Dear Willandra Community
…and the winner is…no-one as yet.
The rain gods did not help us out today. Thankfully, we managed to get the junior half of the
Athletics Carnival over and done with before the heavens opened up. For everyone’s safety, it was
decided to postpone the senior half of the carnival to a later date. Parents will be informed early
next week as to when the seniors will have their chance to complete their carnival.
This week has seen the students run, hop-step-and-jump, and work as a team to the best of their
abilities during both the faction jumps and carnival. It was great to see everyone representing their
factions with pride. Congratulations to you all. A big thank you to our P’n’C for the yummy food and
drinks that were on sale during the carnival. Also to Jonathon, from ‘Just Beans Coffee’, for keeping
the crowd supplied with the delicious hot drinks. Thank you to the staff who helped with the setting
up the athletics carnival today.
Last week started with our Book Week parade. Thank you to everyone who supported the event by
coming dressed as their favourite character. ‘Library by Lamplight’ was a huge success with the
junior classes being read to by our student councillors and parent volunteers. Mrs Starkey went all-out
in transforming the library into a variety of imaginary worlds for the students to immerse themselves in
whilst being read to. Thank you for your efforts, Mrs Starkey.
The students were entertained by Canning Vale College Circus last Wednesday.
Thank you to Miss Dagostino for organising the spectacular performance for us all. On Monday,
this week students learned about motorbike safety through Motosafe WA. It was well received by all.
TEDs birthday is just around the corner. We will be celebrating it on Tuesday the 10th September, with
a parent assembly starting at 9:20. Special guests for the event include; the Education Minister,
the Hon. Sue Ellery MLC, the Hon. Dr Tony Buti MLA, Mrs Keryl Caird (WAPPA) and the birthday TED
himself. Parents are invited to stay on, and enjoy an extended recess, with their child(ren) which will
go from 10:15 to 10:45.
As the Year 6 Camp is also just around the corner, I would like to extend a big thank you to our
community for their support of the sausage sizzle fundraising. Thanks to you, enough money was
raised to fulfil our goal of reducing the cost of the camp by $15 per student. The count-down has
begun.
At last week’s Parent Assembly, I brought to everyone’s attention that we have been experiencing
some unhygienic activity in our toilets throughout the school. Students have been climbing over the
doors to the cubicles and locking them, then climbing back over and leaving them locked to deny
others’ access. Students have then had to find other places to do their business. Toilet paper is
wasted in large quantities by students wetting it and then throwing it to stick on the ceiling. This is
happening in both the girls’ and boys’ toilets. The aim of some of the boys has a lot to be desired
too. It seems the toilet rolls are a much better target than the toilet itself. Parents, I ask you to discuss
with your child(ren) the importance to use our toilets safely and hygienically. Our cleaners are
getting quite concerned about the cleaning up of the messes, that I know would not be acceptable
at anyone’s home.

Mark Smith PRINCIPAL

Collection of Household Batteries for the School Battery Collection Program
Willandra Primary school is participating in the City of Armadale Battery Recycling Program.
This collection program is an important part of managing our waste and helping to reduce the negative
impacts of our waste on the environment.
To participate collect single-use batteries from your home when they have stopped working.
Simply reuse a plastic container like an ice-cream container or even a small box or reusable bag to bring
them to school in.
Take these to school and empty into the battery recycling collection buckets located in the Science
Room and the Library. You can re-use your collection container over and over.
Batteries collected in this program are recycled into new batteries, diverting them from landfill.
Batteries accepted through this program include:
The City of Armadale’s Waste Education Officer, Renae McLaughlin will be happy to help with any
