500 years ago, this grand square on the edge of the Park was in the grounds of a leper hospital. King Henry Vlll built a stadium on the site for jousting tournaments and in 1660 King Charles ll based his royal bodyguards here. Their barracks were replaced in 1759 by a building with three arches.

The Green Park

1668 King Charles ll built a wall round the Park and called it Upper St James’s Park

1730 Queen Caroline created Queen’s Walk on the east side of the Park

1746 The Park was officially renamed The Green Park

1826-7 King George lV re-landscaped the Park and opened it to the public

1911 Queen Victoria Memorial unveiled

1994 Canada Memorial installed to remember Canadians who served in two World Wars

Canada Memorial

This modern memorial remembers one million Canadians who served with British forces during the two World Wars. You’ll find it near Constitution Hill, just to the west of the Broad Walk. A narrow walkway, dividing the memorial in two, faces the direction of the Canadian port of Halifax in Nova Scotia, from where many Canadian service personnel sailed for Europe.

SEPTEMBER ONWARDSWork to reinstate St James’s Park is carried out by The Royal Parks

OVERVIEWBetween 28 July and 9 September 2012, The Green Park and St James’s Park, which includes Horse Guards Parade Ground and The Mall, will host six Olympic and Paralympic events.

From 18 June construction work begins to build the two temporary venues which will host the Beach Volleyball and Road Race events. As shown on this map, some sections of St James’s Park are fenced off in order to allow this work to be safely carried out and will remain closed to the public until the end of September.

The Royal Parks has worked closely with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to develop plans for two venues in St James’s Park. These plans have been carefully designed to ensure that the impact of each event on the Park and on Park users is minimised.

VENUES AND COMPETITIONS IN ST JAMES’S PARKThis summer The Mall will host the start and finish of the Olympic and Paralympic Marathons, the Road Cycling races and the Race Walk competitions. Temporary venues consisting of grandstands, athlete areas and security checkpoints will be built for these events, which can be accessed by ticket holders only.

Horse Guards Parade Ground will host a 15,000 seat arena which will be home to the men’s and women’s Beach Volleyball competitions. Beach Volleyball training courts will also be located in St James’s Park.

Following this the temporary structures will be removed and St James’s Park will be fully reinstated by The Royal Parks.

PUBLIC ACCESSThe Green Park and the west section of St James’s Park, closest to Buckingham Palace, will remain open to the public throughout the summer and a north-south pedestrian access route across the Park will be maintained outside of Road Race events. The restricted ticket holder zone marked on this map will be closed to the public until the end of September.

The Queen Victoria Memorial and Constitution Hill will feature on the route of the Road Race events that start and finish on The Mall and the cycling leg of the Triathlon competitions. These areas will remain open to the Public outside of event days and rehearsals.

It is anticipated that both The Green Park and St James’s Park will be very busy during the Road Race events. Please plan carefully if you would like to visit these parks on competition days – visit www.getaheadofthegames.com Cycle parking will be provided in The Green Park from 28 July to 12 August.

CHANGING THE GUARDChanging the Guard at Buckingham Palace will continue as normal this summer except on Road Race event days. Changing the Guard, normally held on Horse Guards Parade Ground, will take place on Whitehall near Horse Guards Avenue until the end of the Paralympic Games in September.

REOPENING AND REINSTATING ST JAMES’S PARKFollowing the Olympic Games, the Beach Volleyball arena and training courts will be removed and work to return the Park to its previous condition will begin. Work to remove the Road Race venue structures on The Mall will begin in mid September, after the Paralympic Marathon.

All temporary structures will be removed from St James’s Park by the end of September. The Royal Parks will then carry out work, largely consisting of over-seeding, re-turfing and de-compaction, to return the Park to its previous condition. The majority of this work, which will be funded by LOCOG, will be carried out in the autumn, with some sections of the park being reinstated during the spring 2013 growing season.

NEARBY ROYAL PARKSHyde Park and neighbouring Kensington Gardens, a short walk from The Green Park, will offer visitors a range of attractions this summer. They will remain open to the public throughout the Games and cover a combined area of 625 acres (242 hectares) – leaving lots of space for relaxing in deckchairs and enjoying walks.

• Hyde Park will host BT London Live from 28 July to 11 August. Entry is free and visitors will be able to watch live BBC coverage of the sporting action on large screens, enjoy free entertainment – including music performances – and take part in a range of sporting activities. • Hyde Park will also host the Torch Relay Concert on 26 July and the Opening and Closing Ceremony Celebration Concerts on 27 July and 12 August. These events are ticketed.

• Hyde Park will be the main venue for the Olympic Triathlon (4 and 7 August) and Marathon Swimming (9 and 10 August) competitions – it will be very busy on these competition days.

• The London 2012 Shop at Hyde Park – 1 July to 16 September – which will offer visitors a range of merchandise and activities, will be based just south of The Serpentine – entry is free.

• Kensington Gardens is set to host two National Olympic Committee Houses: Sochi World and Africa Village – visitors will have the opportunity to learn about culture from across the African continent and Russia.

AMBASSADOR PODSThe Green Park and Hyde Park will be home to Ambassador Pods during the Olympic and Paralympic events, where London Ambassadors and Royal Parks’ volunteers will provide visitors with information about the London 2012 Games, attractions in the area and The Royal Parks.
