Welcome to your first day of Science 9!

Our first lesson is...

So sit back, relax, and let’s learn how we can avoid serious injury (or setting ourselves on fire) when in the lab!

Here is an example of what NOT to do in a lab...

Quickly discuss the clip with your neighbours

Using previous knowledge (or common sense), how many things

did he do wrong?

• was not familiar with the materials or the equipment• did not follow instructions • wore no protective gear

Here’s another example of a lab gone wrong.

Safety Procedures1. Know the fire/room evacuation procedure2. Glass ware

- handle gently- dispose of any chipped or broken glass- use clean materials and wash it when finished

3. Heat sources- handle carefully- tie back long hair, long sleeves, bracelets, etc. - never leave a flame unattended

4. Chemical/broken glass disposal- place used chemicals and broken glass in their proper disposal bins

5. Sharp objects- handle gently and store safely

6. Electrical equipment- make sure your hands are dry- stop using any equipment that grows hot - pull the plug, not the cord, to prevent fraying

WHMIS Symbols

WHMIS: Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

Be familiar with the 8 WHMIS Symbols ...

And last, but not least, a few basic rules to remember...

Wear protective gear (gloves, smock/lab coat, goggles)

No food or drink in the lab

No running around or goofing off

Do NOT taste/touch/smell anything in the lab unless okay’ed by a teacher

- use the wafting technique
