He obtained his FRACS in 1973 and subsequently specialised in knee surgery involving arthroscopy, cruciate ligament reconstruction and knee arthroplasty. He has lectured in 38 countries; published in 18 peer reviewed orthopaedic journals and contributed 5 book chapters.
He has received the highest award offered by the Australian Orthopaedic Association - the L. O. Betts Medal - and has been awarded Honorary Life Membership of the AMA, AKS, ISAKOS, ESSKA, NZKSSS and AANA; the Takagi-Watanabe Award from APKASS and the first Education Award from APOA. He was the Chairman of the APOA Congress in 2016 in Melbourne, which was a resounding success.
He is the Patron to ASSA and has been Presidential Guest Lecturer to the AOA, NZOA, Malaysian OA, Indonesian OA, Philippines OA, Japanese AA, BASK, ESSKA, APKS and APKASS.
For more than 20 years, Dr Bartlett has been the Supervisor of the Melbourne Fellowship in Knee Surgery, training some 100 International and Australian Fellows. He has also been awarded Traveling Fellowships for teaching by the RACS, AOA, APOA, APOSSM and the Cleveland Clinic. He has held Executive and/or Committee Chairman positions with the APOA, AOA, AKS, ISAKOS, APKS, APKASS, ACLSG and Magellan Society and has been an Editorial Board member of Asian, American and European journals.
He recently retired as Director of Specialist Surgery at the Austin & Repatriation Hospital and Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne. Dr Bartlett has a keen sporting interest in golf, tennis, football, cricket, fishing, skiing and horse racing.
Dr Bartlett has been a mentor and friend to a whole generation of orthopaedic surgeons in this region who greatly value his contribution to Orthopaedic Surgery and knee surgery in particular. His passion for teaching and generosity with his time and resources has helped many of us improve our skills and knowledge to better serve our patients. He has made many trips to Malaysia to teach and has hosted many fellows from here. To demonstrate our gratitude, we have created the inaugural JB Excellence In Sports Surgery Award to commemorate the Best Free Paper Oral Presenter at this APOA Sports Meeting 2019.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Selamat Datang! Welcome to the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association (APOA) Sports Meeting incorporating Orthopaedic Research 2019!
It is my great pleasure, on behalf of the Sports Injury Section of APOA, to welcome every one of you. This meeting is a collaboration
between the Sports Injury Section of APOA and the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Research Society.
The planning of this meeting began 16 months ago and today is a culmination of many months of intense work, meetings and effort by many individuals and parties which includes our highly acclaimed international faculty, our international and national organising committee, the support of the industry and free paper abstracts submitters.
In this meeting, we have for the first time, the inaugural JB Excellence in Sports Surgery Award which will be awarded to the best Free Paper Oral Presentation for this meeting. This award is named after the illustrious Dr John Bartlett whom many of us in this region calls him our trainer. Dr Bartlett has trained more than 100 international and Australia fellows during his time as the Supervisor of the Melbourne Fellowship in Knee Surgery for over 20 years. He has lectured in over 38 different countries and is a recipient of many awards in recognition of his excellent work and contribution. It is therefore fitting and an honour for the APOA Sports Injury Section to recognise his excellent work and contributions to the development of orthopaedic sports by naming this award after him. It is our hope that this award this year will be the start of a continuing tradition for many generations young orthopaedic sports surgeons to come.
We are proud to welcome delegates from all over the Asia Pacific region and across the globe. We hope that all of you would stay engaged, and benefit from the knowledge and learning experience of our distinguished list of renowned speakers, whom we are very honoured to have at our meeting.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my International and Local Organising Committee, Invited Faculty, APOA Councils, and not forgetting, the Sponsors for their participation and generous contribution to this meeting.
The world of Sports Surgery is an exciting and rapidly evolving field, and we must continue to meet and bring inspired people together at meetings such as this to ensure Sports Surgery remains at cutting-edge.
Hilton Hotel KL is very strategic and highly connected to various attraction in the city via KL Sentral. We hope that you would find time to explore Kuala Lumpur in the evenings.
Once, again, I extend my warm welcome to all the delegates. I hope you will have an insightful and enjoyable time in this beautiful city.

Welcome Message From The Chairman Of The Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Research Society (APORS) & Scientific Chairman For Orthopaedic Research Of The APOA Sports Meeting 2019 Incorporating Orthopaedic Research
Dear Fellow APOA / APORS Members, Colleagues, and Guests,
Welcome to Kuala Lumpur and to the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Research Society’s first scientific meeting. We are excited this year to be able to hold our first scientific meeting in conjunction with the Sports Injury Section of the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association
(APOA). Kuala Lumpur is a great place to be; well known for its great scenery, strong cultural heritage and more famously, our great food that aims to please every palate. This year marks our first ever scientific society meeting and thanks to the support of our many friends, we look forward to making this meeting a great success.
When this society was setup in 2018, the aim was to create a research environment that will foster new ideas for orthopaedic practices. A meeting such as this would help to boost this effort by providing our attendees with the opportunity to exchange ideas, present their research, network, and collaborate with friends and colleagues.
I would like to thank the APOA for supporting our efforts to create this great society. In time we expect that with strong determination, this society will drive orthopaedic research in this region by providing a platform for great minds to get together and make great strides in the areas of musculoskeletal sciences.
We would like to thank you for being here and it is our sincere hope that you would enjoy the meeting and of our legendary Malaysian hospitality!

Welcome Message From The President Of Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association (APOA)
First of all, I would like to thank Dr Charanjeet Singh - Chairman of Sports Injury Section APOA & Organizing Chairman APOA Sports Meeting 2019, Prof Dr Tunku Kamarul Zaman - Chairman of Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Research Society, Local Scientific Committee APOA Orthopaedic Research Meeting 2019, Dato’ Dr Badrul Akmal Hisham Md Yusoff - Scientific Chairman APOA Sports Meeting
2019, and all Organising & International Committee Members, for the realization of the APOA Sports Meeting 2019 incorporating Orthopaedic Research, between the 4th and 6th April 2019, including the pre-conference day the 3rd April 2019, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
It is my great pleasure to announce this scientifically important, and unique meeting combining Sports Injuries, and Orthopaedic Research, especially focused on knee, and shoulder problems, including cartilage lesions. This meeting is enriched with live cadaveric demonstrations, workshops, and scientific sessions by distinguished speakers from all over the world. Moreover, this meeting has an important aspect, which is the offer of 100 education grants to encourage young orthopaedic surgeons and young orthopaedic researchers to take up this opportunity to present their research and papers in the free paper sessions. This is vitally important for the future of APOA, in great synchrony with the philosophy of the APOA - Young Surgeon’s Forum (YSF), which has been founded during my term, in 2018.
Besides the scientific aspects, this meeting will surely be important in terms of experiencing the truly Asian culture, lifestyle, entertainment, and wonderful gastronomy. These aspects will bring us closer, to improve the efforts for the peace in the world.
Finally, I strongly believe that this initial meeting will be highly valuable not only for the orthopaedic surgeons, and researchers in the Asia Pacific region, but also for our colleagues from all over the World, including “Young Surgeons”. In this context, on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association (APOA), I would like to kindly welcome all of you to the APOA Sports Meeting 2019 incorporating Orthopaedic Research, in the fascinating city of Kuala Lumpur!
Best wishes,
