WHY WE NEED SMART MOTORWAYS/HIGHWAYS?

To ensure safety To reduce the accidents To reduce travels time To extend driving vision To helps others in making their drive comfort To monitor traffic levels To change speed limit to smooth traffic flow To alert drivers to hazards and traffic jams ahead To auto-detect traffic violations and penalize the commuters/violators And much more….

PAKISTAN MOTORWAYS MAP

A number of different ways, technologies are incorporatedinto roads, for; Improving the operations

of connected and autonomous vehicles Traffic lights management Monitoring road condition Traffic types analysis Traffic volume estimation Traffic regulation Violations (static and moving) monitoring Automated imposing police fine Traffic surveillance Incident detection &monitoring And much more….

SMART HIGHWAYS & SMART MOTORWAYS-

SMART TECHNOLOGIES

Top smart technologies for connecting and communicating with vehicles on the road in both autonomous driving and smart infrastructure; Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication

Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication

Vehicle-to-Network (V2N) communication

Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) communication

VEHICLE-TO-VEHICLE (V2V) COMMUNICATION

Dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) Two-way wireless channels-enable V2V-equipped

vehicles to communicate with each other at roughly 300meters

Broadcast updates ten times per second DSRC ensures basic safety messages (BSMs)-vehicle’s

speed, direction, braking status, and position todetermine whether an alert needs to be sent to the driver

Allows nearby vehicles to exchange data on their position and use these data to warn drivers of potential collisions that are not visible to sensors, such as a stopped vehicle blocked from view, or a moving vehicle at a blind intersection.

Unprecedented and transformative technology: Extendable to all vehicle types, road users, and

infrastructure

VEHICLE-TO-INFRASTRUCTURE (V2I) COMMUNICATION Wireless exchange of knowledge between vehicles and

road infrastructure Enabled by a system of hardware, software, and computer

code V2I communication is often wireless and bi-directional-

infrastructure elements like lane markings, road signs, and traffic lights can wirelessly provide information to the vehicle, law and enforcement agencies and vice versa

With so much knowledge being captured and shared, rich and timely information is used to enable a wide range of safety, mobility, and environmental benefits

Reducing collisions with other vehicles, Support safety applications including warning drivers about

traffic jams, accidents, slippery patches of road, sharp turns, intersection/joints safety, alerting drivers if they veer too close to the road’s edge

VEHICLE-TO-NETWORK (V2N) COMMUNICATION

V2N systems connect vehicles to the cellular infrastructure, and therefore the cloud

Drivers can take advantage of in-vehicle services like traffic updates and media streaming.

VEHICLE-TO-PEDESTRIAN (V2P) COMMUNICATION

Warns pedestrians of transit buses approaching/departinga bus stop as well as warns bus drivers of the presence ofpedestrians

Warns pedestrians getting off a bus of any vehicles nearthe bus stop that may be out of view, helping to avoidpotential collisions

Allows visually impaired pedestrians to communicate withtraffic signals via smart phones, as well as provides audiocues to help safely navigate the crosswalk

Drivers also receive alerts of a visually impairedpedestrian in the crosswalk.

Warns the driver if a pedestrian is crossing the road asthe vehicle is making a turn
