Miguel Jose Serra was born on the island of Majorca on November 24 1713 and took the name of Junipero when in 1730 he en-tered the Franciscan Order Ordained in 1737 he taught philosophy and theology at the University of Padua until 1749
At the age of 37 he landed in Mexico City on January 1 1750 and spent the rest of his life working for the conversion of the peo-ples of the New World
In 1768 Father Serra took over the missions of the Jesuits (who had been wrongly expelled by the government) in the Mexican province of Lower California and Upper California (modern California) An indefatigable worker Serra was in large part respon-sible for the foundation and spread of the Church on the West Coast of the United States when it was still mission territory
He founded 21 missions and converted thousands of Indians The converts were taught sound methods of agriculture cattle rais-ing and arts and crafts
Junipero was a dedicated religious and missionary He was imbued with a penitential spirit and practiced austerity in sleep eat-ing and other activities On August 28 1784 worn out by his apostolic labors Father Serra was called to his eternal rest He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25 1988 His statue representing the State of California is in National Statuary Hall
PRAYER Almighty eternal God You dedicated the joy of this day to the glorification of Blessed Junipero Mercifully grant that we may strive to retain and complete by our works that Faith which he continually proclaimed with insatiable zeal Amen

ST JUNIPERO SERRA Priest July 1
My dear parishioners
Today we commemorate the 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time as we celebrate the Lordrsquos Day Each Sunday the first day of the
week we come together to celebrate our faith in the Resurrection of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ For it was on
this day that He was raised from death after suffering greatly and dying on the wood of the Cross Our observance of the
Lordrsquos Day is primarily commemorated by our participation in the celebration of the Eucharist In doing so we are following
the tradition of the Apostles and first disciples of Jesus who gathered to remember the saving events which brings life to be-
lievers In addition to Holy Mass we also celebrate this day by making it different from all other days of the week We do so
by limiting our work and allowing quiet time for reflection and recreation to take place This is our family day when we in-
vigorate the love we share with one another so as to draw strength and support to meet the challenges of life The Lordrsquos Day
strengthens families so that the powers of darkness will be defeated and not capable of entering into the intimacy of the
home We see that when the observance of the Lordrsquos Day is not within the family experience there are serious problems
which bring about destruction
As your pastor I encourage you mom and dad to be diligent in keeping SUNDAY SPECIAL during these summer months
Holy Mass is an obligation for all of us even when the sun is shining and the shore is calling Time away is important and
necessary but when you are away be sure to find a Catholic Church in your travels where you can participate in the Holy
Sacrifice of the Mass Enjoy your vacation time and give thanks to God that you have the ability to be with family and
friends for rest and recreation
Another thing that I would like to remind you of is the importance of your Sunday offerings each week Many times it is said
that ldquoall the priest talks about is moneyrdquo I guess the priests are on good company because according to Scripture scholars
Jesus speaks more about MONEY than He does about prayer in Gospel The pastor is the one to whom the bills come and
from whom vendors expect payment I can only pay our church bills because of your generous offerings which come as a
result of your faith in the Lord Jesus who rose from the dead and who promised eternal life to all whom trust in Him There-
fore my good people PLEASE REMEMBER TO GIVE YOUR WEEKLY OFFERING TO THE LORD EVEN WHEN
YOU ARE AWAY In giving a generous and weekly offering you are singing with the Psalmist lsquorsquoI WILL PRAISE YOU
LORD FOR YOU HAVE RESCUED MErdquo
God bless you
Father Zig

God bless you

necessary but when you are away be sure to find a Catholic Church in your travels where you can participate in the Holy
