Quickly discuss the clip with your neighbours

Using previous knowledge (or common sense), how many things

did he do wrong?

• was not familiar with the materials or the equipment• did not follow instructions • wore no protective gear

Safety Procedures1. Know the fire/room evacuation procedure2. Glass ware

- handle gently- dispose of any chipped or broken glass- use clean materials and wash it when finished

3. Heat sources- handle carefully- tie back long hair, long sleeves, bracelets, etc. - never leave a flame unattended

4. Chemical/broken glass disposal- place used chemicals and broken glass in their proper disposal bins

5. Sharp objects- handle gently and store safely

6. Electrical equipment- make sure your hands are dry- stop using any equipment that grows hot - pull the plug, not the cord, to prevent fraying

And last, but not least, a few basic rules to remember...

Wear protective gear (gloves, smock/lab coat, goggles)

No food or drink in the lab

No running around or goofing off

Do NOT taste/touch/smell anything in the lab unless okay’ed by a teacher

- use the wafting technique

Know where the safety equipment is (ie. fire extinguisher, shower, eye wash station)

Read the instructions BEFORE you start Report any accidents to the teacher Clean up (wash hands and materials)

when finished
