January 2011January 2011January 2011January 2011 NEWSLETTER
Sunshine Coast SportFishing Club Inc
Happy new year to everyone, I hope that you have had a relaxing holiday period and are looking for-ward to a great 2011.
The Club Christmas party was a really good day even with the weather that we had. About 40 or so members attended and enjoyed a huge feed and relaxed social atmos-phere. Thanks to Santa for taking time out of his busy schedule for the kids.
Congratulations to those mem-bers who were lucky enough to win a prize in the major Christmas raffle. This year’s raffle was really well or-ganized with a stack of great prizes (not just 1st, 2nd and 3rd, but a total of six really good prizes). Dave, thanks for all your hard work running it and Thanks to Wayne and Barb of Maroochydore Fishing World for your continued support of the club with the AWSOME prizes.
Despite the weather, there were a number of members who got out fishing over the last month and some of their stories and photos are on the following pages.
There is a very important event in February that we all need to put in our diaries. Fisheries is holding a public meeting about the planned 6 week closure to fishing for snapper, teraglin, and pearl perch. See page 4 for more details, mark it in your diary and lets go and at least have our say on the matter.
I am looking forward to a great year, plenty of fishing and getting my boat on the water. Hopefully I’ll have some progress on my boat to report on in the coming month or two. En-joy, and I’ll see you at the meeting at the coast guard on Thursday .
Till then, Fishful Thinking.

During the Christmas period, Joe
Hardman and Wayne Knib went fish-
ing, Here is their story.
When: Wednesday (new moon?)
6am-2pm
Where: Alexandra Headland, Outer
Gneerings
We caught: 2 rabbit fish, 4 toad fish,
1 grass emperor, 2 venus tusk fish, 1
pearl perch, 1 Spanish mackerel
Pilchards for pearl perch and tusk fish
Live bait for the Spanish mackerel on
long drifts around the blinker and in
and around the change from the
brown water to clear water
@#$%&: Arrived at the boat ramp
and had forgotten all the electronics.
This meant a drive back home, so we
got out to chase the spotted mack-
erel after the sun was up, which may
have been too late???
Then “Only” one rod tip ferrule this
trip (about average batting per trip –
thx to Wayne at Fishing World for
fast repair!). On our previous trip, Joe
tried to demonstrate the art of dead
lifting spotted mackerel into the
boat. Joe thinks his rebuilt rod, now
10cm shorter, will be better suited
for the job.
Around the Traps
Hi all, I hope that everybody has had a great Xmas and New Year. I would like to especially send our thoughts and best wishes out to John Miller and his wife, who have had a bit of trouble with their house. I am sure everybody in the club wishes them well and hope that their troubles are over soon.
Our Christmas party went off without a hitch. The rain kept a few of the members away, but we still had over 40 members attending. The main club raffle for the year was drawn at the Xmas party and 4 out of the six prizes were won by club members. Thanks again to Dave Butler who donated the 2 hams that were raffled off at the Xmas party.
Start getting your surplus fish-ing and boating gear ready for the club auction in April and last but certainly not least a big thank you to Mark who didn't have the gaff ready for my Spaniard that got away. Cheers, Vince.
Hi everyone, I hope you all had a great Chrissy. The weather gods keep dishing up wet windy and sh%#y forecasts, its gotta turn around soon!
As far as the spotties go, ru-mours are that square hooks have collected most of them. Its a shame to see schools of spotties wiped out for cat food. On a posi-tive note some quality Spanish macks have been caught on the close reefs, with pearlies also an the chew out wider. Don't forget that snapper, pearlies & trag jew cannot be taken from 15th Feb. to 31st March (new rules) for this year. Also check epirb rego dates they need to be updated every two years.
Fish of the month for January are Mangrove Jack and Spotted Mackeral.
See ya all at the meeting Cheers,
cap-tain Paul

Both my son and I had a fan-
tastic week in the Northern Terri-
tory when we linked up with some
friends and headed to the mouth
of the Daly River. The weather
was at its best and so was the
fishing. We caught Barramundi
with live poddy mullet from the
creek banks and ventured into the
bays with squid for golden snap-
per (fingermark) and dew.
Most of the time we spent
relaxing due to the fact that we
fished in a small depth of water,
the bag limits were quickly filled
and our local guide knew where
the fish hung out. So after thirty
minutes of fishing it was home
again. The following days were to
replace what we had eaten. I must
say all of it tasted fantastic and
surprisingly my pick was the dew
fish. I have caught many a dew in
Mackay, but none have tasted
that good.
The adventure quickly
turned around when ‘one more
cast’ for barra bait turned into a
sudden hit to the ankle from a
stingray. The hit instantly para-
lysed my right leg and within a
split second I found myself crawl-
ing to the beach by elbow propul-
sion with blood gushing out of my
foot from a severed vein. No one
came to my aid as they thought I
was joking . Finally help arrived
and Boyd, my son, stuck his finger
in the hole to stop the bleeding.
According to the doctor this saved
my life.
My friends carried me to the
house and started bathing my
foot in extremely hot water to
neutralize the toxins. This cooking
of the leg went on for three hours
and I began to worry if my friends
were cannibals. It is impossible to
fully describe the excruciating
pain. I have played rugby with
broken arms, cut off my finger,
swallowed 20cent coins, fallen off
motor bikes and had many knocks
living a country life. Nothing and
again, nothing compares to the
pain inflicted by that stingray. It
was like standing in boiling hot
water being constantly hit in the
ankle by a sledge hammer.
One thing leads to another.
The blood clot saves your life, and
then the same clot could become
a killer on the flight home - if not
fully checked: foot swells, blood
and bone infection sets in, leg cut
off and so on to maybe death. It is
all good now, although I still have
frequent spasms of pain and a
cold right foot. So my advice to
the fishing fraternity, enjoy the
Northern Territory and avoid tan-
gling with stingrays.

Yellow Patch
WOW! What a beautiful and
unique location. Yellow Patch is
on the North Eastern side of Curtis
Island off Gladstone and is part of
Curtis Island National Park. Glad-
stone is about a 5 hour drive from
the Sunshine Coast and from
there you can travel by boat to
Yellow Patch either around the
ocean side or up through the area
between Curtis Island and the
Mainland called The Narrows. Via
the outside it is about 28Nm from
Gladstone harbour and about
45Nm up through the Narrows.
Although it is further via the Nar-
rows it is mostly very sheltered
waters and therefore possible for
tinnies and smaller boats.
Back in September Trina,
Sophie and I were lucky enough to
spend a week at Yellow Patch with
my parents on their boat “TackZ
Haven”. Although the wind blew
around 30kn all week, we were
perfectly sheltered in behind the
sand dunes and trees.
There are numerous man-
grove lined creeks with awesome
amounts of structure and plenty
of mud crabs. We caught heaps of
fish including flathead, bream,
cod, stonefish, tarpon, pike and
fingermark as well as losing a few
bigger fish to the snags. There
were a couple of Barramundi
caught by other boaters whilst we
were there, however we were not
lucky enough to tangle with one.
There is a campground in
amongst the trees that is well pro-
tected from all but mosquitos. It
could make a great destination for
a club trip. The view from the top
of the sandblow is spectacular
with views out to the Keppel Is-
lands and beyond as well as back
down the Island to the South. Yel-
low Patch is well worth a visit if
you get the chance
Chris.

Midgie Repellant Recipe
200mls Dettol
200mls Baby oil
10mls Pure Lavender oil
10mls Eucalyptus oil
25mls Tea Tree oil
Biting midgies have a hista-
mine like substance in their saliva
which can cause intense itching in
sensitive individuals. To prevent
acute allergic reactions and allow the
body to develop its own immunity to
midge bites, try taking vitamin B-1.
Not in a blend, but pure B1
(Thiamine) This vitamin has an anti-
histamine type action. An adult dose
of 200mg twice a day with meals,
preferably starting 2 weeks before
exposure to midgies has been sug-
gested.
As immunity is developed this
dose can be reduced. Personal immu-
nity generally comes with regular
exposure to low numbers of midge
bites, not occasional heavy exposure.
Treatment of Affected area
♦ Wash asap with soap & water
♦ Calamine lotion
♦ Paste of baking soda and water
♦ Witch hazel (chemist)
♦ Aloe vera gel
♦ Pee on it (let me know if this
works)

What’s on & When
The chief woman ‘Greenie activist’ who was respon-
sible for fishing closures around the coast was climbing a
tree to have a look out over a forest when a Tawny Frog-
mouth owl attacked her for invading its nesting site.
In a panic to escape, she slid down the tree getting a great number of splinters lodged in her crotch area. In con-
siderable pain she hurried to the nearest doctor, told him she
was an environmentalist and how she got the splinters. The
doctor listened with great patience and then told her to go
into the examining room and he would see if he could help
her.
She waited 3 hours before the doctor reappeared.
Angry, the woman demanded “What took you so long?’
“Well....” Replied the doctor, “.....I had to get permits from
the Parks and Wildlife, the Department of Natural Resources
and the DPI before I could remove ‘old growth timber’ from
a ‘recreational area’.......I’m sorry, but they all turned me down.”
