    Capital of Taiwan with more than 5 millioninhabitants for the metropolitan area, TaipeiCity started planning its metro network in the1970s, the construction in 1980s and pro-gressively the revenue services in 1990s.Nowadays, the 1st stage network is totallycompleted and put into revenue service. Thisfirst metro network of 69 km includes 6 linesand 64 stations, with a daily passenger flowof about 1 million.

    A 2nd stage network has been approved bythe Central Government and is now underconstruction. Including 7 lines and 57 sta-tions, the second stage will add up 70 km rail-

    ways. To this network will be integrated therail link between CKS International Airportand Taipei, and the Taipei Circle Line.

    In 1996, the first line of the Taipei metro network to be put into commercial operationis the Mucha Line (Brown Line), an elevatedMedium Capacity Transit system (VAL). As partof the 2nd stage network, the Neihu Line is anextension of the Mucha Line.The Neihu Line starts north from the existingelevated terminal station BR2. The line thengoes down into tunnel to the Sungshandomestic airport with BR1 station, it turnsnorth under the airport and Keelung Riverand re-emerges after B1 station. The NeihuLine continues east by viaducts crossing NeihuDistrict to reach the terminal and depot in Nankang. There a connection is made toNankang Line.The system definition, as well as the design ofthe civil works, track and depot have been carried out between 1999 and 2002. The cons-truction has started in 2003. The revenue service is scheduled to begin in June 2008.

    StationsThe Neihu Line includes 12 stations, of which2 are underground and 10 elevated. Added tothis is a maintenance depot.

    InfrastructureThe total length of Neihu Line is about 15 km,including 4 km under tunnel and 11 km onviaduct.

    The Project

    One of the key issues of this project is to mini-mize the mass of the structures, for a betterinsertion of the line in the dense urban areaand to reduce the environmental impacts.

    For the first time in Taiwan, the Departmentof Rapid Transit Systems (DORTS) have adop-ted the U Shape viaduct. This design wasdeveloped and proposed by SYSTRA as anoptimised solution to elevated metro systems.

    SuperstructureThe tracks consist of steel running surface.Neihu Line will be fully compatible with theexisting VAL system of Mucha Line, using rubber tired driverless AGT technology with aminimum headways of 72 seconds.

    SYSTRA has already been deeply involved inthe Mucha Line at the beginning of 1990s. Atthe time, SYSTRA carried out the coordinationbetween E&M systems and civil works andensured the training of operation and main-tenance staff of the line.

    Within the frame of Neihu Line, SYSTRA hastaken the role of Special Design Consultantfor the local designers, which are: China Engi-neering Consultants Inc. (CECI), ResourcesEngineering Services Inc. (RESI), Moh andAssociates (MAA), of the Department of RapidTransit System (DORTS) of Taipei MunicipalGovernment. SYSTRA performed the follo-wing services:

    System-wide assistance, including:- definition of the system-wide require-

    ments and interfaces between systems andcivil works,

    - power supply simulation of the wholeline,

    - noise & vibration studies and recommen-dations to mitigation solutions.

    Viaduct designCompared to the traditional box girder via-duct, the U Shape viaduct is an optimisedsolution to elevated metro systems, whichallows reducing significantly the visual impactto urban environment, as well as the cost-duration ratio.

    To improve the construction quality andspeed, the typical U shape spans as well asthe pier caps are fully pre-cast.

    Within this project, SYSTRA has performed:- basic and detail design of the typical sec-

    tions of U Shape viaducts,- architectural design of the typical U

    shape structures (superstructures and sub-structures),

    - design assistance for special bridges,- detail design review.

    Running surface design, including:- functional specifications,- basic Design.

    Depot design- general layout and basic design,- detail design review.
