Pastor’s Corner
Blessings,
Fr. Mark Bentz
On the 12th of December, 1531, one of the most amazing miracles in the
history of the church happened: the apparition of our Lady of Guadalupe.
Up until that day, there were very few converts in Mexico, and the natives
were very suspicious of the intentions of the Church. After the apparition, 8
million people became Catholic over 10 years! What was it that made such an impression on the
aztec and indigenous people?
The image was a ‘code’ that spoke in a language they could understand. Their pagan gods
demanded human sacrifice to maintain the weather in balance as well as avoid plague. There was
so much sacrifice, that at one temple archaeologists found more than 100,000 human skulls. There
were many such temples littered across the land. However, they were also awaiting the coming of
a new god and a new age of the sun foretold by their prophecies.
The image of our Lady told them that the time had come. She was standing in front of the
sun and on top of the moon, showing herself to be greater than their gods. However, she was not a
god, since she wore no mask (all the pagan aztec gods wore masks). Her face showed her to be a
mixed race woman-Spanish and Mexican. Her hair is hanging loose, indicating that she is a
virgin. However, she was also pregnant, indicated by the band high around her waist.
Immediately over her womb was a unique sacred aztec flower which was a symbol of the divine.
Looking at the rest of her dress, they could see flowers which represented all the different tribes as
well as a map of Mexico’s mountains. So they knew that, although this was a human woman, she
was carrying in her womb the new god they were waiting for, a god who was greater than all their
other gods, and a god who would be for all peoples.
So you can see, Our Lady of Guadalupe presents wonderfully the Advent message—Christ is
coming and he is the Lord of all. The Gospel is for every tribe and tongue and people and nation
and can speak to the hopes of every land. That is why St. John Paul II declared our Lady of
Guadalupe “The Star of the New Evangelization”. She is also the patroness of the unborn because
she helped end the slaughter of millions of innocent human lives. Let us pray today for her
intercession for us as a nation, that we may turn away from the false gods of our day and embrace
the Gospel of life.
(If you want to read more about this amazing miracle, check out the book, “Guadalupe Mysteries:
deciphering the code” by Ignatius press—its a wonderful read to encourage your faith this Advent)

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us that the good news can be seen, touched, felt and heard through the lives of God’s people. We are now charged to take up the ministry of Jesus’, but we can’t just ask people to take our word for it; our actions must speak for us.
Since Christmas is a time of love and gift giving, please share in Jesus’ ministry by giving a gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that those who are poor can know the good news of Jesus.
