Retention of Officials

Do WE lose members?

Why do officials quit?

• Changing circumstances

• Conflict

• Harassment

Attitude

• Why don’t I get the “good” games?• When will I get to work more important or

“showcase” events?• How come the same people always do the Finals?• Why do I always have to do girls games or

elementary games?• I’m better than he/she is.

Why do officials leave OUR active ranks?

• they can’t keep up

• they’ve done it long enough and want to give the opportunity to younger members

Old Soldiers

• observing and evaluating

• mentoring - teaching local recruits

• volunteering at fund raising events for the local WC team

• Commissioners

What can we do to keep the younger ones?

• Indicate their worth– to the organization– to the sport

• Find out if they’re happy

• Ask if they have ideas for improving the organization

• Make the avocation more enjoyable and less like work

• accentuate the positive in meetings• hold social events both with and without

significant others• travel together• go to meals together
