I was never the type known for being handy with a hammer or proficient with
a power saw. I took a mandatory wood shop class in 8th grade, but I’m good on bookends and bird feeders at the moment.
What I need, how-ever, is to knock down a few walls (which I be-lieve are load-bearing), add a tile backsplash in the kitchen, replace countertops and put up trim throughout the down-stairs. All are things much more complex than bookends and bird feeders, so I’m teaching myself to become a do-it-yourselfer.
I’ve started with some small projects around the house for practice before tackling the big stuff. A home is the biggest finan-cial investment most of us will ever make, but with time and ef-fort it’s also is an investment that can grow sooner than later.
Make no mistake, remodeling and updating your home is a time-consuming and costly venture, but it’s also one that will increase how much you enjoy your living space and the overall equity you have in your home. The key, however, is to spend less than what the added value of the improvements will be. That usually means doing as much work as possible yourself.
There’s no shortage of informa-tion for aspiring handymen and handywomen, you just have to pick a source. Detailed books and
manuals can be found in most hardware stores, and plenty of instruction can be found online and on TV. I personally am a big fan of HGTV and the DIY Network. One of my guilty pleasures, I’ll admit, is watching renova-tion disasters by other do-it-yourselfers (they serve as a reminder of
what not to do and when to throw in the towel and hire a pro).
Knowing when to hire a pro-fessional contractor and put one’s ego aside is important. Some jobs need professional expertise, even if it’s just having a contractor inspect your work while it’s in progress and upon completion. I person-ally have drawn the line at plumb-ing and electrical work.
Becoming a do-it-yourselfer re-quires the right tools, determina-tion, some friends to help with heavy lifting, and some reliable instructions. The cost savings will be worth it in the end.

Juneau is a dog-friendly town, just look on any sidewalk, trail or beach for the proof. From the doggie day care centers for pampered pooches to the dog treats offered at coffee shops and banks, Alaskans love their dogs.
But finding a dog-friendly rental in Juneau can be a “ruff” and lengthy process. Most rental units here don’t allow pets, and that could be driving some people away.
Sander Schijvens, CEO of Wost-mann & Associates, Inc., an infor-mation technology company with offices in Juneau and Anchorage, said a couple of his employees have had
trouble finding a pet-friendly rental in Juneau despite months of search-ing. One is considering leaving Ju-neau and perhaps telecommuting from Southcentral Alaska or another Southeast community.
“The reality is that with a small business you’re also a family, and I want to do what I can to help out,” he said. “You never want to lose a good employee” because of housing issues.
Schijvens said that having an uncertain housing situation can be stressful and a distraction for employees. Two of his 30 staff cur-rently are having trouble finding pet-friendly rentals.
One difficulty, he said, is that those new to town don’t know where to look.
It’s not uncommon in Juneau for a rent-al to become occupied with new tenants before ever being listed. And during a search on Craig’s List most of rentals listed explicitly stated “No pets.”
“It seems the best way to find a place is just to know someone,” Schi-jvens said.
He isn’t the only professional to have available housing be a thorn in his company’s side. A 2010 study by the Juneau Economic Development Council found that more than half of
businesses surveyed considered avail-able/affordable housing to be a key issue among employees.
But knowing the right people cer-tainly helps, said one Juneau renter.
“I was surprised how difficult it was to find landlords willing to rent to a pet owner. Juneau is such a dog-friendly town,” said Meggie Rein-holdt, a 28-year-old case manager who moved to Juneau in 2008.

If you’re tired of assembling shelving made of particle board or want to make the most of your homes awkward nooks and cran-nies, then wall-mounted shelving is as easy and cost-effective as it gets.
The shelving, which consists of metal standards, adjustable brackets and ready-made shelves, is perfect for home offices, walk-in closets, laundry rooms, pan-tries, garages and kids’ rooms. The shelves are easy to install and even easier to adjust whenever needed.
The only tools you need are a power drill, level, measuring tape and pencil.
Step 1.The metal standards need to be
secure so it’s essential that you sup-port the shelving by mounting the standards into wall studs. Trying to
secure shelving by placing screws into drywall will pull the entire shelf down over time if too much weight is applied.
Start by using your stud finder to locate all the studs along a par-ticular wall, marking each with a pencil. Ensure the studs in your
wall extend the length of the tracks and that you have marked the cen-ter of the stud. The distance be-tween tracks will vary depending on the weight of what will go on the shelves. In the example pro-vided tracks were placed about 20 inches apart. Never go more than three feet apart in order to prevent
the shelves from gradually bowing under pressure.
Note: Reliable stud finders can be purchased for $15-$25 at practically any hardware store. It’s worthwhile to invest in a stud finder with multiple settings that can also locate wiring in-side the walls. That extra feature doesn’t cost much extra and can save you from drilling into your electrical wiring.
Step. 2Using paper and pencil draft
what you want the shelves to look like once installed. Are you trying to wrap shelving around a big screen TV, or perhaps make the most use of wall with odd nooks? Essentially you want to take into account any objects you need the shelving to form around to ensure that your pieces fit within the designated area and that there are enough studs to support the weight.
How To: Wall-Mounted Shelving

Step 3.Using two-inch wood screws
secure the first track to the wall, ensuring the track is vertically level. Don’t tighten the top screw too much. You want the metal standard to be secure but to also freely hang. Once the track is level insert your bottom screw. Next hold the second track in place while you use the level to ensure both tracks are even across the top.
Once the second track is level in-sert the top screw. Now add a set of brackets and a shelf and check once more to ensure the shelf is lev-el. Then you can finish driving in the remaining screws. Repeat this step for other mounts. Now you’re ready to start placing the remaining brackets and shelves.
Note: It’s crucial that all wall mounts be perfectly level so that weight is distributed evenly.
A fun way to make your shelving mesh with a room is to stain shelves made of natural wood and to paint
the brackets and metal standards. This last part is simpler and will save time if done before the actual installation.
Wall-mounted shelving won’t work in every room in your home, nevertheless is remains a quick, convenient and affordable alterna-
tive to standard bookshelves. In some instances it may even require less assembly time and be much cheaper.

HUD awards $64M to Alaska tribal housing organizations
The U.S. Department of Hous-ing and Urban Development awarded more than $64 million to 32 tribal housing organizations and villages in Alaska. The funds are intended to help address afford-able housing needs.
The funding comes from nearly $210 million in Indian Housing Block Grant formula allocations allotted to 146 tribes in 25 states. The funds are dis-tributed annually based on a for-mula to eligible Indian tribes or their tribally designated housing entities for a range of affordable housing activities.
The block grant approach to housing was enabled by the Native American Housing Assistance and Self Determination Act of 1996.

The National Association of Home Builders is now accepting entries for the Best in American Living Awards. The award is one of the most presti-gious in the home building industry.
Sponsored by the association’s Design Committee, the award rec-ognizes “exceptional design and uses the example of trend-setting designs to educate builders and improve residential design in all aspects of the housing industry.”
BUILDER magazine, the official publication of the National Asso-ciation of Home Builders, is sponsor-ing the award for 2011. The Best in American Living Award is now in its 28th year.
“Every year, BALA winners rede-fine design excellence for the resi-dential construction industry,” said Lynne Pratt, chair of the Design Committee.
Platinum, gold and silver awards are given to single-family, multifam-ily, remodeling, community and in-terior design projects in several cat-
egories. Top honors include Home of the Year, Room of the Year and Com-munity of the Year.
Winning entries in selected cat-egories will be featured in BUILDER magazine’s February issue at the In-ternational Builders’ Show in Or-lando. In addition winners will ap-pear on www.builderonline.com and www.nahb.org.
The BALA program “highlights the most creative and innovative builders, architects, developers, land planners, remodelers and interior de-signers in the nation,” according to the association.
For more information about the program and to apply visit www.nahb.org/bala.

Reinholdt said even when she of-fered to pay a pet deposit or addition-al monthly rent for her dog that “no one seemed willing to take a chance.”
“We missed out on some amaz-ing places because of having a dog, even though this is a great town to raise one,” she said. “We must have been rejected by dozens of potential landlords. We dreaded having to ask the question, ‘Do you allow pets?’ We knew the answer would be ‘no.’”
Reinholdt said that she, her boy-friend and their Golden Retriever Dexter eventually found a pet-friendly rental after deciding to work with a property manager in Juneau. The property manager was able to convince an out-of-town homeown-er to rent to them, she said.
“We love living in Juneau but it’s a shame it was so difficult to find a pet-friendly rental in such a pet-friendly town,” she said.
Stacey James, a 23-year-old sea-sonal worker who moved to Ju-neau in May, said she spent months searching for a pet-friendly rental before deciding to leave her Labra-dor-mix Hunter with friends back home in Washington.
“I love to hike and Hunter keeps me company, and I wish I could have brought him here,” she said. “Every-body in Juneau has a dog except me. I could never stay here though with-out Hunter. He would definitely like it here though.”
One local property manager who asked their name be withheld said there are several reasons why land-lords don’t rent to pet owners.
“When someone owns the home they usually just don’t want to take a chance the pet owner isn’t respon-sible,” he said. “A pet deposit usu-ally will only replace carpet in one room.”
The property manager said condo associations and apartment com-plexes usually have different reasons for prohibiting pets.
“With multi-unit housing it’s of-ten about concern that a dog will be a nuisance to neighbors, either by barking all the time or having a dog owner who doesn’t clean up after the animal.
“But there are landlords who have pets and understand how difficult it can be to find a place. I’d recom-mend calling property managers around town. We have contacts and can lend a hand with searching.”
