Instructor:Dr.ZaneU.SegleOffice:Richardson202OfficeHours:TR:1400-1600Contact:953-7083,seglez1@citadel.edu CourseDescriptionandGoals:Thiscoursewasbuilttoprovidethestudentwithreal-life,socio-cultural,aswellasalanguagecontextwithinwhichtoadvanceconversationalcompetencyinthetargetlanguage.Throughoutthesemester,youwillbeexposedtolanguageskillsthatincludereading,writing,andspeakingcontextsthatwillincreaseyourabilitytocommunicatemorefluidly.WewillbeaddressingamyriadofissuesinSpanish,dealingwithsuchtopicsasidentity,memory,immigration,classstruggle,politics,socialproblems,andglobalizationintheSpanishworld.Thiscoursehopestoengagethestudentthroughacombinationoftexts,images,andlanguageinordertostimulatethestudent’ssensesandcognitivefaculties.Studentswillusethelanguageinameaningfulwayinordertodiscussthevariousculturalaspectsillustratedinourtextbook.Whiledevelopingproficiencyinlistening,speaking,reading,andwriting,myhopeistoexpandyourknowledgeoftheworldaroundyouaswellasdevelopasenseofself-awarenessasyoustrivetobecomemorelinguisticallycompetent.Asacrucialsteptowardfluency,thiscoursewillchallengeyourconversationalcomfortlevelinSpanishandincreaseyourconfidencenegotiatingtheSpanishlanguage.Expectations:

§ Participation–20%Sufficeittosaythatthiscoursewillrelyheavilyonstudentparticipation.Thisisaconversationcourseandthereforeitisimperativethatyoumakeeveryattemptpossibletospeakduringclass.Assuch,eachstudentwillbegivenadailyparticipationgradereflectingtheireffortsduringclass.

§ Attendance Ifyouarenotinclass,youcannotparticipate.Youwillbeallowedthreeabsences(excusedor unexcused)andparticipationpointswillbelostforeachsuccessivemissedclass.Forfurtherclass absences,officialCitadelpolicywillbefollowed:"Foranystudent,absences,whetherauthorizedor unauthorized,inexcessof20%ofthemeetingsofaparticularcoursecan,atthediscretionofthe professor,resultinagradeofFinthatcourse"(BulletinoftheCitadel).

§ ContentQuizzes/VocabularyQuizzes–30%

Quizzeswillbegiventodetermineyouunderstandingofthecoursecontentaswellasclassdiscussion.Therewillalsobevocabularyquizzesasthisisakeycomponenttolearningthelanguage.

§ Assignments–20%Therewillbevarioustypesofassignmentsgivenduringthecourse:Assignmentsdealingdirectlywiththetextandclassdiscussions,aswellgrammarassignments.Assignmentswillbecompletedasscheduledandnolateworkwillbeaccepted.

§ PresentationProject–15%Thestudentwillberequiredtogiveapresentationcoveringatopicfromthecoursematerial.Theprofessorwillprovideahandoutdetailingtheexpectationsoftheproject.Theprojectwillbepresentedduringtheclassandnostudentwillrepeatthesametopic.Thestudentshouldbethinkingaboutthisearlyintheclassinordertobeprepareadetailedandwell-developedpresentation.

§ OralandWrittenFinalExam–15%Therewillbeawrittenandoralcomponentofthefinalexam.Thewrittenportionoftheexamwillbegivenduringtheassignedfinalexamperiod(seecalendar).Theoralcomponentoftheexamwillbeconductedasaninterviewwiththeprofessorduringhisofficehoursthelastweekofclass.Ahandoutwillbeprovidedexplainingtheprofessor’sexpectationswithregardtotheoralinterview.
