What is Witricity:

• Witricity is nothing but wireless

electricity.

• Transmission of electrical energy from one

object to another without the use of wires

is called as Witricity.

• Because of Witricity some of the devices

won't require batteries to operate.

Witricity is based on:

Witricity is based on strong coupling between electromagnetic resonant objects to transfer energy wirelessly between them.

In 1899, Sir Nikola Tesla Proposed a method of Wireless Power Transmission.

As it is in Radiative mode, most of the Power was wasted and has less efficiency.

The efficient midrange power transfer concept is Witricity. In this model source and load are in Magnetic resonance so there is no power loss.

History of Wireless Power:

In the first successful trial of its kind, the team was able to illuminate a 60-watt light bulb 7ft away .

The team from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who call their invention ‘Witricity‘.

Rebirth in 2007

The story started late one night the few years ago. It was probably sixth time of that month.Mr. Marin was awakened by his mobile phone beeping low battery warning signal. At that time he thought about the transmission of electricity without wires. This is a most important cause for WiTricity.

The experiment consists of two Self-resonant coils. One coil (source coil) is coupled inductively to an oscillating circuit; the other (device coil) is coupled inductively to a resistive load.

Self-resonant coils rely on the interplay between distributed inductance and distributed capacitance to achieve resonance.

Experiment of MIT researchers:

Basic Principle:

The basic principle involved in Witricity concept is, Two objects having same resonating frequency and in Magnetic resonance at Strongly coupled regime tend to exchange energy , while dissipating relatively little energy to the extraneous off-resonant objects.

Why not wires?

As per studies, most electrical energy transfer is through wires.

Most of the energy loss is during transmission

• On an average, more than 30%• In India, it exceeds 40%.

How wireless energy could workPower from mains to

antenna, which is made of copper.

Antenna resonates at a frequency of about 10MHz,producing electromagnetic waves

‘Tails' of energy from antenna, which must also be resonating at 10MHz. Energy used to re-charge device

Energy not transferred to laptop re-absorbed by source antenna.

Now a days there is a Rapid development of autonomous electronics like Laptops, Cell-phones, House-hold robots and all those devices typically rely on chemical energy storage(Battery) As they are becoming daily needs to present generation, Wire less energy transfer would be useful for many applications as above and they need midrange energy

Need of Witricity:

Wireless electricity in Daily life

How safe is witricity ?

Human beings or other objects placed between the transmitter and receiver do not hinder the transmission of power.

Magnetic fields tend to interact very weakly with the biological tissues of the body, and so are not prone to cause any damage to any living beings.

Applications:

Direct Wireless Power Device needs no wires More mobility to devices

AutomaticWireless Charging Device with rechargeable batteries charges itself directly without wires

Consumer

Electronics

Industrial

Transportation

Miscellaneous

Some more Applications……

Advantages:

Safe, fairly efficient, good range Get electricity anywhere without tumbling wires.

Nature of power delivery is Omni- directional, i.e ., in every direction.

Does not interfere with radio waves.

Non radiative energy transfer is safe for animals and people.

Less costly.

Disadvantages:

Wireless power transmission can be possible only in few meters.

Efficiency is only 40%. As witricity is in development stage, a lot of work is done for improving the efficiency and distance between transmitter and receiver.

The resonance condition should be satisfied and if any error exists, there is no possibility of power transfer.

CONCLUSION:

Wireless power transfer is quickly becoming a viable reality. “Witricity” products expected in next few years.“Witricity” offers an extremely efficient alternative to previous attempts at providing wireless power.Future improvements in wireless power technology offer world changing implications.

Future Enhancement:

MIT's Witricity is only 40 to 45% efficient and they have to be twice as efficient to compete with the traditional chemical batteries.

Aim is to get a robotic vacuum or a laptop working, charging devices placed anywhere in the room

The researchers have said that in another five years time, they will come up with a Witricity system for commercial use.

THANK YOU
