Sustainability is a cultural movement taking shape and changing the way we live. In building a cultural center that increases the knowledge of sustainable practices for the Baton Rouge area, the most important consideration is audience. In order to make an impact on society, the building should attract the correct audience. In saying this, I have taken a less obvi-ous turn on green design through the building’s aesthetics. Since the purpose of the building is used to educate, impact, and change society, I have made the entire building to accom-plish this through its artistic concept. Inspired by the contemporary street art of Banksy, Hyuro, and C215, the center’s concept and presenta-tion is a critical aspect of culture. Like street art, Baton Rouge Cultural Center takes what is real, available, and currently happening in its setting, makes a statement and becomes part of the town’s culture. The entire building, interior and exterior, fol-lows the process of LEED. Shipping containers to build BRCACC’s frame, LEED approved materials, daylighting, the building and site, and community connectivity were all specially designed to form a functional, sustainable, and aestically innovative cultural center for downtown Baton Rouge, LA.

“He clothed her with the most luxuriant of rain forests, painted her soft, sandy skin a rainbow of colors, and fashioned a chain of jewel-like lakes into the eyes of heaven…the Butchulla people, who passed down the story of its creation and in whose language K’gari came to be the word for ‘paradise.’” Fraser Island’s landscapes have inspired many of Austrailia’s greatest artists and writers, and are the basis of inspiration for the design of BRAADC. Rehab centers call for environments that reverse depression and relapse tendencies of the patients; therefore, each element of the design is created to enhance a peaceful, spiritual, and natural mood. The land-scape of the island is diverse and encompasses various elements that are seen in the design. Striations of the dunes are seen in space planning and the rich, earthy, and harmonizing hues are used as the color palette. As each room is used for a specific need, it relates to a piece of the island’s copious landscape. The Island is a legend whose spell affects visitors and inhabitants alike for a lifetime. “The psyche of the place has bitten into me deeply,” Austrailian artist Sidney Nolan wrote to a friend. As rehab patients heal, the effect morphs their life into something real and natural, and will the process stamps their lives forever, just as Fraser Island cre-ates a stir in people.

H O S P I T A L I T Y D E S I G N

Downtown Baton Rouge is an area rich with history. Digging into the nightlife citizens of Baton Rouge enjoy, it is easy to find college students mixed with young professionals that have fallen in love with the traditional attitude southern Louisiana adopts on living. However, they are also interested in cur-rent society that is taking place elsewhere among the nation and world. Like all professionals, the people in the area are passionate about their careers, but when it comes down to where their joys lie, a loyal crowd will always be found. These people never let the importance of strong relationships with family and friends slide, which preludes the concept of Affaire: a restaurant and lounge that takes customers to a place where they can easily communicate to a large group through its mixture of traditional and contemporary design. In order to accomplish this, Affaire is based upon French design ideas seen in traditional southern Louisiana homes; however, contemporary design elements create a whimsical, romantic, and innovative space. Lounge group seating, tapas dinner menu, and implementing a brunch menu plays off the social patterns of Louisiana’s citizens. The contemporary elements mixed with traditional French design produce a fantasy-type atmo-sphere that relates to the customers’ wants, and the overall design of group socialization relates to the customers’ needs.
