SPMLInfrahascompletedanimportantIrrigationProjectinGujaratcalledSaurashtraNarmadaAvtranIrrigation(SAUNIYojana)launchedbyShriNarendraModijiinSeptember2012duringhistenureastheChiefMinisterofGujarat.Theprojectenvisagetodivertonemillionacrefeet(1MAF)waterofNarmadaDamtoSaurashtratodistributeitto115Reservoirsthroughatotalof1115Kmsfourlinkpipelinestoirrigate1.8millionhectareofland,mainlyinSaurashtra,KutchandnorthGujarat,bene�itingmillionsoffarmers.Itwillalsosupplyirrigationwaterto2.46lakhhectaresindrought-proneBarmerandJaloredistrictsinRajasthanandsomepartsofMaharashtraapartfromgeneratinghydropower.

Thisprojecthassolvedthewaterscarcityof132townsand11,456villagesintheSaurashtra,Kutch,NorthGujarat,PanchmahalandAhmedabadregionsfordrinkingandirrigation.About1,650MLDofwaterissuppliedto39millionpeopleacrosstheseregionsandwiththegoodcrop;itisboostingtheeconomyofthestate.

Projectbackground:

ThestateofGujaratwasfacingseverewaterscarcityandseveralregionsremainaridandreceivescarcerainfall,thusfacingfrequentdroughts.PeopleofSaurashtraandKutchregionswerefacingacuteshortageofwaterfordrinkingandirrigationandwereforcedtomigratetootherregions.Almost70percentofdams,reservoirsandotherwaterbodiesofthisregionhadbecomedryandlargeareaoftheKutch-Suarashtraregionwasdependent onwater supply through tankers. In a bid tomitigate this problem, theGujaratgovernmentundertookthedevelopmentofastatewatersupplygrid,SwarnimGujaratSaurashtra–KutchWaterGridProject.ItwasdevelopedbyGujaratWaterInfrastructureLimited(GWIL)toaugmentwatersupplytotheseareasinthestate.

ProjectChallenges:

AllEPCprojectsarehighlyscheduledrivenwherephasesareoverlappedtocompletetheprojectasearlyaspossible. Sometime these challenges lead to cost overrun and schedule delay. SPML has faced somechallengeswhileexecutingtheprojects:

· ThehugesizeofPipelayingwasabigchallengeinrockyterrains;SPMLusedrockbreakersandsophisticatedmachinesfordiggingthetrench

· Transportationofheavypipes(each12mtrspipeweighted11.5metrictonnes)waschallenging;SPMLusedspeciallymade18wheellowbedtrailersforpipetransportation

· Plannedandcreatedmechanismtoenhance theaccess tosite forsafe laying indiversesoilandclimaticconditions

· Jointingbyweldingofeachlargediameterpipeswereaherculeantaskandafterjointingeachpipewereagaincoatedwith3layerpolyethylene

· Enormous task to place heavy pumpingmachineries, rotator of all pumpswere imported fromGermany

· SPMLdevelopedexpertiseinworkingatveryhot,inhospitableconditionstocompletetheproject
