It’s finally here, welcome to March! This month is filled

with celebration and lots of green! We welcome St. Patrick’s day, the first official day of spring (we’ll see…), Earth Day, and Easter to name a few. But the month of March is one of my favorite months particu-larly because it’s the month of the

Juneau Home Show! Two years ago Southeast Living Magazine made it’s debut at the Juneau Home Show and has since continued to grow and gain support from the Southeast Alaska communities. This March issue of the Magazine has taken a larger part in the Home Show this year and is the official publication of the event. The theme of this year’s show is “Living Local” and that’s what this publica-tion is all about. I love most things

about Southeast Alaska and that’s why I enjoy my job so much. I take joy in helping local businesses and local business owners across Alaska achieve their goals. I relish reporting and photo-graphing local events, and I am very lucky to have the

opportunity to visit and share content of the uniqueness and beauty of living local in this great land. I am

also very fortunate to have locals contribute and I truly appreciate the support of the community, readers, writers and advertisers. Without you this magazine wouldn’t be possible. Feel free to visit me at the Juneau Home Show on March 8,9 and 10 at

Centennial Hall. I am located at tabletop one, in front of the main entrance door by the ticketing area. Please share with me your thoughts, ideas, and comments!

Living local means something different to everyone but

in the context of the Home Show and Southeast Alaska

Building Industry Association (SEABIA), it holds a whole

different meaning. All of us understand that when you buy

building materials from a hometown supplier those dol-

lars stay in the community. According to experts on the

subject the dollars you spend at a local business circulates

in the community seven times. That’s the building related

business paying wages and CBJ property taxes that support

community infrastructure such as pools, libraries, utilities,

roads, schools and the list goes on. It’s also the employee’s

wages that buy homes, rent apartments, shop, use the ferry,

see the doctor, pay the light bill and the list goes on.

But why use local contractors? You may be saying to your-

self, aren’t all contractors local? It’s not just because they live

here. It’s much more. SEABIA members tend to be more

educated on the unique aspects of building in Juneau’s wet

climate. Our members tend to be permanent residents of

Juneau, have established businesses, contribute to the many

requests for donation from youth and others and work

tirelessly to provide affordable housing opportunities for

Juneauites. Our members understand the relationship of

vapor and moisture, that air tightness trumps R-value and

that affordability is more than the up-front cost of a project.

The home show, hosted by SEABIA, is your opportunity

to meet local builders and suppliers who have invested in

Juneau. The exhibitors provide you the opportunity to visit

with them, pick their brains about your projects and take

advantage of their years of experience in a no pressure set-

ting. Over 60 vendors are available at this year’s show from

builders, developers, bankers, realtors, government, roofers,

plumbing and heating to designers. Saturday offers the op-

portunity to learn even more through educational seminars.

The ever-popular round table discussion of “No Regrets Re-

modeling” is back.

This year’s show kicks off on Friday evening with a wine

tasting event for those over 21 years. Enjoy great wines pro-

vided by Southern Odem Wine & Spirits and tasty treats

provided by Abby’s Kitchen. This is a great time to discover

a new wine, meet friends for a night out and visit with us in

a low-key, enjoyable setting. Tickets are available in advance

or at the door. We hope to see you there.

By Greg StopherStopher Construction

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A Construction Professional?

Is your contractor licensed? When

hiring a contractor to renovate a kitchen, build a deck, build your home,

or replace your bathroom, this is the first question you should ask.

I’ve told this story in the past, but I think it illustrates the importance of hiring a

professional:

I received a call from an insurance

agent and her client had lost half of his roof in a windstorm. I covered the roof u n t i l i n s u r a n c e

details were worked out and

the weather permitted putting down a new roof. Upon

inspection, I was unable to find anything right with the roof. In talking with the homeowner, he had just discovered the “contractor” responsible for replacing his roof a few months earlier was not a licensed contractor. The individual

acting as a contractor was in need of money and charged the homeowner for a new roof and a deposit for the house to be painted in the spring. The homeowner ended up out the money and did not have a decent roof on his home. This scenario is common down south but I never thought I would run across this in a small community such as Juneau. Stories like this give contractors a bad name even though this person was NOT a “contractor.” What options does the homeowner have in this case? What can a homeowner do to make sure they are hiring a legitimate contractor?

Homeowners need to continue to complete projects to make their home comfortable, safe, and healthy but sometimes they don’t know where to turn. I can say that most, if not all, contractors have run into projects that took a little longer than anticipated, project scopes that grew, or accidents on the job. Building in Southeast Alaska can be a challenge for the homeowner and contractor alike. There can be a lot

of stress in dealing with something so valuable. Here are a few things to keep in mind to reduce some of the stress in any home project you might be undertaking.

In the state of Alaska, it is required that contractors be licensed and that all licensed contractors hold insurance. There are specialty licenses, contractor licenses, and contractor licenses with residential e n d o r s e m e n t s . Licensed specialty contractors can perform work on three distinct non-mechanical trades such as roofing, fences, and landscaping to name a few. A General Contractor can perform work on structures but on privately owned structures are limited to 25% of the value of the structure. A General Contractor with a Residential Endorsement can perform work on

any residential structure. A contractor should be able to prove that they are licensed and insured before starting a job because if something goes wrong and something sometimes does go wrong, you will be covered. If a contractor is not insured, which means that they are

not licensed in the State of Alaska, the homeowner can be negatively affected and will be liable for an injury on site. Is it worth it?

An individual performing the work of a contractor without a license

has not taken the steps to make a commitment to the profession, does not have the required minimum education and is not invested in the outcome of the project. The price might be right but what happens when your roof blows off in a windstorm? Licensing, insurance, and bonding is the first step to being

a professional in the construction industry.

Once a homeowner has verified their contractor is licensed, it’s time to check references. Contact references and ask to see some of the contractors work. A legitimate contractor should have photographs of past projects for homeowners to review as well as at least three references who can vouch for the contractor’s professionalism, skill and knowledge.

Another important way that contractors can build professionalism in the industry is through involvement in organizations like national, regional or local building associations, and through their involvement in the community. Building associations bring contractors together in an environment where current industry best practices are shared to help set a more consistent standard among members.

“In the state of Alaska, it is required that contractors be

licensed and that all licensed contractors

hold insurance.”

Many associations are taking steps to meet community needs and are looking to the future of the construction industry. Healthy discussions between contractors within these organizations can bring better, higher quality, healthier homes to people. By being involved in the community, a contractor shows they are vested in the community they work in and are involved in trying to provide a better quality of life for the residents.

Is your contractor committed to continued education? Contractors need to be aware of current best practices within the industry. Research and development in the construction industry have come a long way since many of our fathers were contractors. What we learned with them early in our careers as contractors is now only a base for putting projects together and shaping our work ethics. Continuing education has put a lot of contractors on the cutting edge of development in

the industry today. It’s been exciting to see houses become more efficient, healthier, and more durable.

The industry has come a long way but it still has a long way to go. It’s a great time to be involved in construction because so many pioneering changes

are happening today. Building science, homes working as systems, energy efficiency and weatherization are all areas on the forefront of change. I love

being a General Contractor and I know other contractors love doing what they do. As contractors, we have a lot to overcome but together we can elevate

the field from one that is sometimes not trusted to one where people see their contractor as a professional. A professional committed to the science of construction and a professional who is honest, reliable and committed to looking at your home as a balanced system.

Greg Stopher has over 16 years of ex-perience in the construction field and earned a degree in Construction Tech-nologies from the University of Alaska – Southeast. His company, Stopher Construction, LLC, is a general con-tracting company specializing in re-modeling, custom finishes, additions and new home construction projects. A lifetime of dream-ing and planning be-came reality for these homeowners with a lot of hard work and an innovative, flex-ible contractor. These homeowners wished to be involved in the construction process at every stage. From plac-ing the home on the site, to supplying the finish lumber that was salvaged from a former building on the site, to designing the showers and staining the fin-ished concrete floors, these home owners were hands on from the get go. Choosing a contractor willing to work with the own-ers was a must. Alaska Renovators proved to be the right choice.

From budgeting to design ideas to doing the heavy lifting it all came together to make for a truly unforgettable process and a one-of-a-kind home.

A floor to ceiling wall of windows make for a picture perfect view of evening sun-sets. A 21 foot tall cedar ceiling with large beams add to this home’s wow factor. The home features a heated concrete floor that the owner stained with a deep sea green color. Three layers of clear, water based finish add to the depth and luster of the stained floor.

The kitchen features a large peninsula with a cook top and island hood. A large granite counter top adds to the natural elements of the home and makes for a great gather-ing spot for family and guests. A Hickory butcher block topped island provides a centralized work area. Six feet of pantry make for an efficient, working kitchen. A garden window over the kitchen is a great location to grow herbs. Nine feet of sunroom space adds to the view and al-lows light into the dining area, bringing the outdoors inside, even on the rainiest

of days.

The exterior deck and covered bar-b-que area allow for year round enjoyment of this outdoor space.

The added thermal performance adds to the home’s long-term energy performance and reduces the homes monthly opera-tional costs.

Bauer/Clifton Interiors is an interior design firm located in Juneau, Alaska. Jeremy Bauer and Jason Clifton, the principals of Bauer/Clifton Interiors, are designers that share a passion for creating styl-ish, organic, and contemporary spaces.

This kitchen was originally built with a basic layout and completed in standard finishes. Not only did this kitchen lack character and style, but it was also incred-ibly undersized for the large scale of this home as well. Fortunately for this home, its new owners were ready to kick things up a notch and had a clear vision of what they wished to accomplish for this remodel!

At the top of their list, was a modern styled interior that had a warm overall feeling to it; a characteristic not normally associated

with modern interiors that are often per-ceived as being cold and sterile. Secondly,

they wished to achieve more work space and storage with-out creating a “bowling alley effect” by just placing cabine-try along each opposing wall, all the while

maintaining the pass through door that connects the kitchen to the garage. Lastly, lighting improvements were required since the existing fixtures in the tall ceilings did little to provide adequate task lighting for

this space.

We started by removing it all and creat-ing a fresh layout that zoned the space into separate areas of function for cleaning, storage, food prep/cooking, baking, and entertaining. While each of these areas have their own dedicated zone, the layout allows for work to spill over into adjoining zones to achieve even more flexibility with-in this space. Since this room is less than 10’ wide, we knew there wasn’t enough space to incorporate an island so we opted to use a few other tricks of the trade to avoid creating a traditional galley kitchen. We began by pulling the lower cabinets near the cooking zone away from the wall to achieve 31” deep counters in this space. This not only provides extra counter space,

but it also helps to break up the long run of cabinetry and moved the gas cooktop 6” closer to the wall ovens found on the opposite wall. This bump out also created a focal point and we further embellished

this section with the addition of metallic penny round tiles that run vertically be-hind the cooktop.

Across from the cooktop and cleaning zones, are two additional areas located on either side of the wall oven and pass-through cabinet. To the left is a zone geared towards baking, complete with deep drawers and a Kitchen Aid mixer lift-up cabinet, and to the right is additional counter space that doubles for entertain-ing that also acts as a buffet surface for the dining area. We skewed the cabinetry and countertops along this wall to offer an additional break in the linear layout of

the room as well. This area of the home already had many angles to work with so these new angles fur-ther enhance the original character. The angled entertaining zone fol-lows through to the open shelving above the baking zone and is also mirrored by the open shelving lo-cated in the far corner.

To achieve a sense of warmth within this modern space, we in-corporated natural materials in varying textures that all relate to a monochromatic color palette. The modern maple cabinetry by Show-place Wood Products is in a taupe colored stain that mutes the natural

yellow-y tone of maple and ties in directly with some of the coloring found within the wood flooring. The Acacia wood floor-ing is in a hand scraped finish that truly comes to life when the natural light floods into this space. This hand scraped finish was also chosen to lessen the appearance of normal wear and tear from pets and daily activities.

The quartz counters in a honed finish rep-licate the look of modern, concrete coun-tertops but are super durable and basically maintenance free. These were then accent-ed by a natural sandstone tile backsplash

that has inlaid penny round tiles through-out. These also add a sense of whimsy to the space as well. Of course, these tile de-tails would go unnoticed if it wasn’t for the recessed puck lighting located in the upper cabinetry and floating shelves. This same lighting was used in the 2” thick soffits cre-ated specially for this kitchen alone, and delivers the perfect amount of task lighting for this snazzy kitchen!

The combination of clean lines, modern materials, warm colors, and an improved layout granted our clients’ wishes and will

make this home an enjoyable destination for family and friends for years to come.

Samples of all materials used on our projects can be seen at the Bauer/Clifton Interiors studio located at 119A 2nd Street. To see up-dates of our current projects, please “like” our Facebook page under Bauer Clifton Interiors or visit our website at www.bauerclifton.com

STOP BY BOOTH #32 AT THE JUNEAU HOME SHOW TO LEARN MORE...

For a group of Juneau women hockey play-ers, a big win in Las Vegas this winter

wasn’t a gamble, but the result of months of preparation on and off the ice. The Juneau Ice Cold Labatts, a new travel team of women who play in the Juneau Adult Hockey Asso-ciation (JAHA) league, competed in the Las Vegas Women’s Classic tournament at the end of January. The Labatts played in an interme-diate division against teams from Los Angeles, Phoenix, St. Louis and Durango, Colorado. Two other Alaska teams, from Anchorage and Kenai, competed in different divisions of the tournament.

The Juneau women were undefeated coming into the c h a m p i o n s h i p game against the Durango Betties, having won their first three games 3-0, 6-0 and 3-0. With three shutouts under her belt, goalie

Heather Strickland didn’t want to hear anyone say the “S word,” but she continued to block every single shot she faced from the Betties. At the end of three periods, the score stood at 0-0, and the game went into “sudden death” overtime—the first team to score would win it all. The Betties were fierce, but the Labatts were determined, even with two players bat-tling knee injuries. Finally, with just a few minutes left on the clock, the Labatts offense shook off the Betties and launched a series of shots culminating in the game-winning goal by Caroline Schultz, who shed tears of joy

as the team and fans erupted in cheers.

Center Valeria Martinez, defend-er Lorna Wilson, Schultz and Strickland were named to the all-tournament

team.

“I’ve never been so proud to coach a group

of people as I am with this

team,” said coach Thomas McKenzie. “The way this team came together during the tour-nament was awesome to watch.”

The Labatts represented a wide range of ex-perience levels and ages, and many of the women had never played in an out-of-town tournament before. This was intentional, said team captain and JAHA president Laine Dur-gin, who hopes the team will usher in a “new era” of women travel hockey players from Ju-neau. “I’m glad so many women from JAHA could come together and represent Juneau in

Las Vegas,” she said. “Looking forward to go-ing again next year!”

She’s not the only one.

The Juneau Ice Cold Labatts are Rachel Brown, Laine Durgin, Daria Horne, Kathleen Hansen, Christy Hartman, Angel Kwok, Sar-ah Lowell, Valeria Martinez, Janice McLean, Caroline Schultz, Lizzie Solger, Katie Spiel-berger, Heather Strickland and Lorna Wilson.

The annual Shamrock Tournament is happening this year on March 15-17. For those who don’t know, this is a Southeast Alaska invitational tournament for adult

soccer players. The tournament is coed and played indoors. Given that the tournament falls on St. Patrick’s Day, the event is known as the Shamrock

Tournament. There will be six teams battling it out over six games for chance to lift the Shamrock Trophy. Two of those teams will be from Whitehorse and one team will be from Petersburg. The other three teams will be made up of local Juneau soccer players. Spectators are encouraged to stop by the Dimond Park Field House and cheer on your home town favorites.

In addition to this exciting, fast paced soccer, the Shamrock also includes a banquet for all of Juneau’s soccer community. The Shamrock Banquet happens on Saturday March 16 at the Red Dog Saloon. Anyone who loves the “Beautiful Game” is welcome to join us for a fun filled night of food, friendship and festivities. Contact the tournament organizers at [email protected] for more information about banquet tickets and timing.

Along with the annual 7-A-Side tournament in late May and the Competitive League tournaments in

mid August, the Shamrock Tournament is organized by the Capital City Soccer League (CCSL). Increasing adult soccer opportunities in Juneau and Southeast Alaska is what the CCSL is all about. Currently we have men’s and women’s competitive leagues, a women’s classic league, a masters league, and open field

nights happening throughout the year. For more information , please check out our website at: www.juneausoccer.com

It is said that home improvement projects can tax a marriage—no doubt true, but Sandy and I have

been through several expansions and renovations, and we have it down: I take responsibility for the floor, Sandy takes on everything else. As anyone who has been through this knows, there can be thousands of decisions to be made, all best decided in collaboration.

Our remedy for the stress of home improvements is to take time outs.

Sandy tends to prefer gardening, while I will take to the boat and get a line wet. We share interests in photography, whale watching, and we enjoy taking walks and the occasional hike together.

All of these types of activities, as well as a wide variety of recreational equipment, will be presented at the Southeast Alaska Sports and Recreation Show at Centennial Hall on March 22, 23, 24, 2013, from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $5 for the weekend, children under 12 are free.

[email protected], or call 586-4072.

Mountain Meadow Estate isn’t just custom homes, it’s a way of living,

a new community and neighborhood where everyone loves where they are.

They aren’t built like they use to be... We all acknowledge that this is a down play on the quality of how many things are built in today’s world. In the case

of Modular and Manufactured Homes built today, we are glad to say “they aren’t built like they used to be”. Because they really are not, they are built better than they used to be and they do last better than they used to. Over the years the building indus-try has taken huge strides in mak-ing homes more energy efficient and stand up better to the elements of Juneau’s tough weather. It is the

goal at Mountain Meadow Estate to take into account that we want homes that not only look good, but are designed and built around the way that we live and the weather that we live in here in Juneau.

Mountain Meadow has homes designed and built for sale, but also offers the opportunity to customize and build a home that truly fits your life style, your personal tastes, and espe-cially your budget. Just look at some of our testimonies on custom home building.

We have been living in our new home in Mountain Meadow Estates for close to one-year. Since the first day of occupancy we have been

excited and pleased with our new home – especially the dream kitchen that more than exceeded our expectations. After living down-town for twenty-six years we find living near Lemon Creek places us in a spot that makes it very easy and time effi-cient to either go to town or do business in the valley. Our

view from the porch allows us to take pictures of the many eagles that hang out in the area.

Jan and Ted Burke | Unit 8

Like many people, I was tired of paying other people’s mortgages every month. I worked with Julie to design a home that I love and will also great resell value as well. I can’t count the number of people who have asked me if our lot is for sale. It is great to have enough room for my dog, and a yard I can landscape. It is wonderful to know that the sale of our house wasn’t the end of the developer’s participation in making our community a great place to live. We are thrilled with our home, our neighbors and the developers who have made our neighborhood such a great place. Thank you!

Ellie Cary | Unit 1

I LOVE my house! My porch is quite possibly my favorite feature! I have so much fun showing it off to anyone who visits, pointing out how we made one wall larger to accom-modate a large screen TV. I picked out the floor plan specifi-cally for the ease of giving the dogs a bath and using the home

how we actually live. Overall it was a very easy experience! I also have some really cool pictures of my house being put together!

-Janette & Tom Gagnon | Unit 5

I have to say I’m very happy with the way the custom ordering worked. Going through the floor plan options allowed me to identify those items that were important for me and see how the layout could be adapted to fit the patterns of how I would use the rooms. Working with you on getting the changes I wanted was great, you helped identify those things I hadn’t thought of (like extra light in the kitchen). Even something so simple as being able to pick the colors for counters and flooring, instead of living with something that would do until I could make a change, has made the place much more “mine” right from the move-in.
