Friday 20th March—Harmony Day
Thursday 9th April—Sports Day and last day of Term 1
D IARY DATES
Next week our school recognises and celebrates Harmony Day, which this year falls on Saturday 21st March. Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity.
It is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
Harmony Day is a time for all Australians to remember and respect our diverse cultural backgrounds and to share what we have in common.
The central message of Harmony Day is that ‘everyone belongs’, this helps to remind us that it is important.
Harmony Day coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
During the week: Upper Primary cooking classes will be preparing some meals influenced from various cultures in our school and sharing with younger students.
On Friday, There will be an opportunity for students and staff to dress either in orange items which symbolises Harmony Day or traditional/cultural clothes. There will be an assembly that morning (we welcome parents/carers) to show as well as Rm 19 performing a Harmony song for sharing. There will also be fruit platters at recess In front of kitchen.
There will be a front office display called “The Languages we Speak in our Community’.
Some fast facts: Around 45% of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was. Apart from English, the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Italian, Arabic, Cantonese,
Greek, Vietnamese, Tagalog/Filipino, Spanish and Hindi. There are more than 60 indigenous languages spoken in Australia.
