  • Dear Parents,

    WELCOME BACK

Welcome to the 2015 school year. In particular, I

would like to extend a warm St Albans East wel-

come to our new families who have joined us for

the first time this year. We have 66 prep students

and a number of new students across the school

bringing our current enrolment to 393.

    2015 STAFF

Welcome to the following and returning staff

members for the 2015 school year:

Ms Joanne Agius – Grade 3/4 Teacher-

    Room 20

Mrs Verity Dester – Grade 1/2 Teacher-

    Room 14

I have attached a staff list to the newsletter for

    your information.

    MEET THE TEACHER

Meet the Teacher sessions have been planned for

Tuesday 24th and Wednesday 25th February. Fur-

ther details will be sent home about this shortly.

    CHANGE OF DETAILS

We have attached our Change of Details form in

this newsletter. Please use this to notify the office

immediately if you have changed any personal

details so that we can update our system.

    SCHOOL DAY

Our school day officially begins at 9am each day

and concludes at 3:15. Below is an outline of our

daily structure. Please be aware that the morning

music starts at 8:50am. Children are encouraged

to go straight to their rooms when the morning

music starts to prepare for their school day.

Teachers are on duty from this time in their class-

    room.

Children must not be in the school grounds be-

fore 8:45am on any school day unless super-

    vised by their own parent.

    2:15 – 3:15 Session 5

We encourage all children to bring small healthy

snacks to eat at their table during the day. This

can include fruit (must be cut into pieces), dried

fruit, cheese, small dry crackers. Children are

not allowed to eat unhealthy snacks such as

chips, sweet biscuits, lollies and chocolates dur-

ing this time. No nut products are to be brought

to school either. The children will be talking

about brain food so they will be able to make

    appropriate suggestions.

We also encourage all children to bring a water

bottle to school to leave on their tables. Chil-

dren must only drink water only from these bot-

tles throughout the day (no cordial or soft

drink is allowed). We have internal water

fountains that can be used to refill water bottles.

NEWSLETTER The Newsletter is produced fortnightly and dis-

tributed to the youngest member of each family

on a Friday. We hope you find the newsletter

informative, and it will contain information re-

garding school events, children’s work and im-

    portant dates.

Additional copies are available in the Reception

    area.

    SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS

Information was sent out regarding the School

Council and the Election Process last week.

Nominations close Monday 9th February. We

have three parent vacancies. Please give this

some consideration and feel free to contact me

tional resources have been allocated to our school’s

    2015 school budget.

The school has the discretion to use the additional

funding in ways that allow it to best meet the edu-

cational needs of its students and support the learn-

ing and teaching programs of the school.

School Council has determined that for the 2015

school year the additional resources will be used to

cover the costs of the following for students.

    1. Book Pack

    2. Two Excursions

    3. Footsteps & Life Education

There will be no charge in 2015 for the items

    listed above.

Parents will be responsible for covering all other

costs that may include but are not limited to items

such as swimming, camps, incursions and excur-

sion (over and above those listed), replacement sta-

    tionary items, uniform, and hats.

At this stage these arrangements are only in place

for 2015 and will be reviewed by school council

annually as their continuation will be based on gov-

    ernment funding.

    PARENT BEHAVIOUR

I feel it is important to outline the school’s expecta-

tions in relation to parent behaviour at the outset.

Schools are a place for learning. On some occa-

sions parents have thought it best to sort out their

own issues with other parents or students without

school intervention. It always saddens me when

parents take matters into their own hands and cause

issues with one another. I have a

NO TOLERANCE approach to what I call the

‘ugly parent syndrome’. If a parent chooses to

cause a problem in the school yard at anytime I will

issue a formal Trespass Order that will prevent

them from entering the school grounds. Under no

circumstances will the school accept aggressive and

abusive behaviour from its community members. I

request that anyone that has a problem that relates

to another member of the school community (be it a

teacher, student or another parent) inform myself or

Ricky Potter (Assistant Principal) immediately so

that we can resolve it. I have attached a copy of the

Parents Concerns and Complaints Procedure for

    your information.

    UNIFORM

It was great to see all the students return to school look-

ing wonderful in their school uniform. Just a reminder

that wearing the school uniform is compulsory as is

wearing a hat in first and fourth term.

NO HAT NO PLAY IN TERM 1 & 4. Hats are avail-

    able from the school office.

All our new preps will be provided with a prep polo

shirt as a gift from the school council. This item is part

of our school uniform and can be worn instead of the

sky blue top. These are due to arrive soon. PLEASE

LABEL ALL ITEMS WITH YOUR CHILD’S

    NAME.

    CLOSURE OF SCHOOL GATES

As is past practise the school gates will be locked each

day at 9:15am and reopened at 3:00pm. The only entry

into the school between 9am and 3:15pm will be

through the front entrance in Station Ave.

    ASSEMBLY

A whole school Assembly will take place each Friday

after lunch at 2:20pm in the Hall. I would like to en-

courage our parents and friends to join us.

    SCHOOL CROSSING

The start of a school year is often a good time to revisit

with your children the topic of safe travel to and from

school. We have supervised school crossings and it is

an expectation that all students and their families use

these. Can I encourage families to take the opportunity

whilst the weather is nice to walk their children to

school to identify the safest route to school and to revisit

    crossing roads safely?

    STUDENT ABSENCES

Student absences are always a concern for a school. It is

important that your child attends school every day to en-

sure continued learning success, unless they are sick or

have a legitimate reason for needing a day away from

school. If your child has missed school please notify the

school either in writing or via the phone with an expla-

    nation for the absence.

I look forward to a positive and productive school year

    for students, families and teachers.

arrived in Melbourne and are in need of some old bicy-

  • STUDENT WELLBEING AT ST. ALBANS EAST PRIMARY SCHOOL

At St. Albans East Primary School we have a Student Wellbeing Worker (SWW) who is available every Tuesday and Wednesday.

The role of the SWW is to provide pastoral care to all associated with the school learning community.

The National School Chaplaincy Programme (NSCP) is a Commonwealth funded programme that provides funding for the employment of chaplains and students wellbeing workers in Victorian

    schools.

Agnes Capanda is the Student Wellbeing Worker at SAEPS and is employed to provide social and emotional support to students and the wider school community. This is done primarily through building a relationship of trust and respect, and being a positive role model who is available to listen. Support could be individual or group-based (focusing on issues such as anger management, feelings, social skills, self-esteem, grief and loss, friendships etc.) and may also involve referral to other (appropriate) support services within the community. Please do not hesitate in approaching the Student wellbeing worker if you have any questions or

require assistance for yourself or your child.

You can either phone the school on (03) 9366 2071 or

ask at the office to speak with Agnes.
