DISCLAIMER: ALWAYS CHECK WITH SUPERVISOR BEFORE USING NEW TECH

Welcome!

• Purpose of seminar is to explore technologies, not to become an expert

• I’m not an expert, just someone who uses a variety of technologies to be productive

• Technologies have to fit

– the person(s)

– the challenges

– the constraints

Challenge: Accessing and Editing Documents - GoogleDocs

• + Edit on any computer

• + Always the latest version

• + Multiple people can edit at a time

• + Easily shared and exported to other formats (Word, pdf)

• - located on non-University servers

• - not good for archiving

• - not good for confidential documents

• - harder to format

GoogleDocs vs XFiles

Google Docs

• Collaborative editing from anywhere

• Anyone can be invited as long as they have an email address

• Quick to access

• Saves automatically

XFiles

• On university server

• Organized archives

• Documents can be shared with others

• Versioning handled through file naming

Challenge: Professional Networking

• Networking important for success in many fields

• Learn from others, contribute to conversations

• Solve novel challenges

• Keep up to date

Facebook vs LinkedIn

Facebook

• Huge (500 million users)

• Used by many people for many different purposes

• Easy to use, easy to reveal more than prudent/intended

• Often quicker to reach younger generation than through email

• Privacy settings and policies change frequently

LinkedIn

• 90 million users

• Generally used for professional networking

• Profiles are plainer, easier to show professional expertise and contributions

CHECK YOUR PRIVACY SETTINGS ON FACEBOOK FREQUENTLY

Challenge: Professional Networking

• LinkedIn Demo

Challenge: Real time updates

• UTHealth uses Twitter

• Sign up for Twitter and follow those you are interested in

• Many tweets contain links to more information, it’s just another way to get updated
