Swimming: 101 Freestyle: There are no specific rules for this stroke except that some part of the body must touch the wall at each turn. Backstroke: Swimmers must remain on their backs until the final stroke leading into a turn in which the swimmer may roll onto their stomach and complete their turn. As they leave the wall, they must be on their back again. The flags hanging across the pool are designed to help the swimmers judge distance from the wall and to aid in their execution of their turn. Breaststroke: This stroke must be done with some part of the head above the surface of the water, except on starts and turns where the swimmers are allowed one kick and one pull under water. The leg kick must be a squeezing action with no downward thrust of the legs. The arm pull must be simultaneous. Butterfly: The leg kick must be a downward thrust done with both legs simultaneously. The arm pull must be done simultaneously and the arms must recover over the top of the water. The hand touch at turns and the finish must also be simultaneous. Individual Medley (IM): Each swimmer will swim two lengths each of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle in that order. The swimmer must finish on her back at the end of the backstroke leg and on her front for all other legs. Diving: In a dual meet, each diver completes 6 dives. Typically one of these dives is required while the other five are the diver’s choice. Relays: Relays consist of four swimmers competing for a joint time. Each swimmer, after the lead-off swimmer, must have contact with the starting platform when the preceding swimmer finishes her part of the relay. If any swimmer jumps in before the previous swimmer touches the wall, the entire relay is disqualified. The Start: Any swimmer who leaves before the horn sounds is charged with a false start and is disqualified. A swimmer may also be charged with a false start for not being motionless prior to the start. The race may continue following a false start with the disqualification taking place after the race. After the referee blows the whistle, spectators are reminded to remain quiet. A few facts about high school meets:
A meet is composed of 12 events, 8 individual swimming events, 1 individual diving event, and 3 relays. An athlete may enter a maximum of four events, no more than two of which may be individual events. The order of events is shown on the score sheet. Each team may enter a maximum of three swimmers per event and three relays per event. Points are awarded based on the order of finish.
Each team may score a maximum of 3 individuals and 2 relays in a particular event.

Daughter of Rick and Judy Blasen. Whitney is entering her fourth year on the swim team; she has also run track for two years. In addition to athletics, Whitney is active in orchestra, French club, key club and ballet. She is an honor roll student and a member of the National Honor Society. “For me, being on this team was one of the best parts of high school. We had so much fun and I’m sad that this is my last season, but I can’t wait to see what the future has to offer. My goals for the season are to improve my times, have fun, and not die while swimming the 200 IM. For college, I plan to go to the University of Iowa and major in pharmacy. After college, I am going to develop a cure for cancer and take over the pharmacy markets (that might not happen, but I can always hope).“
Daughter of Mark and Sara Burns. Ellie returns for her fourth year of swimming. Ellie is also involved in Speech, where she has received 3 all-state nominations, mock trial, and math contests. She is a member of NHS (secretary), her class valedictorian, and a National AP Scholar. “This season I hope to continue to drop time and have fun. I want to become an elementary teacher. I enjoy the bus rides and team dinners (YUM)! I’ve enjoyed spending time with all the girls, especially the JV! I don’t want to leave but sadly I have to. I will come back and visit my JV girls! My advice is: girls, not matter what, keep your heads up! You’re beautiful! The JV girls should know my quote, ‘Shark Bait, HU HA HA!’ Let’s go Rams! I plan on moving away from Iowa in the future and hopefully travelling as much as I can. I also want to thank my fellow throwers—you’re awesome—and also all the people I’ve met at swimming over the past 3 years!”

My goals for this season are to drop a lot of time in all of my events, especially my 100 fly. I plan on going to NICC for two years to do my general eds then transfer to a different college when I figure out what I want to do. After college I plan to do something with special needs kids. My quote is do your best and never give up because if you give up you will never get anywhere.

She is a member of French club, sells tickets for plays, is on Renaissance and NHS. “I enjoy swimming, even after 3 years. I also love photography and am going into my third year with the class. I may or may not go to school for photography in the future. My goals for this season are to improve my times all around, to continue not dying while swimming the butterfly, and to win the city meet this year. Also, to not break any more caps or goggles because of my hair. In the near future, I plan to be a test model for new hair products, because my hair would be the ultimate test. If that falls through I will shave my head and be an advocate for cancer patients, inspiring them to always feel beautiful.
