Apple noted it saw a busy holiday season on the App Store, with customer spending reaching $1.42 billion between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve — a 16% increase over 2018.

On New Year’s Day, customers spent $386 million alone — a 20% increase over 2019 and a new single-day record.

The rivals announced that they’re working with the Zigbee Alliance — a foundation that promotes standards for the “internet of things” — and its members, including Samsung Electronics Co., Somfy SA and IKEA, on a new standard that will ensure their products work with one another.

Apple has about a dozen engineers from the aerospace, satellite and antenna design industries working on the project with the goal of deploying their results within five years.

SPOTLIGHT: APPLE NEWS APP

Apple News has racked up more than 100 million active users, the Silicon Valley giant revealed as it works to get its news subscription service off the ground.

The Apple News user base has grown from more than 85 million around this time in 2019. The news-aggregation app currently serves readers in the US, the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, where it launched last year.

Apple launched a paid version of the service in March called Apple News+, which offers access to more than 300 publications for $9.99 a month. Apple did not say how many subscribers have signed up so far. Apple could soon offer consumers a bundle combining News+ with Apple Music and Apple TV+ as part of its broader strategy to use services as a driver of revenue.
