o5, TIwUNma wrrH eTs a•coflWO, .

However the moral pas•ions are above theanimal, as those which exalt human nature areabove those which lower it by meanness or de-pravity, both, when urged to their utmost, arenevertheless equal in the uncompromising vio-lence of their results.

A young flemish gentleman, having lived involuntary secluslon the greater part of his life,in company with his father, who had been ban-ished for some political quarrel in which he hadengaged, returned,oa the death of his father, tohis native town, which was in -.

Shortly after his arrival, he fell in love withthe daughter of a merchant in very reduced cir-cumstances He, being a youth ofstrong feel-ing and honorable sentiments and coadnuc, soonwon upon the sensibility of the young girl, andtheir affection became mutualand intense. Thefather, however, refused his consent to theirmarriage, because of their mediocrity ofi mans, since the youth had but little property andhim-self had not wherewith to give his daughter theleastfortune."But go," said he to the young gentleman,

"employ what money you have in business, and,if you follow my directions and experience, youmay, with assuidity, possess in a few years suf.ficient for an afflpent support; and I shall thenno longer deny my daughter."

This advice was as good as it was unwise. Itwas the most proper thing to recommend, andthe least likely to be done. The youth was ofan ardent temperament, and had passed his lifein solitude, with his sensibilities and passionsyearning for an object. Thishe had now found, and, having means to live, did not care to wairtedious years for the chance of doing so affluent-ly. He had found his log-desired object ofentire sympathy, and this he was determinednot to forego for a question of worldly possea-sions, wherein no man living is happy, or justi.fled, we had almost added, for "there aresecrets in all trades," which is only a conventional palliative for chicaneries.

Lest, however, he should lose the young lady'ssociety, the youth agreed to her father's propo-sition. He considered the old gentleman's post-ponement of the ceremony as involving a re-sponsibility for the consequences. Meantime, they were much together, and their affectionbeing excessive, the young man frequently be-sought her in the tenderest manner and withthe most earnest entreaties to grant him a pri-vate meeting in the garden after night-fall.But she, fearing detection, could never be pre-tailed upon; till one day, walking pensivelythrough a remote bower, she accidentally dis-covered the entrance to a cave, the existence ofwhich she had never before suspected; and, having communicated the circumstance to herlover, he so redoubled his entreaties that she.would meet him there alone the next night, that, overcome by his ardor and her own feelings, she at length gave her consent.

It so happened, that a laborer, who had beenfor some time at work in the adjacent fields, came into the garden to get some fruit, on themorning of the day on which thq lovers wereto hold their appointment. The trap-door ofthe cave having been opened by the young girlthe preceding day, it had disturbed the earthsurrounding it, so that the man presently dis-covered the entrance, and descended. In grop-ing about he stumbled over something, and, upon examination, he found it to be a largeearthenware jar, full of gold, which the fatherof the merchant had placed there in his lastillness, and, being a perfect specimen of themiser, he had died without breathing a syllableof the matter.

At this moment a sound of voices alarmed thelaborer, and quickly ascending and replacingthe trap-door, he escaped out of the garden,

Now this man, who had been bred in o-scurity, and surrounded with indigence all hislife, was by nature of an ambitious disposition. He was sensual, envious, and disatisfied accord-ingly. He longed for power, that he.mightabuse it; and fobr money, as the means of de-prayved indulgence. lHe now saw a prospect ofquickly gaining all his desires, and revelling inhis low appetites; and after wandering aboutthe fields a whole day, in a state of feverishabsorption, now mounting a hill, then climbinga tree, so as continually to take a view of themerchant's garden, he repaired at nightfallto the spot that contained his heartfelt gold, determined to possess himself of it at any rate

The laborer had scarcely descended into thecave, when the young man came to keep his ap-pointment. Finding the trap-door open, he de-scended also. It was quite dark, but heaningsomething move, he demanded who was there ?Receiving no answer, he repeated the questionin an authoritative voice.

" One who will defend his cause," said thela-borer, setting his teeth, " be you man or devil ;"for he thought that either the one or the otherhad come to seize the gold.

" For what purpose do you come here ?" de-manded the youth.

"The same that you come for," replied theother, with a sardonic laugh.

At this the youth jealously took fire, and heasked fiercely, " By what right ? "

" By right of previous conquest," said the la-borer, " By my own will-by good luck-or anyother right you please."

At these insulting words the youth closed withhim, and endeavored to thrust him out of thecave; but the laborer was the stronger, andcould not be moved.

Panting for breath, the young man went tothe entrance of the cave, followed by the la-borer, who watched every movement. Seeingby the rising stars that it was the exact time ofappointment with his love, whom he momenta-rily expected, he addressed the other in thesewords:

Infamous ana rune essamer, elhin not mygross falsities obtain the least credence fromme; but since you will not come out from thehave, so neither will I go forth without you,but will drag down the trap door, and encloseboth for ever."

The laborer's will was too much involved togive up the point; but seeing the youth in sucha state of excitement, he now began to thinkthat this might be the rightful owner of thegold, and he brought himself to concede so faras to say:" I will not give up the hope, ay, and oppor-

tunity, of possessing what my soul holds toodear to relinquish, except with life; neverthe-less, if you will consent to share tho treasure."

At this monstrous insult, as he understood it,to the delicacy and sincerity of his love, theyouth seized the trap-door, crying outfuriously." Wilt thou come forth ?"The laborer paused." What!" muttered he to :himself, " to be a

beggar again, or work in the field ? " Thenraising his voice, he answered sternly, " No, Iwill not come forth-so let death put us towhat use he thinks fit, for I'll sweat i' the sunno more !"

He had not concluded, when the youthdragged down the trap-door, and tearing outthe handle of the spring, they were both buriedalive.

The young lady was unable to keep her ap-pointment with her lover, being intercepted onher way by her father, who, in part, guessedher intention. After secluding her for a fewdays, he sent her to a convent in France, toSget over" her girlish attachment, where shefell into a consumption, and died in less than atwelvemonth. It is always wrong to thwart a sincere and

intense affeotion from any worldly or secondaryoauses whatever. The relolt is always tragic

D•syT or A MUBDEoB s.-The Chickasaw In-telligencer, published in an Indian nation, andedited by an Indian, givesthe following accountof the death of the Indian Lequahah, aliasPolecat, alias Morgan, the last surviving mur-derer of Messrs. Stem and Leppleman. Morgan, pursued by his tribe, traveled almost tyo hun-dred miles to the tent of a distant' brbther, which he entered at night, and. it reply4toin.-quiries propounded to him, repeated a truthfblnarration of his crime,.pursuit and escape. His brother heard the tale, reminded him offormer admonitions, and requested him to pro-mise to surrender himself to justice. He re-fused, and in a few moments fell dead by thehand of a man noble enough to esaridae even abrother upon the hallowed altar of public jus-tice. We regret that we have not his name, that it might be inscribed on the altar at whichhe worshipped, in golden letters, to be read andrevered by the votaries of Roman fame. Here, doubtless, many are prepared to smile at thecomparison between an American Indian andan ancient Roman; but we will ask those fondof pursuing such questions, wherein did theancient Romans, of the time of the elder Brutus, for instance, display better moral traits andqualities than the Kickapoos ? Was it their re-igion, their morals, their soial institutions, orform of Government ? Some weeks ago a manwas sent into Fort Arhucle, who stated thatthis murder was the result of a premeditatedplan by two Kickapoos, besides Okeyot andMorgan. He said that he did not know, theirnames, but could identify them. All the tribebut two--te suspected ones-were then assem-bled, anotRhe absentees being sent for, againwere said to have fled.
