their efforts in keeping both the school canteen and uniform shop open
and available to families. We are very thankful for their close attention to abiding by
strict health guidelines in continuing operations.
Currently, we have commenced processes in delivering on the new department
reform driving school excellence across the state – School Excellence in Action (SEIA).
This process has involved very rigorous evaluative thinking processes this term to
establish how our school is performing, where we are at in relation to both internal
and external student data sets, and the implications for the new 2021-2024 School
Improvement Plan (SIP). I look forward to unpacking this with you next term and
seeking your input into future aspirations and innovations to be outlined in the
strategic Directions in the SIP.
Next term, our Senior School will be participating in the ‘Middle School’ program every
Friday. This continues to be an outstanding opportunity for preparing students for the
rigours of high school including rotating six times throughout the day into different
subject focuses with a different teacher. A big thank you to Mrs
Cullen and the Stage 3 teachers who make this program so highly
successful!

A reminder that our ‘Colour Run’ in Week 10 will continue with K-2 on Tuesday 22 September and our
Yrs. 3-6 students on Wednesday 23 September. Our Senior School students have been actively
publicising this event through the creation of posters, assembly reports and in class visits.
Lastly, we are commencing sourcing links with Cumberland Council and local businesses to establish a
new ‘bush regeneration’ program in our playground along the side fence corridor. The intention of the
‘Regenerating the Cumberland Plains’ project is to help sustain our native flora and fauna. This project
will also provide more shade and provide students with the opportunity to engage in further
understanding of the richness and diversity of our Cumberland area. If there are any families who can
add value or bring expertise to the project, I would welcome your thoughts and input.
Yours sincerely,
Mr Loughhead
(Principal)

Dear Parents and Carers,
New Online Enrolment System
We are excited to announce we will be rolling out the new Online Enrolment
System from Monday, 14 September 2020.
The Online Enrolment System is designed to provide flexibility for our parents to submit an enrolment
application online and at the time that best suits you. The application can be accessed on all browsers
and mobile devices including iOS and Android.
The online application process is currently restricted to:
Enrolments into local schools only
Children who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents
Children who live in NSW.
We offer our support and encourage you to complete your application to enrol online. If, however, you
do not feel comfortable completing an application online, a paper copy will be available for collection
from the front office or can be downloaded from the school’s website.
Further information about online enrolment can be found on the Department of Education website
https://education.nsw.gov.au/parents-and-carers/online-enrolment-for-nsw-public-schools
Tell Them From Me-Student Survey
I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a
Department of Education initiative: The Tell Them From Me student feedback survey, the second one,
for our students in Years 4-6. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic
achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing,
engagement and effective teaching practices. Both surveys are an important opportunity for our
students to voice what they are thinking as we can use this information to continue our journey of
excellence.
I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. It is conducted online and typically takes less than
30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 14 September and
23 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.
A consent form has been sent home with students in Years 4-6. If you do not want your child or children
to participate, please return the form to school by Thursday 10 September.
Thank you,
Mrs Zugna
Deputy Principal

Seven Steps to Writing competition
Stage 3 have some budding authors who participated in the Seven Steps Narrative Writing Competition
and we are very proud of the stories they produced. Each of the entries are extremely creative and very
well written. The students used lots of figurative language which was a huge focus in Stage 3 and of
course their narratives were written using all of the seven steps. These include: plan for success, sizzling
starts, tightening tension, dynamic dialogue, show, don't tell, ban the boring and exciting endings. All of
the narratives had me hooked from the very beginning! Check out their sizzling starts.
A Visit to the Past
“They ate biscuits with weevils in them! What even are weevils?” Lachie exclaimed, as he stared at an
information screen in front of the convict ship display. Like all of Kyle’s friends, he had been very
annoyed when he found out about the excursion to the museum. “History is boring,” Lachie had
groaned. Kyle struggled with most schoolwork, history included. He had thought the museum looked kind
of cool, but he would never say that to his friends.
“I think weevils are some sort of bug,” Kyle offered tentatively.
“Ewww! That’s so gross! Still, they deserved it. Convicts were criminals. Who cares about them,” Lachie
said as he turned his back on the display, motioning for Kyle to follow. Suddenly, the ground lurched
beneath Kyle’s feet. He thrust a hand out behind him, searching for something to steady himself with,
but found nothing. He stumbled, and nearly fell, regaining his balance at the last moment. Eyes closed,
he breathed in deeply and a foul smell assaulted his nostrils, he gagged as he identified it as vomit. The
noise of his classmates around him faded away, and was replaced by sick groans and faint murmuring.
He had the strange feeling that he was on a boat, which was swaying gently on the waves. That couldn’t
be possible! Kyle opened his eyes slowly and reeled with shock at the sight of the vast ocean before him.

A Visit to the Past As the moon shined as bright as an incandescent light bulb and soared high in the beautiful night sky, it
was peaceful and quiet. The night was soothing and calm, shining stars gently twinkled and the
occasional owl flew right past the lovely suburb of Mount Hill. However, the sweet serene sedate
situation broke as the sound of a skateboard rolling approached the railway station at the far end of
town. As the mysterious rolling sound halted, a teenage boy sprinted onto the railway and stood as still
as a statue. As he waited patiently on the long stretch of rail, a deafening honk of a train seemed to be
approaching the teenager. But curiously enough, it wasn’t an everyday train you see at the train station.
In fact, it was a self-propelled storage car and just before hitting the teenager, it came to a stop.
However, something unknown came out of the ominous car. A blinding flash of light radiated from the
car and out came a sleek, silver, shiny steam train.

Mistaken Identity “Hey, George wait up”! I yelled from across the hall. “Why didn’t you come to
my party last night”? I asked, puffed out from running.
“I was busy” He replied with his head down. He was acting shy which was
unusual. It was very strange for George to be quiet. He was usually bouncing
around with energy in the morning.
“Are you okay? You seem upset”? I asked. George kept his head down and
continued walking further ahead. He wanted nothing to do with me.

Mistaken Identity
Click Clack! Tin rollers putt along the hard rocky earth, as swiftly as a runaway
train. Kangaroos jump by and platypus dive into a cool murky river. Rough
hands seize me from behind, and in the distance, I hear the ringing of the
wake-up bell piercing through my dreams. “Anne, come on!” Mary yells
forcefully, as the bright rays of morning sun make my eyes tingle.

The Astonishing Bicycle Crisp, golden-brown autumn leaves fell peacefully, as the last rays of gleaming
shimmering sunlight danced playfully on the soft ends of the evergreen grass.
Amber wished it could stay that way forever. She found it the perfect scene to
tell her crush, Luka Cassidy, that she loved him. The grass let out shrill crunches
as she trudged through the needles with her boots. The thirteen-year-old was
so lost in thought that she didn’t realise she was taking the long way home to
Fauna Grove.

Roy Ringrose has visited
1H this week!
Roy Ringrose 1H
I had a great time visiting the 1H students, Mrs Holloway and Mrs Chen this the
week. I saw the students learning about so many interesting things!
This term I learnt that 1H have been learning how to write persuasives texts. I was so impressed with
the quality of their writing. They wrote many persuasive pieces of writing including that we shouldn’t
squish ants and that dogs make better pets than cats. Their writing was very persuasive! Have a look
at the photo of some of their Wow Work!
During Smiling Minds this week students learnt the skill of savouring. We got to practice mindfulness
while eating lots of yummy foods like strawberries and chocolate. It made us slow down and fully
pay attention to the experience of eating.
Math lessons were also fun filled this week! We learnt about length. We compared the length of
different objects in the classroom, measured things using cubes and even measured ourselves using
cubes!
I also got to see how talented the students are at drawing. As part of their health lesson we learnt
that we are all unique. So students drew self-portraits to show how we are all different. Some of the
self-portraits are in the office to check out.
On Friday I got to see the students participate in
development play. It was so much fun! Some of the
activities were conducting experiments about
instruments and exploring how to make sounds
louder and quieter, learning how to running a fruit
shop and post office and using puppets to learn
how to solve problems.
I was so impressed with 1H and how their all tried
their best this week! Thanks for having me visit
your class!
