On a six-week tour ofthe U.S., Berlin’s TVBuddhas will take the
stage Monday at RubberGloves Rehearsal Studiosalongside Mad Happy fromNew York.
For the band’s influences,TV Buddhas offer up theRamones, Richard Hell andModern Lovers.
The style of their music isreminiscent of the ViolentFemmes, with simple, straightforward riffs that pack
the punch of a bag of ham-mers. The songs are foundedon basic rhythms and styles, but that isn’t to say that theyaren’t technically talented. There is definitely fire in thefingertips of guitarists UriTriest and Juval Haring, and
the thunder of drummerMickey Triest’s sticks showerslisteners in a way that takesthem back to the early days ofpunk rock.
The self-titled EP they’repushing on this tour wasrecorded in Berlin with noth-ing more than a single micro-phone and a field tapemachine. The EP speaks foritself. With this band, whatyou see is what you get.

OPENING FRIDAYAlpha and Omega ()
Moderately charming if generic ani-
mated feature about a pair of
Canadian wolves, Kate (voice of
Hayden Panettiere) and Humphrey
(Justin Long), each with different
personalities and roles in the pack,
who must find their way home to
settle a family conflict after being
accidentally sent away. Small chil-
dren might enjoy some of the 3D
effects and the quirky talking ani-
mals, but the film as a whole feels
like a collection of spare parts from
superior predecessors. Rated PG, 88
minutes. — Todd Jorgenson
Easy A () There are some big
laughs in this otherwise shallow
high school satire, loosely based on
The Scarlet Letter, about a teenager
(Emma Stone) who starts a rumor
about losing her virginity that she
hopes will make her popular but
instead gives her a different label,
especially for her strait-laced rival
(Amanda Bynes). The script has
plenty of witty banter (especially
among the supporting roles) and
makes enough clever tweaks to the
source material to overcome its pre-
dictability. Rated PG-13, 92 minutes.
— T.J.
The Extra Man () Excellent
performances carry this offbeat
comedy about a pompous and
eccentric New Yorker (Kevin Kline)
who makes a living out of escorting
rich elderly widows. He takes in a
new roommate (Paul Dano) who is
an aspiring writer and also happens
to like cross-dressing. The directors
of American Splendor draw some
inspired comic moments from such a
pairing, even if the film’s smugness
and forced whimsy start to wear thin
about halfway through. Rated R, 107
minutes. At the Angelika Dallas. —

Devil Five strangers stranded
together when their elevator gets
stuck face the revelation of their
secrets. Frightening events turn
annoyance into terror as the
strangers begin to realize that one of
their number is Lucifer himself. Story
by M. Night Shyamalan. Rated PG-13,
80 minutes.

Affleck grows up in ‘Town’By Boo AllenFilm Critic
It may take place in Boston, but The Town refers toCharlestown, the city’s noto-
rious, low-income neighbor-hood that regularly plays host tomurders, bank robberies, Irishgangs and, now more frequent-ly, film crews eager to capturethe area’s conflicting combina-tion of beauty, high energy andpalpable menace.
Boston native Ben Affleckknows the area well, as evi-denced by The Town, his sec-ond directing effort and onethat shows a pleasing maturityin his filmmaking. In GoneBaby Gone, Affleck followedthe formula laid out in thenovel by fellow BostonianDennis Lehane. Here, Affleck
works from Chuck Hogan’snovel Prince of Thieves, with ascript from a trio of writers, including Affleck.
But Affleck makes The Townhis own, showing a confidenceto experiment with sound, cam-era angles and more freneticaction sequences. He achievesthis technical level while alsoturning in one of his best per-formances as an actor — a nat-uralistic, rough-hewn portrayalof a townie, a native-born son
destined to follow the path laidout for him by his ancestry aswell as his environment.
At its core, The Town qualifiesas not much more than a heistfilm with a requisite romancethrown in. But it goes two betterby including three robberies, allratcheting up the tension sohigh you naturally question andthen recognize the fatal deter-minism of anyone who wouldundertake such operations, much less three in succession.
In the first heist, the gang offour nab bank manager ClaireKeesey (Rebecca Hall) but thenrelease her soon after. Thegang, headed by Doug (Affleck)and Jem (Jeremy Renner), dis-cover she lives nearby. Underthe pretense of finding outwhether she revealed anythingimportant to the FBI, Doug ini-tiates contact with her, which, before long, turns romantic.
From there, Doug and Claire
become more involved, whilehe reluctantly engages in hisextracurricular activities.
Naturally, the gang has theFBI hot on its trail, specificallyagent Adam Frawley (JonHamm). Various other sub-plots play out involving Doug’spast lives, such as with hischild’s mother (Blake Lively),and with his incarceratedfather (Chris Cooper), who, ashe puts it, has to die five moretimes before he is paroled.
Except for Claire, every char-acter in The Town arrives tightlywound. And by the end, evenshe has succumbed to the ener-vating neighborhood atmos-phere that seems to afflict thenatives. But that’s not surpris-ing, because Affleck has drawn aviolent and perpetually enter-taining, yet convincing, portrait.

ters with different actors. A paroled
child-molester (Ciaran Hinds) secret-
ly visits his family, now relocated to
Florida from New Jersey. His ex-wife
Trish (Allison Janney) and two sons
have troubles of their own, as well as
Trish’s two sisters (Ally Sheedy and
Shirley Henderson). Dumb, preten-
tious, artificial and filled with unlike-
able characters. Rated R, 98 minutes.

A Woman, a Gun and a NoodleShop () The great Chinese
director Zhang Yimou (Hero) based
this wry murder-action-thriller on
the Coen brothers’ first film, Blood
Simple. The setting reverts to rural
China, where a woman and her lover
both work for her cruel husband in
the titular noodle shop. When hubbie
learns of the infidelity, stuff hap-
pens. Much stuff. Unpredictable, fun,
funny and, as always in a Zhang
Yimou film, beautifully pho-
tographed. Rated R, 95 minutes. At
the Magnolia. — B.A.

NOW PLAYINGDespicable Me () Crisply ani-
mated CGI comedy about an insecure
supervillain (voiced by Steve Carell)
who wants to be renowned for his
evil deeds, yet discovers it’s easier to
walk the straight and narrow when
his heart is melted by three little girls
he adopts as part of a sinister plan to
steal the moon and upstage an evil
rival. The hip voice cast and quirky
periphery characters are a plus, and
while the film takes a while to find its
footing, there are plenty of solid
laughs to be had as long as you don’t
walk in expecting the next Pixar
extravaganza. Rated PG, 95 minutes.

Eat Pray Love (1/2) We can all
breathe easier now because Julia
Roberts has found eternal happiness,
true bliss and bodily harmony in Eat
Pray Love, the new mind-bogglingly
insipid film from director Ryan
Murphy, based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s
autobiography. In only her second
starring role of the last six years,
America’s Sweetheart plays author
Gilbert, as she travels to Italy, India
and Bali to find herself after a failed
marriage to one man (Billy Crudup)
and subsequent relationship with
another (James Franco). Mind-numb-
ingly simplistic, but with plenty of
pretty scenery. Rated PG-13, 135
minutes. — B.A.
The Expendables (1/2) Brawn
dominates brains in this formulaic
testosterone fest noteworthy for its
ensemble of erstwhile action-hero
types including Sylvester Stallone
(who also co-wrote and directed),
Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Jason
Statham, Mickey Rourke and others,
including a couple of surprise
cameos. The plot involves a group of
assassins on a secret yet dangerous
CIA mission in South America, but
story takes a clear backseat to
shootouts and explosions that grow
tiresome. Rated R, 103 minutes. —
T.J.
Get Low () Low-key charac-
ter piece elevated by a superb lead
performance from Robert Duvall,
playing a hermit who emerges from
a life in the Tennessee woods with a
wish to arrange a living funeral so he
can exorcise demons from his past.
The script (remarkably based on a
true story) is thin on its own, but
director Aaron Schneider smartly
lets his actors — including Bill
Murray, Sissy Spacek and Lucas
Black — take command. The result
is deliberately paced but ultimately
poignant. Rated PG-13, 102 minutes.
— T.J.
Going the Distance () This
surprisingly funny romantic-comedy
delivers some raunchy Hangover-
style humor in a familiar package. A
couple (Drew Barrymore and Justin
Long) meet in New York and fall for
each other. She must relocate to San
Francisco, but they do their best to
maintain a long-distance romance.
The unexceptional narrative gives
way to crackling, R-rated dialogue.
With Christina Applegate. Rated R,
102 minutes. — B.A.
Inception (1/2) The latest mind-
bending thriller from visionary film-
maker Christopher Nolan (The Dark
Knight) is about Dom (Leonardo
DiCaprio), a man who specializes in
the illegal practice of extraction, or
stealing secrets from a person’s mind
while the victim is dreaming. In what
he hopes will be his last job, Dom
must implant an idea in the dream of
the heir to a corporation (Cillian
Murphy) rather than extract it. At
times, Inception threatens to col-
lapse under the weight of its own
ambition, but in a summer of sequels
and retreads, the level of inspiration
alone is praiseworthy. Terrific sup-
porting cast includes Marion
Cotillard, Ellen Page, Joseph Gordon-
Levitt, Michael Caine and Tom
Berenger. Rated PG-13, 148 minutes.
— T.J.
The Last Exorcism () Shrewd,
suspenseful, but ultimately nonsensi-
cal horror flick that serves as a
refreshing change of pace, combining
elements of genre pioneers such as
Rosemary’s Baby and The Blair Witch
Project. Cotton (Patrick Fabian), a
charismatic Texas priest, has made a
career out of performing exorcisms
without believing in them. Before he
retires, he agrees to take on the case
of a Louisiana man convinced that
his teenage daughter (Ashley Bell) is
possessed without having any direct
evidence. Director Daniel Stamm
achieves a clever balance between
mocking formulas about demonic
possession and religious fundamen-
talism while still delivering some of
the cheap thrills that audiences will
expect. Rated PG-13, 87 minutes. —
T.J.
Machete () Stylish if uneven
action-comedy spoof from director
Robert Rodriguez gives a star turn to
Danny Trejo as an assassin who is
presumed dead by a Mexican drug
kingpin (Steven Seagal), only to
become an unlikely hero during a
fight for immigration rights during
the re-election campaign of a conser-
vative Texas senator (Robert De
Niro). But Rodriguez never engages in
much social commentary, preferring
to take comedic jabs and stage cre-
atively violent killings. The quirky
cast helps the filmmaker offer sever-
al big laughs. Rated R, 105 minutes.
— T.J.
Nanny McPhee Returns ()
Emma Thompson returns in the title
role, and supplies the screenplay, for
this sequel to the 2005 original
based on Christianna Brand’s charac-
ters. A mother (Maggie Gyllenhaal) in
World War II tends to her three chil-
dren and a visiting niece and nephew
while the father is at war. Enter
Nanny McPhee, who makes every-
thing right. Director Susanna White
aims directly at kids with broad
humor and plenty of cuddly anima-
tronic animals. Rated PG, 108 min-
utes. — B.A.
The Other Guys A detective more
interested in paperwork (Will Ferrell)
and a street-tough cop (Mark
Wahlberg) are partnered up. With
Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne
Johnson. Rated PG-13, 107 minutes.
— The Associated Press
Piranha 3D Spring break turns gory
when an underground tremor releas-
es hundreds of prehistoric, carnivo-
rous fish into Lake Victoria, a popular
waterside resort. With Elisabeth
Shue, Ving Rhames and Jerry
O’Connell. Rated R, 89 minutes.
Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D In a
world overrun with the walking dead,
Alice (Milla Jovovich) continues her
battle against Umbrella Corp., round-
ing up survivors along the way.
Joined by an old friend, Alice and her
group set out for a rumored safe
haven in Los Angeles. Instead of
sanctuary, they find the city overrun
with zombies, and a trap about to
spring. Rated R, 96 minutes.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World ()
This outrageously high-energy come-
dy, based on the series of graphic
novels by Bryan Lee O’Malley, has a
visual style that’s fearless if nothing
else. British director Edgar Wright
(Shaun of the Dead) swings for the
fences, even if he whiffs. Scott
(Michael Cera) is a quirky musician
trying to get over a bad breakup
when he meets a new girl (Mary
Elizabeth Winstead), whom he must
win over by defeating her seven ex-
boyfriends in a series of video game
showdowns. The story and actors
seem an afterthought to the frenetic
camerawork and stylistic trickery.
Rated PG-13, 112 minutes. — T.J.
Step Up 3D Street dancers and a
college freshman square off in a
competition against world-class hip-
hop dancers. Rated PG-13, 107 min-
utes. — AP
Takers () Stylish but generic
thriller starring hip-hop artist T.I. as
an ex-con who rejoins his old gang of
bank robbers for one last heist, but
has his motives questioned, and the
hardened cop (Matt Dillon) who has
been frustrated by the criminals’
high-tech elusiveness for years. The
film maintains a breathless pace,
with some impressive stunts and
chase sequences along the way. But
the screenplay is no Ocean’s Eleven
in its slick attempt to capture cama-
raderie among thieves. The cast
includes Idris Elba, Paul Walker and
Chris Brown. Rated PG-13, 107 min-
utes. — T.J.

When William “Big Bill”
Morganfield was in his mid-20s,
his life took an unexpected
turn. It was April 30, 1983. Morgan-
field was in Atlanta, teaching
English to middle-schoolers.
Muddy Waters, dubbed “the father
of blues,” passed away.
While the rest of the world mourned
the loss of the great musician, Big Bill
Morganfield
mourned his
dad.
“He had said on his dying bed, as he laidthere, he was a little bit disappointed inthat none of his kids had decided to doanything with blues and that music,”Morganfield said in a telephone interview.
“Not just his kids, but hesaw a whole genera-
tion of blacksmoving awayfrom theblues andreally thumb-ing their noseup to itbecause it wasconsidereddevil musicfor a while byour people, bya lot of ourpeople. Soanyway, as the
transfor-
mation went from all-black audiences toall-white audiences, he saw that movementand he saw that nobody was picking it up.And even his own kids, no one was tryingto pick it up and do anything with it.”
Although he “tinkled” with the guitarand tried to play along with songs on theradio as a child, he had no formal trainingand didn’t take it seriously until the yearfollowing his father’s death.
“I decided to dig into it and learn it,” saidthe self-taught guitarist who began by delv-ing into his father’s musical roots. “InitiallyI said, this stuff is easy. It’s not hard. Iwould get there, and I would try to recreatea record sound, and I realized, wow, I don’t
know what those guys are doing. Icould hear those three chords, but
they were doing a lot of sub-tle things in those
chords to come outwith that sound. Soit became a passionto really try tolearn it and getenough control ofthe music so that Icould put out atribute to myfather. Initiallythat’s what Iwanted to do.
“I wasn’tlooking for a
change,” Morganfield said. “I just wanted tohonor my father with one blues record.”
Eventually Morganfield reached that goalwith his first independent album, NineteenYears Old: A Tribute to Muddy Waters, recorded in Memphis in 1997. Rising Son,what he calls his debut album, earned hima W.C. Handy Award for Best New Artist in2000.
His 2001 release, Ramblin’ Mind, fea-tured two songs with Taj Mahal on vocals, and Blues in the Blood came out in 2003.
“I always tell people, you think myfather’s life is interesting, and it is,” saidMorganfield, who was raised by his grand-mother and earned two college degrees.“I’ve got a quite interesting one, too. Andit’s a tale.”
“I have a song called ‘Child of Mercy.’ Badluck and trouble follow me wherever I go.One of the lines goes, ‘I never knew mymother, my father was always on the road, too. My brothers and sisters, I knew I hadthem but I didn’t see them until I was[22].’… It’s the way it happened. It’s a life, and it’s the way it went down.”
He said his culture has embraced bluesas a way of life, and it shaped his life, too.
“Being born into a situation where yourdaddy is Muddy Waters kind of helps,”Morganfield said.
When his father died, Morganfield said, his love for his father helped develop hisfondness for blues. The two go hand inhand, he said.
“I had a chance to walk in his steps as anyproud son would want to do,” he said. “Likeanything, you learn it, and then you take it,and go with it and make it your own.”
Morganfield’s father told his son therewere two types of guitar players. For thefirst type, entertaining came naturally.“That was my dad; it came natural to him,”Morganfield said.
“And he’d say, you’ve got these other kindof guys, that they [were] like, one nail. Oneat a time. Bang, bang, bang. … And that’sme. I’m like one nail at a time. It’s a reallyslow process.”
He said he’s always working to improvehis technique, much like his father was.
“Little steps, little steps, little steps, and
before you know it, you’re at a very highlevel,” he said.
Last year, Morganfield released his fifthalbum, Born Lover, on his own label, BlackShuck Records, backed by Vizztone anddistributed by Red Eye. “That’s my ownthing. That’s my own money that went intothe production of that record, so that’s mybaby all the way,” he said.
“I try to be a good entertainer. I alwayssay that [it’s] the thing that differentiatesme from the other guys out there,” he said.“You get on stage, you give people a show.”
Morganfield said he’s looking “to workmy magic” at the Denton Blues Festival, and “to let people see not just the son ofMuddy Waters, but [to see] Big BillMorganfield.”

Over the last 20 years,Freebirds World Bur-rito’s Texas-focused
chain has developed somethingof a cult following.
Freebirds fanatics are thosewilling to drive for miles to gettheir fill of the restaurant’s bur-ritos, tacos, nachos and the like. They hotly debate the merits ofFreebirds over its nationalcompetitor, Chipotle, anddescribe in detail their favoritecombinations from a choice of3 trillion possibilities. They fillup “fanatic cards” with stamps, redeemable toward rewardsbased on accumulated pur-chases.
Now, fortunately, local fanat-ics won’t have to fill up their gastanks to get to the closestFreebirds. As of today, Dentonhas one of its own.
Earlier this week, FreebirdsDenton opened its doors in twodays of mock trial runs, whichdoubled as benefits for its twolocal causes: the University ofNorth Texas College of Musicand the Denton State Sup-
ported Living Center. For a $5donation, customers wereinvited to chow down on a cus-tom-made meal and to experi-ence the Freebirds culture. From its start as the joint ven-ture between two college room-mates to its more recent corpo-rate expansion, Freebirds’ phil-anthropic, “change the world,”be-yourself attitude appealslargely to the college crowd andthe ever-optimistic — a perfectfit for Denton.
Until Monday, I was amongthe uninitiated. Peekingthrough the glass windows, Icould see the Statue of “Libby”suspended from the ceiling, busting through the BerlinWall on a Voodoo customchopper. (Later I learned thisrepresentation of freedom isfound in every Freebirdsrestaurant.) As soon as Iwalked through the door, I washit with a barrage of rock ’n’ rolland greetings from more-than-helpful employees.
A young, nose-ringed gentle-man loudly suggested over themusic that I try the famousburrito. He led me to the cafe-
teria-style fresh food line whereI was introduced to Miyaka, afriendly employee with amovie-star smile who maderecommendations from thefreebies, extras and sauces aswe went along.
Our completed collaborationwas a foil-wrapped cylindricalcreation stuffed inside aspinach tortilla, made withgrilled chicken, black beans, rice, guacamole, lots of cilantro, red onion, roasted corn, salsaand who knows what else Iagreed to. Common senseaside, I also agreed to chips andqueso. Fortunately, I was starv-ing.
As I properly unpeeled thefoil, I began a lengthy journeytoward the other end of theburrito. I didn’t quite make itthrough the seismic Tex-Mexportion. (I did, however, inspite of my big eyes and stuffedstomach, find some room forthe creamy white cheese
queso.) My husband went with the
more manageable carnitatacos, slow roasted since morn-ing and slightly spicy. He gavethe Sweet Leaf Tea the thumbsup, and I washed down mymeal with a soda (no Coke,Pepsi). Maybe next time we’dgo for a beer or try a frozenmargarita. At meal’s end, weopted to throw out our used foilrather than add to the restau-rant’s decor, as suggested, withartistic expressions. The newrestaurant was already dottedwith odd-shaped animals andshiny aluminum-foil sculp-tures.
The eager employees allwanted to know how we likedour first visit. We liked it. Was it,as one Facebook fanaticdescribed, “the most bodacious-ly epic masticating flavorfuladventure of the taste buds”?
It might be a bit over the top,but that phrase would describeFreebirds perfectly.
