Constructing robust Safety Assessments and comprehensive Safety Cases, which fulfil legal obligations as well as being cost-effective and time-efficient, can be challenging.
SYSTEM SAFETY ENGINEERING Managing and Integrating Safety Assessments and Safety Cases
A Competence Development Pathway
This Competence Pathway is aimed at Design Organisations, CAMOs, Continued Airworthiness Organisations and their regulatory authorities.
We often hear that safety is paramount – or that it has the highest priority. Safety is an emotive and subjective topic and many people want all risks eliminated at all costs. This is seldom possible. What is needed is a practical and consistent approach to target potential causes of harm and mitigate where the most benefit could be achieved. A balanced view must be taken in which safety does not dominate and prevent effective business, but in which safety is not ignored. A significant complicating factor is that many civil system designers use goal/failure based safety criteria for acceptable levels of technical failure probability, whilst operators utilise risk/accident based safety criteria in their Safety Management System (SMS). Contracting for safety therefore requires careful planning to integrate the safety deliverables from suppliers into systems and then into aircraft which need to be safely operated.
Our TR70 series of course modules draws on best practice from across the industry and aims to provide a basic skill-set for both safety practitioners and their managers by defining stakeholder (civil, military and legal) expectations and showing how these expectations can be efficiently accomplished and managed throughout the product lifecycle.
