I t is a p p e n d e d to t h e i n fund ibu l a r region of t h e d iencepha lon by m e a n s of a delicate sho r t s t a lk j u s t beh ind t he opt ic ci l iasma. Tile m a i n b o d y of t h e g land pro jec ts ou t in to t h e m y o d o m e t h r o u g h fossa h y p o p h y s e o s . I t lies in all obl ique cral l io-caudM plane , w i th i ts b road end pos ter ior ly a n d t ape r i ng end an- teriorly. The b road end, topographica l ly , belongs to tile an te r ior side, a n d tile t ape r i ng end to ti le pos ter ior side. B u t t h e o r i en ta t ion of t i le p i t u i t a r y has been b r o u g h t a b o u t b y a ro t a t i on of t h e g land t h r o u g h an angle of 180 ~ du r ing devel- opmen t . T h e g l and is caudo- lep tobas ic type.

Tile cyanophi l s f o rm a consp icuous fea ture of t he p r o x i m a l pa r s dis tal is which also con ta ins orangeophi l ic acidopili ls a long wi th azocarmil lophi ls . I t is i n t e re s t ing to no te t h e presence of azocarminophi l ic in- c lusions in. t i le b lue c y t o p l a s m of t he cyanophi ls . Only t h e cyanoph i l s are s t a ined w i th P A S a n d A F techn iques , fol lowing m e r c u r i c - f o r m a l d e h y d e a n d Bou in ' s f ixat ion. The re appea r s to ex is t an i n t i m a t e re la t ion be- tween t h e p a r e n c h y m a cells of t he pa r s i n t e rmed ia an d tile neu rosec re to ry mater ia l s . The neu rosec re to ry ma te r i a l s show f l uc tua t i on du r ing t he biological cycle of th i s species.

The cyal lophi ls of t h e p rox ima l pa r s dis tal is d i sp lay c o n c o m i t a n t changes w i th those occur r ing in t h e g o n ad s du r ing t h e biological cycle of th i s species. I-ITy-pertrophy, hyperp las ia , in t ense g ranu la t ion , vacuo la t i on and degranu la - t ion charac te r ize these cyanophi l s du r ing t h e s p a w i n g period. These cyal lophi ls are ident i f ied as gonado t rophs .
