         Self  help  skills  are  essential  for  fostering  child  independence.  These  self  help  skills  are  developmental  milestones.  Actual  ages  for  reaching  milestones  vary,  but  practicing  with  your  child  will  help  contribute  to  your  child’s  development.                4-­‐5  year  olds  should  be  able  to:  

§ Dress  and  undress  without  assistance  

§ Use  a  fork,  spoon,  and  butter  knife  

§ Care  for  their  own  bathroom  needs

Each  of  us  are  completely  dependent  at  birth,  so  eventually  we  learn  self  help  skills  to  develop  fully  into  an  adult,  where  we  have  responsibilities,  freedom,  and  pleasures.  If  children  can  find  joy  and  fun  in  self  helping  themselves,  then  they  will  more  likely  enjoy  their  life  as  an  adult.  It  can  give  them  self  worth  and  pride  in  achievement.    

When  your  child  begins  to  self  help,  they  may  not  be  good  at  it  or  may  be  messy.  Have  fun  and  have  patience  because  it  does  require  continuous  practice.  Start  with  small  steps  and  increase  the  difficulty  as  they  go!
