School’s heritage:

Athletics has been an integral part ofthe school sports discipline since the verybeginning. Besides the immense talentand coaching facilities, the vast openspaces of the school playground providethe right ambience for athletic surfaces -a rarity in the crowded city of Mumbai.Presently the Recreation Centre on thecampus promotes athletics. It engages stu-dents from the school, besides extendingits facilities to the interested budding ath-letes of other schools of the city. Trainingin athletics - that begin from the grassroots level - has the added advantage fora child who wishes to pursue other sportsassociated with the rigors of athletic dis-cipline viz. football, athletics, hockey, bas-ketball, tennis…

Laurels in athletics come by the dozen. Our school has earned the title of BombayCity District Athletics Association (BCDA)five times over the last 17 years, thanks tothe abounding talent and the astute coach-ing of Mr. John. In MSSA - Mumbai SchoolsSports Association, the school is rankedamong the top three in the city, and the Ju-nior athletes have annexed the champi-onship twice over the last years. Our stu-dents have consistently represented ourschool for Athletics at District, State andNational level that offer them a measure oftheir progress and help compete with thevery best in the state and country.

Our school sports program embracesdisciplines other than the traditional sport. The school has welcomed such variety ofdisciplines, though at times, it cannot fur-nish the necessary coaching or infra-structure facilities for the aspiring stu-dents. These disciplines include lawn ten-nis, chess, swimming, skating, martialarts, judo, karate, boxing and kickboxing. Some extremely gifted students have ex-celled in their game at the city, state andnational championships winning acclaimand accolades.

DONS OF FOOTBALLSchool’s heritage:

Hockey, a widely popular game of national in-terest has been a much favoured game in SalesianMumbai. The pioneers at Tardeo, introduced thisgame to the students as early as 1930, and it gainedacceptance and recognition in the school. The smallgrounds at Tardeo were big enough for a game ofhockey for the enthusiastic school children underthe tutelage of the Salesians themselves. The schoolteam began participating in major inter-schooltournaments and the winning habit of the boysmade the sports buffs sit up and take notice. Theyannexed major titles in hockey: Fr. Palacio'sLeague, Dr. Viegas Cup, Ahmed Sailor League andthe Jr. Aga Khan. Slowly but surely the schoolteams made giant strides to become a major forcein the hockey league of champion schools.

Big names in hockey have graced the schoolcoaches' roll of honour. These include Tata's Ap-panna Sir, Sukhwinder Singh and Internationaldefender B.S. Kuttappa. Today, the school teamsare in safe hands under the astute leadership andtraining of Javed Sayyed and Datta Mayekar. Hock-ey in the city of Mumbai is facing challengingtimes today as not many schools take up hockeyas other sports disciplines. There is a decline inthe participation of school teams in the MSSA andDSO organised tournaments. However the love forthe beautiful game hasn't faded yet on the Bosco cam-pus! Enthusiastic and passionate followers of thegame want to take the game forward, and thus bringback belief, charisma and fans to the sport that oncedefined India's sporting glory!
